Remake: Salmon Carnation Dress

The color of this dress and the amazing floral print sold me right off the bat!  It's salmon!!  I love to eat salmon, I love the book Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and I love the Crayola crayon shade, salmon.  We're just in salmon heaven over here! New Dress A Day - DIY - Goodwill

Sure there was some weird layering...

...and a bit too much elastic for me...

...but the potential of this piece was shining through.  I just loved how drapey the material gathered at the waist looked.  Time to get crackin!

I began by cutting off the top of the dress, starting right at the armpit!!  No more sleeves.

Post-trim, I put the dress on and measured how much I needed to take in.  I pinned the new measurements...

...and stitched it in place.

I had to tweak the top of the dress next.  I folded under the raw edging and pinned this area in place to prep for sewing.

It's new seam time!!  I ran the top of the dress under my machine and was ready to go.

Paired with a woven/elastic-y belt and some wedges, my dress was ready for a charitable afternoon at the vineyards.

An event with the amazing organization Chrysalis (they provide resources and support to low-income and homeless individuals who are in need of employment, helping them down a path to self-sufficiency) was held at Cielo Farms in Malibu and before I even walked inside, my klutzy self managed to do some damage.  Honestly, I was trying to fix the wobbly sign...

It was truly a magnificent Southern California day, as it still felt like summer outside.

We were able to taste a little bit of everything, but my favorite was their Woodstock Honey Pie varietal - a mix of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat - which was the perfect mix of smooth, sweet, and not too dry.  Totally perfect for a warm afternoon.

I always get comments about strapless dresses and how they stay up - really, all I had to do for this was take in the dress so it was tight enough in the bust, add a padded strapless bra underneath, toss some Topstick in my purse for good measure, and it fit to a tee.  (PS, Topstick is one of my FAVORITE tools...super-strength, double stick tape, that really works for everything!)  I was on the fence about adding straps, just for additional color and texture, however I decided to keep the collarbone area open.  (Add whatever kinds of straps, drawstrings, elastic, you'd like to make this style of dress work for you!)

After a few hours in the 'bu, our group headed back down PCH for a fish taco stop.  We had a bit of a wait, and because we were right on the water and had some time to kill before our table was ready, we got some fruity beverages.

When this is your view...

...you just have to go with the fruity beverages, amirite?!

I hope everyone had a most wonderful weekend!  Let's get those Monday smiles on our faces and take on this week like champions! (I'm in personal pep talk mode at the moment, so some of my "yay, team" energy is flowing right into this post.  I also saw Gravity this weekend and feel like anything is possible when you can actually feel and physically touch the ground :)) xo Marisa

Teresa's NDAD Creation

It's football season (YAY!!!) and this piece that Teresa submitted is something super amazing that you can create with any of your old college tees.  I'm always trying to come up with ways to repurpose all the tees that I've accumulated over the years as well as ways to update ones that have become a little bland feeling.  I love this remake and need to add this to my list!!  Check it out...

I saw this idea on Pinterest of making a college t-shirt into a dress. I am new to garment making, but have been sewing on and off since my grandmother taught me when I was seven - this was my first attempt all by myself.  I decided to make a maxi dress for my graduation earlier this month from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY.  I'm really excited with how it came out, and working with jersey wasn't half as bad as the internet made it seem, after watching a few tutorials on YouTube!

I got the top as a gift for doing an online survey for my school.

Time to see how Teresa makes this maxi-ready!!

The fabric I got from good ol' JoAnn Fabrics for $15.

I cut the shirt and made it into a tube with elastic in the top hem.  Fitting the fabric was super easy - all you do is wrap the fabric around you however tight or loose you would like it to fit, mark it, then lay it flat and create and seam line (I used board chalk) and be sure to give yourself seam allowance.  Sew the seam and you're a third of the way done.

Sew the top and bottom parts together and last but not least, hem the bottom for a more finished and professional look.  I made a blind hem stitch, but a straight stitch would also do the trick.

All of the other sewing I used my machine's stretch straight stitch.

All in all it was very easy and anyone could do this!

You go girl!!  All i can think of is, "We've got spirit, yes we do! We've go spirit, how about you?"  Way to take those school shirts and make them into something amazing!  I absolutely love this and hope that you're getting tons of wear out of it.  Time to take my USC shirts and make them into a maxi dress too!!  It's perfect for rooting on football or basketball in school colors.  Rock on, Teresa!

Tide Pods Visa Gift Card Giveaway!!

The September issue of Vogue has arrived and it’s just getting me even more excited for Spring ‘14 Fashion Week that’s right around the corner. This is always one of the most fun times of the year because it means seeing new trends and getting more designer inspiration for upcoming copycat posts! Woo! I begin a pinning frenzy on Pinterest of things that I can’t wait to recreate after they come down the runway.

New Dress A Day - Vintage Haul - Thrift Store Shopping - Fashion Week

Before any cutting or sewing begins, the first thing I do with my entire vintage finds is wash them!! My hands get a coat of Purell and my garments don’t leave the bags they come in, before a rinse and tumble.

I’m extremely detailed when it comes to getting out spots and keeping my pieces in good shape, so I’m working with Tide Pods today to give my flea market finds a renewed life. I’m looking forward to my clothes (along with the Tide Pods) popping into the washer and standing out post-wash!

They’re a 3-in-1 detergent that cleans, brightens, and fights stains all in one pac which is awesome because it saves me from sorting garments into piles to coordinate with my plethora of detergent options in my linen closet. I also love that they’re small and lightweight just for the fact that I don’t have a washer/dryer in my apartment and I’m usually washing clothes at the Laundromat or at friend’s houses! Tide Pods are way lighter than my gallon containers. pod_lores

Post-dry...
