Oscar Week: Argo

Feb 19, 2013 | 44 Comments

Oscar Week is in full effect!

(Just an update for those who missed yesterday because of President’s Day celebrating – perhaps you saw Lincoln?? - this week is going to be all about the nominated movies, with each day having a different Oscar movie-inspired-outfit.)

The Oscars!!

Today’s feature is Ben Affleck’s Argo!

Argo

I found something super 70s-esque to work for the film.

BEFORE

Yep, this one is a doozy!

I didn’t zip the dress up all the way so you could see all the material that made up the neck!  This dress is PERFECT for winter!!

70s Fab!

I really loved the skirt – the pleats, the pockets, and the length – but the brown ribbed top was way less desirable.  The dress would have been fine as is for movie purposes, but I wanted to make something that I’d actually wear.

I decided to remove the sleeves.  I seam ripped…

No more long sleeves!

I pinned…

Took off them sleeves!!

…then stitched new armholes.

Sewin’

I had other intentions – to add mini red bows in a line down the front, mostly…

Grosgrain bows!

…but when I had them pinned in place, I just didn’t like.

I’m just not that into you.

I opted to keep it simple and sweet and instead took a red sash, put it through the belt loops at the waist right above the pockets, and tied a bow in front.  I’m actually super jazzed with how it turned out.

AFTER

Like, really jazzed.  I can’t wait to rewear this piece!

I had a pair of my mom’s vintage shades that really made this piece feel like something straight out of Argo.

Vintage Shades

I mean could I be sitting in this room too??

The cast of Argo!

My favorite thrifted jacket paired perfectly with the ensemble.  Red leather, big collar, big gold buttons…I got it for a steal!! (I won’t even say how much it was because it’s that insane.)

Pop that collar!

The accessories were the most fun to pair – I actually hadn’t worn the red sash in a very long time!!  It was like it was brand new because I totally forgot that I even owned it!  (Love when that happens!)

I would have been the costumer on Argo….

This is my, “please save us, Tony Mendez” photo.

Help us, Ben Affleck!

I won’t give away any spoilers this week, but my fave line from the movie…yep, it’s Alan Arkin saying “Argo F Yourself”.  Who else is in cahoots??   This could be my new fave curse word (if James Lipton were to ask…), but only if I pretend I’m Alan Arkin when I’m saying it.

A new Oscar nominated movie tomorrow!!

  • Allie

Really love the dress! My only critique is to pair it with different shoes; the high slouchy style of the ones you have on now make your legs look a lot thicker than they actually are. Keep transforming!

  • Diana

OMG total flashback to an outfit I made in the 70s, with a full length skirt, jacket, AND pants… in that very plaid/houndstooth, colors and all! Thanks for a trip down memory lane! The outfit was cute!

    • newdressaday

      Thanks D!

  • Jo

This is my favourite redo so far. And I totally disagree with Allie – you are totally rocking those boots!❤❤❤

    • newdressaday

Woo! Thanks Jo – those boots make me feel like a supermodel!

Wow Marissa, my sister had a skirt in that exact plaid back in the day. You truly rocked the era. Love it!!!!

  • LinB

Oh, I’m having flashbacks to my college days, in the late 1970s! I like the red sash with this, it looks very fresh. I am, though, totally unable to comprehend the (now decades-long) trend to put a turtle neck atop a sleeveless bodice. I just don’t get it: if it’s hot enough outside to go sleeveless, why on earth would you strangle yourself with layers and layers of fabric close to your neck? If it’s cold enough outside for a turtle neck sweater, why would you not cover your arms?

    • sheryl k

good question, and I think the answer is: the great lines…the ribbed sweater, the toned arms, the high neck–add up to a long, lean , hip look.

      • newdressaday

        I love it too :)

    • newdressaday

A, I like this look and B, I live in LA where it isn’t cold, but it isn’t hot either :)

      • LinB

Ah, well, perhaps it’s just that my neck was always too short for turtlenecks, and my arms are too flabby for sleeveless at my age, that prevents me from imagining myself in such a blouse. It looks great on you, I will admit. (My mother’s friends insist on wearing short-shorts and sleeveless tops all summer. Because of how they look, I’ve made a vow not to do that myself, ever again. Even in private. But, when you’re over 90, you are allowed not to give a flip that you’ve burned out the retinas of passersby, one supposes.)

  • Dianna

It looks so cute! I think you made a great choice with the bow!

  • Jamie W

Brilliant. You could sell that at Anthropologie for a small fortune.

  • Janet D

Fiercely fearless in that number, yes you are!

    • newdressaday

Best compliment of the day!! xo

  • http://www.facebook.com/tollyfaye Tolly Bockbrader

Glad you didn’t do the original bow thing.

    • newdressaday

      Agreed :)

  • Allison Woods

    I think it’s still a little too retro-looking.Cool though.

  • Meghan Elizabeth

    still haven’t watched Argo, whoops…

    • newdressaday

You still have time… (It’s out on DVD and really fantastic! I had no idea this happened – such an amazing story!)

  • cre8soap

    LOVE this look !!!!!

  • Dawn

Very cool outfit, I remember those skirts with pocket/ belt loop combo, I love those boots, they really bring home the look. Awesome.

  • Sue

    Big improvement. :)

    • newdressaday

      Thanks Sue :)

  • Jessica

    OMG I want it!

    • newdressaday

      We can totally share…

  • http://rinaz.net rinaz

Oh wow, I don’t normally comment, but I just had to drop by to let you know how much I love this outfit and how fab I think it looks like on you. Totally a great improvement and I’m glad that you didn’t go with the original mini bows! It looks so super luxe and expensive, I wish I had something like that! :-)

    • newdressaday

Yay, so glad you like Rinaz! Thanks for dropping by the comments too!

Nice :) . I’m getting ready for a costuming workshop this weekend and wish I had that outfit for the 70′s decade section! Not that I don’t have others… I guess I just wish I had that outfit, hehe.

  • Ginia Magers

My favorite redo as well! I would totally buy the whole outfit and wear it!

  • Barbara

Love the cute remake and have been lurking for a long time. When I was looking through, the bows made me want to comment for the first time! I wanted to suggest a bloopers reel (in keeping with the Oscars theme). How about other thing that didn’t work out the way you thought the would? It could be fun and encouraging since we all make mistakes!

    • newdressaday

Ha, yes! A blooper reel is a genius idea. I’ll start gathering and do a fun post soon :)

  • jenjenjenni86

Very cool! Love the pop of red!

  • Carolyn

How do you think that dress would look with a chain belt? I remember seeing chain belts used with a lot of houndstooth outfits back in the 70′s. Remember Laugh In?

  • Dawn

that is really cute. I like it.

  • Denise

    Love it!

  • Amber Howald

My iphone autocorrects “arg!” to “argo”! So now I just type ‘argo” when I really want to say “F yourself”. ;)

    • newdressaday

      Best thing ever!!

  • Lena A.

Hi Marissa! I LOVE it! MUCH, MUCH better! Kisses from Portugal!

  • Laura Whitman

You look so adorable! I love this 70′s inspired piece! Also, that bag is wonderful!

    xoxo,

    Laura

  • SkyeF

Loved the dress as it was bc that’s just how I roll but equally adore it as is, you could even wear a long sleeved red or tan tee underneath if it actually got cold enough for layers ;)

  • bloepper

    you ROCK!!

  • Angela

That is so cute. I think I would have liked a red wide waist leather belt better but hey, that read sash and bow pops too! I like red and brown.

  • holly

    winner!
