You saw this dress last week... New Dress A Day - vintage dress - thrift store

...when I reached out your way to help me pick out what color to dye the top of it!

Those appliqué/pockets were the best!!

And by best, I mean had to go!! The votes were tallied and the winning color was coral!!

See how the whole piece looks now!

After coordinating votes from the comment section here, on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and individual emails, the color choice that won was coral! To get the right shade, I took four dyes (Tangerine, Sunshine Orange, Golden Yellow, and Scarlet) and mixed them together. I started with 1/4 cup-ish of Tangerine and then 1/8 cup-ish of Scarlet, and then fine tuned the shade with drips of the other two shades.

I made my dye bath and then added in the top portion of the dress!

Post dye, I ran water through the piece until the color ran clear and then tossed it into the dryer!

I hit those patchy pockets next - I took a seam ripper and started to remove stitches.

The pockets came out...

...and the pins went in to prep for restitching.

I stitched the pockets...

...and then began work on the skirt portion! I took the dress a bit shorter...

...pinned the raw edges down...

...and then stitched a brand new hem!

What a fun summery color this turned out!!

I continued with the 70s vibe by adding my vintage Candies and my dad's bamboo belt that he actually wore back then. I totally need a picture of him wearing this!

Thanks to everyone who submitted their picks. I like having you choose which route to take! I'm a total Libra and can't make a decision to save my life, so having other people choose for me is always appreciated :) Can y'all help out with dinner suggestions while we're at it??

Full post to come...

Michelle and Mikhayla's NDAD Creation

I love how Michelle and her gorgeous little kiddo Mikhayla took an outgrown garment and turned it into something so cool and practical! This is something that you can craft for yourself, for your kids, for your office and I can't wait to get started on one myself! Check out what the terrific team of M&M created...

Hi! I have a crafty project made out of an outgrown garment to show you! Mikhayla had a cute little sweatshirt that had our favorite thing in the world on the front of it - SPARKLES! We couldn't just throw it away!

See how Michelle and Mikhayla crafted this sparkly piece into something fabulous!

We gathered up all our supplies...a piece of packing styrofoam in a nice square (about an inch thick), some craft glue, LOTS of pins, various ribbons, and our all important hot pink zebra print Duck Brand duck tape!

We cut the design out from the front of the shirt, and used some of the craft glue and pins to tack it into place on the board. We used ribbons to make a little grid over top of the design.

To finish it off, we used our trusty duct tape for a functional and pretty border.

Now she has a cute little memo board for her locker or room! The cost was literally nothing.

I had all the supplies from around the house, and the little shirt was from Mikhayla's growing stack of outgrown clothes.

You get another big thumbs up from me too! I just love this project. So perfect for holding pictures, notes, reminders... You guys were able to create something super practical while still holding onto a garment that you loved so much. This is such a fab example of how you can really upcycle anything. Kudos gals - such a fun crafternoon you both must have had making this!! xo
