Copycat: Michael Kors Lace Dress

I was first turned onto this gorgeous Michael Kors dress when I saw Kerry Washington wearing it on Scandal last season. It was a piece that I always kept in the back of my mind and when I scored the perfect white dress, my remake was on!! (For those Scandal fans, you can head over here to HelloGiggles to read the post with the full TV tie in!)

Here is the actual Michael Kors' dress...

The key to this piece is the structure – a good white shift dress base will do the trick! My copycat piece is from Dorothy Perkins and it had virtually the same structure as the Michael Kors piece above. I had been keeping my eyes peeled for the right white dress for a while - it was always on my "thrift list" when I was scouring the racks.

Here’s a rundown of the supplies you’ll need:

1. Black lace trim (This is something that you can get from your local fabric store. I went with the widest trim I could find to mimic the thickness on the original piece., but if you can't find a thick trim, you can always stitch two smaller pieces together.)

2. Sewing machine/needle & thread/safety pins – any tool that will affix the lace to the dress.

3. White dress (the Dorothy Perkins one I used is on major sale now!)

The first step is to attach your lace to the center of the dress. I pinned the lace in place all the way around the torso of the dress.

Depending on which method you choose, either safety pin the lace in place (this is great if you don't want to fully commit to the lace around the center of your dress), hand sew the lace down, or use a sewing machine to stitch the lace in place. I used my sewing machine and chose a zig zag stitch to allow for a bit of stretch, since the dress was made of a ribbed waffle material.

That's it! Two easy steps and the copycat look is complete!

It's a chic party dress or something that could work layered with a blazer or jacket to give it a more profesh look.

DIY: Swarovski Encrusted Heels

I was first turned onto these Steve Madden heels when I saw them being worn by Emma Roberts on American Horror Story: Coven this season. They were sparkly (!!) and the perfect pair of glam kicks to add to the wardrobe!  (For those American Horror Story fans, you can head over HERE to HelloGiggles to read this post with the TV tie in!)

They were Steve Madden (Spycee) and when I saw them on her feet I wanted to craft my own pair...so I did!!

Here's how you make them...

The key to these shoes are the straps and I found a pair of heels that were virtually identical (GoJane Ladder Up Heels for $19!) in style to the pair that Emma wore.

On top of the shoes, you'll also need...

1. E6000 Glue

2. Bead Tweezers/Toothpicks

3. Crystals (these are Swarovski crystals in assorted sizes)

The gist of this project is to dab the crystals and affix them to the straps – I put a bit of glue on a paper plate, dabbed the back of the stone, and then affixed it to the strap of the shoe.

The pattern of the stones on the original pair were just a mix of different sizes scattered on the straps, so I put different sizes of stones down in a non-consistent pattern.

This is definitely something that takes a little bit of time but is the perfect thing to do while catching up on your DVR (did that) or waiting for pumpkin bread to bake (did that too), with some help from pals, or my mom in this instance, but look at the results…

DIY: Garden Pick Hair Clip

On the 5th day of holiday DIY my true love gave to me, a garden pick turned into a clip for all to see.  I'm a rhyming machine!! New Dress A Day - DIY - garden pick hair clip

Day 5: Garden Pick Hair Clip

1. E6000 Glue

2. Hair clips

3. Garden picks

What happens when you go to Home Depot to grab painter's tape and end up scouring all of the aisles??  You pick up things from the garden section (decorative picks) to turn into accessories!!

See how to create this adorable DIY in three easy steps!

First break off the wooden dowel attached to the garden pick...

Next add glue to the back of the pick...

This project couldn't be easier.  Just think outside the box a little and try to come up with other things that could be made into clips as well because the world is your oyster!!

(Sidenote; I made two of these clips, so if there are any takers for the other one, let me know!  Present will head your way...)
