Lots of big, extra ruffles going on!

Feeling like the piece has just swallowed me.

Let's get this wearable!!

I began with removing one sleeve!!  I started removing stitches from the sleeve that was "in the middle" of all the ruffle action.

I got my one sleeve off...

...and then made a snip at the shoulder to completely open this side of the dress.

I wanted to follow the design and flow of that big ruffle, so I thought that turning this into a one-arm, asymmetrical piece would be just the thing to make it work!  With this side of the dress opened up, I began to fold and form the diagonal shape, pinning it in place.

I still needed to take the top portion in, but wanted to get the diagonal shape stitched down.  It's much easier to work when there aren't all kinds of pins holding the "work in progress"section in place.

Once the neckline was stitched, I started working on the sleeve that was leftover.  I cut it short...

...and then got some elastic ready to add to the end.  I pinned under the raw edge leaving about 1/2" which was going to be the area to insert the elastic.

I stitched a new seam at the sleeve and then inserted the elastic in the open space, using a safety pin to guide the elastic around.

The last step was taking in the top of the piece.  I measured the area that needed to be fitted and stitched it all in place.

The final look??

I paired the dress with a skinny belt and did some ruching at the waist.  I was thinking about shortening the dress but then thought if this was the plan of action, keeping it longer to save some length when it got pulled from the waist would be the smart choice.

I had some fun jumping around to really show the maximum wave of that ruff.  That's a big ruff!!

I also paired the dress with a vintage purse from the collection - it has an old Dooney & Bourke vibe, but is just a nameless, lookalike, cream/brown purse.  If it was a little larger, it would have been the perfect camera bag!

Oh, and those sunnies are from Forever 21 and are my new favorite purchase.  I ended up getting them on the fly when I left my sunglasses at home while I was out running errands on the brightest day ever.  Sometimes the forced purchase turns out better than the ones planned!!

I love the boho feel of the piece now.  It still maintains the flow, but doesn't feel overwhelmingly busy or heavy!!

Happy Monday, friends!!! And stay warm and safe all my East Coasters getting ready to get hit with crazy snow! xo

Vintage 80s Teal Suede Sash Dress

Vintage Teal Sash Dress - 80s
Vintage Teal Sash Dress - 80s

If my mom wore this dress in the 80s, it would have been one that I coveted as a kid!

The teal suede sash in front? Better than Miss America!

And that print! It's like an abstract piece of art - brush strokes all over.

It's a little much as is...

...but I'm going to make it winter ready in just a few steps!

The sash was the first thing to go! I grabbed my seam ripper and delicately began removing the stitches holding the sash in place.

With it removed...

...I had to restitch the seam at the shoulder to close this area up. I pinned the open portion and prepped for a quick stitching!

The rest of the dress was a bit too big, so I took in a few inches to make it a bit more fitted.

I removed the extra teal buttons that were on the dress to keep the sash in place and finished all my sewing.

With a little belt cinching action (as well as a neutral color to break up all the jewel tones), my new dress was ready for a Denver day of walking!

I had a sweater and gloves with me, but the weather was in the 70s!! I thought I left LA to get snow and sleet, not warmish temperatures :) I was able to legitimately wear the sweater at night though when it got a bit chillier.

These boots tho... The best pair of walking boots I could have asked for!

(PS - for Cyber Monday, if you're looking for some good boots for the fam, Sierra Trading Post is having some major sales. That's where these came from! Lunch break = boots browsing today!)

I loved how the lining of the dress was teal too. When I walked, and depending on how the dress fell, you could see it pop through.

When there's a lion statue, you have to pet it. It had quite the furry mane!

I loved how this turned out! Removing a dated sash and just making the piece a little more fitted changes everything!

This dress is going to get tons of wear back home in LA!!

Winter Wardrobe Week!!

I've arrived to the wintry Colorado temperatures to spend some quality time with some of my favorite people. It feels amazing to have a little taste of the cold weather right now! I couldn't have packed more sweaters and coats for this short trip, though. The amount of pieces that I fit into my check on bag...astonishing. A girls gotta be prepared, right? These are just a few pieces that you'll see over the next few days...

Loving this 80s dress with that aqua suede panel front and center. It's like my Miss America sash!!

Yep, those are screen printed feathers.

This is one of those pieces where people were shaking their heads and saying to themselves, "does that girl know what she's buying?"

Vintage Sweatshirt Jacket

Basic sweater with some not-so-basic discoloration. I have plans for this glorious oversized sweater that's going to be perfect when paired with my snow boots!

I hope you all have safe travels these next few days! Let the winter wardrobe week begin!!
