13 Days to Go: $1 Remake

It's denim day!! New Dress A Day - DIY - vintage denim dress - before

There's a whole lotta denim going on, however I'm loving this lighter shade, so that's the good part!!

I love this Stella McCartney piece that Kirsten Dunst is wearing, so I'm using this as my inspiration!!

I kept telling myself, "we'll get there Maris, we'll get there!!"

To create a similar look, I took off the top of the dress first!

I trimmed about two inches higher than the pockets that were on the dress.

With the top of the piece gone, I began to see how low I wanted to take it and began to pin the area where I wanted to sew a new seam.

I took in the top of the dress a bit and sewed down the edges...

...and went to work on the straps next that were coming from one of the sleeves!

I trimmed the sleeve into two strips...

...sewed the edges under and then stitched them to the top of the dress!

I had to affix some hardware to help keep one of the openings on the front of the dress shut!

To mimic the exposed buttons on Kirsten's Stella McCartney piece, I took off the denim panel that covered the buttons and button holes.  With this piece gone, the brown buttons really pop and take it from dated to a bit more current!

I adjusted the length next.  I wanted it to be a bit shorter, so I trimmed and sewed!  I added my own little touch and gave it a slight mullet style look, creating a little dip in the back of the hem, going lower than in the front.

I love how this piece turned out!!  It's awesome for fall to pair with boots and a sweater, or perfect in the heat!  Kirsten wore hers to Coachella in the desert and that's how it's feeling outside today!

My day-to-night look ended up staying the same because of the heat, but we'll revisit this piece and give it a proper evening look soon!

From long sleeved to denim straps, this dress is getting a lovely second life!

15 Days to Go: $1 Remake

Happy Monday!! I'm highly obsessed with this number...

New Dress A Day - DIY - 80s Prom Dress - Upcyclec

I've had this piece for a very long time and finally just got my hands on it.  Feels like 80s prom, ne c'est pas??  ...if I only waited until Halloween, I could totally be channeling my inner Phoebe Cates/Kelly LeBrock/Ally Sheedy right now!!

First plan of attack...cutting the dress into two pieces!!!

I snipped away the top black layer from the bottom.

New Dress A Day - DIY - 80s Prom Dress - Cut off the black

I pinned under the leftover black fabric to the skirt and stitched it in place.

I was left with this glorious mess, which will probably find a use somewhere down the road.  Can't tell you where yet, but I'm sure we'll see its pouffy mass again down the line!

New Dress A Day - DIY - 80s Prom Dress - Pouffy Sleeve Remnants!

I have to say, with a quick trim and stitch, the new piece was completely finished!  OK, well almost completely finished.  I added a vintage brooch to the bust (I gathered and cinched with the pin) just to give a little bit of oomph!

New Dress A Day - DIY - 80s Prom Dress - After

The ruffled-ness is in full effect now and I'm totally ok with it!  With the sleeves and black fabric gone, the ruffles can totally take center stage.  PS, anyone else Center Stage fans?  (Hello early Zoe Saldana and my fave guilty pleasure movie circa early 2000s!!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - 80s Prom Dress - Party Dress Time!

PS, these pics make my legs look whiter than they've ever been too!!  I think they'll totally come in handy for my real Halloween costume though.  I guess you can say I'm totally planning ahead?!?

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!
