Little did I know that my Valentine’s Day outfit would be this one when I first saw it!

BEFORE

I loved the florals and I loved the $2 price tag!

Rain Dance!!

However, it was still feeling super 90s…

Lots o’buttons!

…and needed a little help to bring it away from potentially being a costume from Reality Bites

I adjusted the length first.  The dress fell at the cankle area, and even though it’s swishy and flowy, I wanted to make it a little shorter.

Shortening just a smidge…

I pinned the hem post-trim…

Pinned!

…and then worked on the back.  I’ve seen so many cute dresses and shirts with open hearts on the backs and fronts of them like these guys…

ASOS – $32.45

Pixie Market – $65

…that I used those as my inspiration.  I drew a heart on the inside of the dress, right next to the shoulder in a silver Sharpie.

Heart Doodle!

Instead of keeping the heart completely open, I’m going to add some pink lace, to make the heart sheer-ish!  I took clear nail polish and followed the heart outline.  (I did this so the cotton dress wouldn’t fray when trimming.)

Clear polish time!

After the polish was down, I trimmed out the heart…

Stay in the lines!

…and pinned down lace to the open heart, from the inside of the piece.

Lace Heart!

I stitched my hem…

Stitched hem!

…and stitched my heart…

…and styled the dress to make it look more like something Taylor Swift would wear (which is totally a compliment I received today!)

I belted it, added some pale pink DKNY fishnets, along with a cardigan, some boots, and had my dress complete!

AFTER

I love the hidden heart on my shoulder!  It’s like I have a tattoo!!  A lace, non-permanent, tattoo!

Hidden heart!

The waist cinching was key and the metal flower clasp was a cute little tie in to match the dress print…

“You say, I only hear what I want to.”

The tights were super subtle and they did a stellar job in keeping my legs warm!

Hello accessories!

The dress worked the day to night element quite well…

From day to night!

I added another layer on top of the cardi to make it really work after the sun set.  I love my Valentine-y dress, and got to wear it for my favorite Valentines this year…

I heart A & O!!

We made banana/chocolate dessert quesadillas that were amazing!  I just might wear this dress again on Thursday…it’ll be in the 70s and I can get away without wearing a cardigan so the little lace heart it totally prominent!!

  • Diana

Very cute! And I like that the heart is on the back, so it can be worn more frequently than the other examples!

I like the heart on the shoulder area instead of the middle!

  • It’s an EU thing

Love it! Should raid some of my mother’s old flowery dresses!

    • newdressaday

      Do it!!

  • Linda

I usually love all that you do, but for me, the heart looks tacky. Maybe I just need to see a clearer photo to like it.

  • Cathy Griffin

Love it…especially the heart. But, girl, you need to get yourself some Fray-Chek. It’s so much better and easier than using nail polish!! Highly recommend.

    • jilly bean

hey, at least she didnt hot glue the lace heart on which is TOTALLY where i pictured this going. lol the idea was a cute one, just not executed well.

      • newdressaday

Come on Jilly Bean, the hot gluing of the lace was never going to happen…

    • newdressaday

Girl, I have stashes of Fray Check!! I went another route this time, just to give other ideas for those without it!

  • Sarah_H.

I love the heart on the shoulder! Subtle rather than blatant. And I didn’t think I would like the lace in the heart, but I do, I do.

  • DinaB

It’s nice that Marisa uses common things like the nail polish to combat fraying issues. It’s a quick fix that more people might have on hand. Peek a Boo shapes can be fun!

    • newdressaday

I’m loving the peek a boo!!

  • Lena A.

Hi Marissa! I love the fabric of the dress! Very floral! Looks good on you! Kisses from Portugal!

    • newdressaday

      Thanks Lena!! xo

  • Judy B

The heart is very cute, and looks simple enough that even I could do it! ;-)

    • newdressaday

      You CAN do it!!

  • brenda

so agree with the other opinions about this being so much more versatile choice for the heart placement. it would be easier for the undergarments needed as well. some pizazz without being hard to wear!!!great

    • newdressaday

I loved that I could wear a normal bra with the dress still :)

  • Renee

Why didn’t you use Fray Check on the raw edge instead of nail polish??

    • Renee

Sorry. Didn’t see the other comments about the Fray Check. Nevermind.

  • Dee

Like the lace heart more than the open —looks more deliberate. Happy Fat Tuesday!

    • newdressaday

Happy Fat Tuesday too Dee!! xo

  • PB

I love this one, also the dessert looks delicious! :)

    • newdressaday

It was SO good. Easy, healthy-ish, warm, and yummy!

  • Lauraly

    Super-cute…

  • SkyeF

Oh my, a ‘Stay’ reference. My guiltiest pleasure has to be an entire block of chocolate and Reality Bites. Love your work ;)

    • newdressaday

      Skye, xoxo

  • ms. mary

I love the look of open-back dresses like the ones you showed, but alas, the bra-less look doesn’t work on me. This solution is perfect and I may totally steal it. :) Also loved the Lisa Loeb shout-out! hehe

    • newdressaday

      Lisa Loeb 4eva!

  • Sue

So cute Marisa. You are one talented gal. Love it.

  • Daisy

What an adorable expression on that little boy’s face!

  • Jennifer

I like this – it only took a few easy tweaks to modernize the dress. I love reading this site regularly to get money saving refashioning ideas. I wouldn’t have thought of using clear nail polish as an cheaper alternative to fray check – very cool!

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

That is very cute! Nice trick with nail polish. And I like the length a lot better than the mini skirts in the examples.

  • Laura Whitman

So adorable! The lace heart idea is so perfect!

    xoxo,

    Laura

  • Maria B

I <3 this one!!! Great job Marisa as always!!!

  • Mrs. B

I love this!! Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful projects!
