DIY Pom Pom Shorts

I've been obsessed with Pom Pom shorts since I saw them in Bali last year and now I'm seeing pairs pop up everywhere! So, why not DIY a set to rock this summer? (PS, it's so easy!)

I've been seeing a slew of different styles online, with all different price points, but the DIY pair I'm going to show you is only going to cost around $5. Seriously.

Pom Pom Inspiration Shorts:

They're going to be my poolside, road trip, Sunday afternoon shorts ALL SUMMER LONG!

Check out the easy steps...

First, the shorts. I found these for $4.99 at Ross! (Peep the tag below...)

They were the perfect breezy, elasticky pair of shorts that would make for the best base for my DIY. And the color...right up my coral loving alley!

I used ivory pom pom trim by May Arts and found a matching pinkish thread to use for stitching.

This is totally something you can use a sewing machine for or even fabric glue - I went with some hand stitching to keep the trim affixed to the edge of the shorts.

Basic straight stitches all around the circumference of the shorts legs. It's something you can craft on a car ride, on the plane, or while watching the newest season of Orange is the New Black from the comfort of your couch. :)

In no time, the pom pom shorts were complete!

I think they totally rival the inspiration shorts I found online!

Totally budge-friendly and SO perfect for the hot summer temps!

My new friend agrees.

Now I want to make them in every color!

But these are such a fun way to elevate a basic garment into something a little more special with some basic embellishing. Summer craft success!

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend! I was in San Diego for Father's Day and couldn't resist pulling up a little archived Kodak shot of me and my dad.

Remake: Blue Checkered Ruffled Dress

Hi you guys!! Today's piece is SO good. The dress looked like it was straight out of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

I went straight into musical theater mode and gave my best "I'm getting the vapors" look.

But, look at those SLEEVES!

That collar too...

This piece needed some serious help to turn it into something that you don't need to be on a stage to wear!

Before we start, I saw this lovely little tag inside the piece - love when there are little hints of who wore this before me!

If I only had time to tag my clothes too...

I started off with the sleeves! Took them a bit shorter and got rid of the tightly cuffed wrist area.

Next came that skirt!

That major ruffle at the bottom was definitely coming off.

Once the length and arms were shortened, I prepped all of the raw edges before sewing new seams and a new hem.

We're almost there! The collar came next. I just wasn't into the lace trimmed edging...

...so with a seam ripper, I took off both sides of the collar. One side down...

...and now they're completely off!

I pinned the collar back together and stitched a basic seam around the edges to keep it in place before I began to craft a new neckline.

I trimmed a straight line down the center of the piece, using the edge of the square pattern as a guide, then pinned under my trimmed area to form a V, before sewing everything in place.

From dowdy to fun summer dress!

I paired this with some tan booties, my FAVE safari purse (as I like to call it) that my mom found at Goodwill in Charlotte, a vintage belt that came from my dad's high school collection, and a pair of aviators!

A big patterned piece made super wearable by pairing it with more neutral shades. It was just the thing for a little summer dinner party complete with brownies.
