58 Days to Go: $1 Remake

When I first saw this skirt, I thought I was going to use the fabric for curtains in my bathroom!  I ended up changing my mind due to the fact that there wasn't enough material, and kept the skirt intact! New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - 58

It was a bit too big at the waist and a bit too long, so some easy adjustments are en route to make this piece perfect!

Because I'm going to get all up in this elastic waist, I removed on side of the clasp with a seam ripper which I'll be re-adding down the road.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Remove Clasp - 58

I opened the side seam at the waist to begin to adjust the elastic.  This skirt is too big and I need to make it more fitted!!

I measured and pulled out about four inches of elastic...

...trimmed it off...

...and pinned the seam shut, in preparation for sewing!

I hit the length next!  I cut off about eight inches...

...and began to pin the bottom of the skirt in place.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Hem Prep - 58

I laced up my machine with matching yellow-y/lime thread and sewed my hem in place as well as the open edge at the waist.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Sewing Machine - 58

Post sewing machine, I started up that hand stitching I called out earlier to reattach the clasp to the skirt.

With all the steps tied up and complete, I paired the skirt with a lavender tank top and some vintage mules, and had my outfit together for the day!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - After Skirt - 58

The colors are super springy, and are such a lovely palette of shades!  It actually kind of reminds me of the duvet on my bed!  Perfect for a day of errands or meetings if you throw on a blouse instead of a tank top.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Skirt ECU - 58

I'm highly obsessed with this piece!  It fits well, it's the right length, and the colors just make me smile.

It's awesome when things like a skirt can do that :)

59 Days to Go: Wednesday Giveaway!

I've been obsessing over orange lately - not sure if it's because I'm seeing it splattered through all of the magazines I've been sorting through or if it's just permeating through my head from the sun...I'm totally living in a little sea of orange.  I even found an amazing orange-y dress over the weekend that I can't wait to redo and I'm also having some fun with dye! So with all of my orange-ness going on, today's giveaway is in the citrus family...a vintagey fabric beaded bracelet and a lip gloss with an orange shimmer.  I have one of these glosses and I'm obsessed.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Orange Giveaway

To enter, leave a comment of a color you're excited about wearing.  It's going to be fall soon, so maybe you're thrilled to wear some eggplant (color, not the actual fruit, unless there's a way to dehydrate/preserve/turn into a necklace) or maybe you're relishing in the sun holding onto the melons and pinks?  A winner will randomly get chosen next week (8/28) and congrats to Keenzi for winning last week's Smart Glass necklace!!

Orange you glad you're entering this fun contest?!  (Sorry, couldn't resist. Drum roll!)

60 Days to Go: My Neighbor's Mom's Donation

So last year when I was moving out of my old place into my new one, I had a final "get rid of too many years of stuff sale" with my lovely neighbor JC.  I was trying to get rid of many things no longer needed (and not allowed to come with to the new place), so I kept my eyes off of his goods, however his mom had a few pieces she was selling and gave me this one. The embroidery was incredible, but it needed a little bit of work to make it pop on me.  She graciously gave it to me so I couldn't say no!!

I decided to wait for just the right time to work on it...when Los Angeles started feeling it was an egg frying on a skillet.  Mmm, fried eggs!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Too Hot

(Pretty much how it's been for the past few weeks!

I began by cutting the piece in two...

I was left with the below, which I'll use very soon...

...and then the skirt of it!!  With the skirt part, I started to remove the stitches on each side seam that ran down the sides of the legs.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Seam Ripper

I'm turning this part into a halter top!!  With the one side of the embroidery detached from the back panel of the piece...

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Detaching Time

I worked on the other side next!  I cut panels of white fabric (about four inches in width) right next to the embroidery sections which I'm going to use as back ties...

...and then flipped the piece around!!  With the back panel of white fabric, I trimmed off the top 1/3 of it, folded it under, and prepped an area to sew a new seam.  I also pinned the raw edges of the ties and the area next to the embroidery to prepare to sew.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Flipped Around

I sewed everything in place!!  Because the back white panel was still too large across to fit at my back, I took it in a few inches to make it fit comfortably.  The white ties will assist in really making it super fitted!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - SEwing Machine

With everything sewn in place, I took the two embroidered panel ends and tied them around my neck...

...and then tied the white panels together at my back!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Back View

The weather couldn't own me anymore wearing this piece!!  I got to wear it for a fun night celebrating AM with a backyard movie party in his honor.  This year, The Princess Bride was picked as our screener!

And it's just not a movie party without some candy!!

I filled my bucket with treats...

...and then everyone else followed suit!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Team Snacks

Not only was the shirt completely weather suitable, it was party chic!!  I got lots of embroidery comments and I loved being able to say that the piece began as a slit at the bottom of the dress!

JC, thanks to you and your lovely mom for sharing this piece with me!!  I can't wait to get working on the other part next!!
