Scene It: Side Effects

It’s totally movie season right now with the Golden Globes just ending (how fab did Tina Fey look??) and the Oscars right around the corner, that I’ve been on a total movie kick.  I just got a sneak peek of Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects, which I’ve been super excited to see and which also comes out on February 8th.  I am a total Soderbergh fan (Traffic is my fave), adore Rooney Mara (not only is she a super talented actor, I love her fashion sense), and was excited to see Jude Law back in action (we’ve miss you Jude). For those of you who haven’t seen it, check out the trailer to get a little taste…

I love thrillers and suspense films, which is shocking because hearing creaks in my apartment totally freak me out, and Side Effects totally kept me on edge.  The movie delves deep in the world of psychiatry and pharmaceuticals (anti-depressants, specifically), which becomes a character in its own rite along with Law, Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Channing Tatum.  (This isn’t Magic Mike gals, however Channing rocks a suit like nobody’s business.)

Jude Law plays a psychiatrist who treats his patient (Rooney Mara) with the fictional drug Ablixa, whose commercial rivals any of the ones that we’ve seen over and over again with a long list of varying side effects.  (Those commercials always worry me because the side effects seem worse than what the pill is actually treating!)  She deals with her own sadness and depression after Tatum (who plays her husband) gets released from jail because of an insider trading mishap, and then the twists and turns and car crashes ensue.

I pat myself on the back when I can guess what happens before it actually does, so as much as I thought I was on point, I was totally off.  That’s the fun of this movie.

Also, I couldn’t help but focus on some of the wardrobe – I always find myself wanting to wear some of the costumes that the actors don!  Does that ever happen to you?  In this instance, I loved this piece Rooney wore - it was a white, sleeveless blouse with gold buttons.

While watching the film, I knew I wanted to DIY this piece and had just the right vintage blouse to start off with.

I began my project by removing the sleeves with a seam ripper.

Once my sleeves were removed...

...I pinned down the raw edges.

Next, I stitched the arm holes down to really mimic the structure of Rooney's piece.

The white buttons were fabric covered, so instead of replacing them with gold ones (which is an alternative method), I painted over each one with Krylon’s Pale Gold Leafing Pen...

After three steps, I have a shirt that’s a DIY version of Rooney’s Side Effects one!!

I paired my new top with jeans, however Rooney wears a white skirt along with.

And, if I were wearing this piece during the film, this is how I would have looked from all the twists and turns!!

New Dress A Day - Side Effects DIY

I was totally entertained by the film and if you're a fan of psychological thrillers then you're going to enjoy watching everything unravel.  When I saw the trailer, I was so intrigued and couldn't wait for the movie -  I wanted to see who's bloody footprints were on the floor, what the pills were being used for, and why Jude Law screams, "I want my life back", and when everything unfolded, I was thoroughly satisfied.  Not to mention, I was definitely doing a little nervous, nail-biting action from the edge of my seat.

Side Effects comes out on February 8th, and it might just be what the doctor ordered.  (Yep, had to get that pun in there.)

Tina's NDAD Creation

I have my cooking club coming up in a week (it's Valentine's Day themed and if you have any fun ideas, leave them in the comments below!!)  Tina's piece totally tied in to my recipe gathering.  Check it out!

I was introduced to you site about a year and half ago by my dear friend Kelly. I have been collecting re-makeables ever since, but by far this is my favorite. I found this wonderful mushroom fabric and just had to buy the remaining 2 1/2 yards of it.  I collect mushrooms, so for a total cost of about $4.00, I bought fabric without any idea of what I was going to do with it.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Upcycled Apron

I was getting ready to bake and when I reach for my apron, the light bulb went off!

What did the light bulb say, Tina??  (Couldn't resist...)

I took my fabric and made a mushroom out of it!  I used a small piece of brown flannel from my stash for the stem, then made a "waist band" and stitched that in place after inserting a red washcloth (which I stole from my linen closet) to be the area used to wipe my hands on.

I am so excited to combine two of my loves; mushrooms and cooking!

And, PS, what an awesome kitchen you have to cook in!!  I dream about the day when I have enough counter space to properly prepare and lay out all my bowls and ingredients, instead of doing things individually based on the amount of room I have.

I just ate a delicious mushroom gnocchi tonight and this apron goes hand in hand.  Love this Tina – you look adorable.  Having a cute apron to wear makes cooking just that much better!!

The After Look:

I took the after shot at my girlfriend JS' casa and kept it pretty simple.  New styling gives this piece a brand new vibe.  Wanna see??

I went to Accessory Town and paired the dress with a few of my favorite essentials.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Upcycled

I wore a vintage velvety tiger print belt along with a pair of gold, sparkly DKNY tights (a Marshalls find - my fave spot for tights!) to bring some yellowy tones into the dress.

The necklace is a DIY one too!  I took a thick chain and pinned a sequined dove appliqué to it to create a fun statement necklace.  For this go, I wanted a little action going on up top!

I also paired this with a H&M cardi for when it got chillier (yep, it's back to normz - 75 degree weather!!) along with a steal of a pair of booties from Cotton On.  No joke, five bones!  I even bought an extra pair to DIY.  (You'll see that shortly...)

So here are both looks - super simp Look #1 and full of flair Look #2!

I'm loving going back and re-envisioning these pieces in a whole new light!  The before shot was taken about 2 1/2 years ago which is CRAZY to me!  Oh, the evolution!

Belt, Vintage // Tights, DKNY // Booties, Cotton On // Necklace, Vintage with pinned applique // Cardigan, H&M (thrifted)

Oh, and that black spot on my shin?  Yeah, it's not a bruise (shocker) it's a big flying spider that only flew away once I flicked it off of me.  Super cute, eh?

TGIF!!
