Jennifer's NDAD Creation

Jennifer submitted today's awesome project after seeing my remake of this lace dress... New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Wedding Dress - 80s

...that I featured last May. (Click HERE for the full post!) I love hearing from you guys via email and in the comments section when you have similar dresses to the ones that I remake! So, seeing Jennifer's project made me super happy. Check it out...

This recreation was done five years ago but when I saw your do-over of the peach lace dress a little while back, I just had to respond. This is my wedding dress from my first marriage in 1986. Covered in the same lace as your dress. Imagine my shock!

Fast forward to 2008. My daughter Caitlin was graduating high school and was looking for a different kind of vintage prom dress. We looked for months and even consulted a dress designer, but we were stuck until one day when we saw my old dress hanging in the closet.

Just for kicks she tried it on. Caitlin is shorter than me so the dress was too long, but other than that it fit to a T! But oh...that lace and those shoulder pads?!

We got out the seam ripper, and very carefully removed the lace from the top, including the sleeves. We shortened the straps, rented three crinolines for more poof in the skirt and VOILA...

...a beautiful, re-purposed prom dress that was totally my sassy girl's style!

One word - obsessed!! I just love this project so much. You were able to take something treasured from your life and turn it into something to be treasured again in your daughter's life. What an awesome way to repurpose your dress!! And, I love that this was a team effort! I want to hang with you girls next time. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

PS, here's a gorgeous shot that Jennifer included of her before her wedding, getting ready! Love this candid so much!! I think I wore that same floral headpiece for my communion!!

Remake: Ivory Satin Jacket

You saw a few teaser shots of this satin blazer yesterday... New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Satin Blazer

Ivory with light blue and pink embroidered flowers as well as one solo pocket, like you do...

I had visions of cutting the sleeves short or tweaking the collar...

...but then I thought about making a color change.  Yep, that's exactly what this piece needs.  Color change, here I come!

Inspired by the navy blue dye I used on the fringed shirt last week to turn it into a fabulous capelet (refresher, HERE)...

...I opted to go the same hue route!!  I wasn't quite sure what color the piece would ultimately turn because of all the embroidery, so it was going to be a bit of a surprise.  I tossed the blazer in the washing machine and let 'er rip!  And by let 'er rip, I mean turned on the hot water cycle and waited for 37 minutes for the wash to complete.

It's funny because the things that were annoying to me in the before shot (danging ties, one pocket, slightly big), didn't even resonate post-dye.  I did however remove the belt loops with a seam ripper, but that's about it.

Hello most gorgeous heather grey-ish jacket that when paired with navys, mauves, and white, looks purple!

I ended up not even trimming the loose tie because I used it to turn the blazer into a wrap-style piece for the look all the way on the left!  (I tied it to another string on the inside of the jacket). I wasn't done yet!  I wore the piece open for the middle look, and then just partially open for the final look on the right.  It was fun to see how different the jacket looked from one style to the next.

I liked the partially open look the most.  I still got to wear my vintage floral belt and it just felt less enveloping, ya dig?

I also rolled the ends of the arms to give it more of a casz feel.  Paired with my pink Wayfarers and my Seychelles heels, I popped that collar.

I also started jumping like crazy which could perhaps be the reason why my knee feels a little funky today.  Note to self - stick to one jump when you're in heels.  This isn't your hip hop class.

I'm so on board with this piece!

Happy Friday, friends!
