Friday Remake

This dress was one that I snagged in Phoenix back in November.  I was doing a segment for The List (you’ll see the clip at the bottom of the post) and was Goodwill-ing it with the host (Jan Jeffcoat).  This was the number that I bought because I was really just in love with the gorgeous fabric and colors.

The one main issue was that from waist down, it was completely open.

BEFORE

Like, if a big gust of wind came while I was shooting this pic, my lady parts would be on display.  (PS, now I have that HEINOUS “On Display” song  that Melissa Gorga sang on RHONJ in my head.  That was my guilty pleasure while I was writing my book – thanks Bravo!  Any other “guilty pleasure-ers” out there?)

I love grosgrain ribbon, but this was a bit too much as the belt.

Too much grosgrain!

Time to work!

Now, my original intention while in Phoenix was to shorten this and make it a sundress, however when I got it home I just loved the length.  I also loved the big ruffle at the bottom and thought by keeping it long, it would be a little more special.  (Plus I have a summer wedding to attend that this will work perfectly for!!)

I decided to keep all the seams in place and to just stitch up the big, gaping, slit down the front!!  I pinned the dress from right below the waist to hem (there are buttons up top at the bust that actually work and aren’t for show, which rules!) and then added a hook and eye at the waist to make it easy to take on and off.

Pin that slit!!

With the dress pinned, I stitched it closed using up all my thread!  OK, that’s a bit dramatic…I did not use all my thread, but it was one crazy long stitch!

Longest stitch ever?

I bunned it, vintage belted it (I’ll use a different, less casual belt for the wedding), clutched it, heeled it, and sunglassed it to make my dress party worthy!

Can you dig the sunshine?

I mean, what a huge difference some stitching makes!!

AFTER

I kind of feel like a princess in this dress.  Like a Goldie Hawn/60s/cartoon princess!  I really can’t wait to wear it again!!

Kisses!

Here’s the segment for your viewing pleasure.  I rewore one of my FAVORITE pieces ever that I dyed cornflower blue while we shot at Goodwill. Hopefully this will also give you good warm weather vibes…it was heavenly in AZ.

Happy holiday weekend!!

  • Sue

You are looking all summery glam. Love it.

  • Jennifer

I really like this dress and I’m glad that you kept the integrity of the dress because it looks fab as a maxi.

    • newdressaday

Thanks Jennifer – I was toying with a few ideas and just couldn’t bring myself to cut!

  • DinaB

This dress reminds me of “Laugh In” from the early ’70′s. I can totally picture Goldie Hawn wearing this! Love how your hair shines with the sun on it!
side note: Happy Birthday to my daughter Brittney! Wow 26 already.
    Love you, Mom

Looks great — love the vintage handbag, too!

  • Karen in Seal Beach

You make my day, Marisa. I get SO happy when I read your blog. I think it should be a required reading in every psychology class around the country. Keep up the great fun!

  • Sarah_H.

Yep, that dress has a definite 70′s vibe going. You will have to show us how you style it for the wedding. I love this put together, with all the yellows. Great vintage chic. Makes me want to dig out my old Carole Littles that I have been embarrassed to wear the last few years. I am going to get out some of those great drapy prints and pair them with neutrals and solids. Not so much redos as restyles. I’ll send you pictures.

    • newdressaday

Yes, bring those out Sarah!! Don’t be embarrassed…if you feel good in it and own it, everyone’s going to love. Would love to see pics – restyling is just as amazing as redoing!! Looking forward to them…

  • Lavamom

Matches the wallpaper on your website!

  • Natasha

I hate long straight stitching, I get so bored :D

    • newdressaday

Agreed!! I need company to keep me entertained… :)

it’s like 1960s married Jane Austen, it’s so perfect!!

    • newdressaday

YES! You’re always on the same aesthetic front at me Ren. Love it!

  • Dawn

I really love the dress as it is too, sans the gape in front, and was hoping you wouldn’t change it! Really cute summer wedding dress. I really love it.

  • KJ

I adore this! I also love that you are blogger and AUTHOR! How fun!

  • Blondie

Love the dress–having a flash back to my 70′s days !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Allison Woods

I see a need for modernization here, preferably in the dress (great print) or at least in the styling.

Lovely colors! I don’t mind the flashback feel at all. It’s fun. Not everything has to mimic today’s designers!

  • joeys gal

no. dont like this. i was hoping you would leave the front open, take off the sleeves and wear with a snappy pair of shorts underneath.

  • Meghan Elizabeth

    best princess ever!

    • newdressaday

Um, you made my day. Utterly. Completely. xo

  • Lena A.

    Kisses from Portugal

  • Dawn

I love the dress before and after. it would be perfect for a summer wedding dress in a park or back yard.

  • Tracey

Yawn….so you sewed up a front split….yawn Please go back to transforming garments into something completely different instead of just taking in/sewing up seams or making shorter.

  • Shan in Austin

Love the dress & the news piece. Way to go, girl! :D

  • http://stephaniemcasey.com/ Stephanie M. Casey

Yay. Vintage Yellow maxi. Great print & sleeves.
