Where did this week go??  Not sure about you guys but it’s been quite a busy one!  I’ve been working on lots of fun things that you’ll be seeing soon and my hands are tired, not to mention super dry, and I’ve been lathering lotion like crazy!

I was sent a little goodie pack from a most gracious reader, LM, filled with some spa socks and spa treatment gloves to really treat the hands and feet from her company,  Jet Nail Spa.   I’m giving away the second set that was sent, along with a fab Sally Hansen nail polish paint pen to make this a prize pack perfect for a Friday night pamper fest!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Giveaway

Win Me!

To enter this giveaway, share with me any good dry skin tips you might have.  Maybe there is a lotion you go (Lady) gaga over, or a home remedy that you swear by.  I’m always down for beauty tips and love hearing what you have to share!  A winner will be randomly picked next Wednesday (1/30) and a little congratulations goes out to Heather Meredith who won the turquoise prize pack from two weeks ago!

All I can think about is a little pamper day myself, so this giveaway is making me super duper excited.  If only I had a masseuse to give away as well, then we’d really be cooking with gas!!  Next time??  xo Marisa

  • lynaeve

I love using coconut oil to help with my dry skin. thanks for the chance!

  • Sue

As I sit here looking at my incredibly red, chapped hands I will be trying some of these tips too. I can’t keep enough lotion on my hands to help. I have used Eucerin slathered on and then put on gloves.

  • Sofie

A great tip for making hands soft and smooth is rubbing hands together with lemon juice and sugar. Rinse off and your hands are smooth and soft. Lather with your favourite lotion. Also great if they are smelly after eating fresh seafood with your hands. Oh you can use salt too but if you have any cuts it will sting! I use this all the time when I have done garden work (not that often) but lots during winter.

  • Btejkl

We swear by this in my family: rub cuticles with antibacterial ointment just before going to bed. Then, put cotton gloves on. I don’t have cotton gloves so I usually use cotton socks. I get dry, cracked cuticles every winter and this works every time.

It’s crazy how much drinking enough water helps. I hear this constantly and, yet, rarely follow the advice but when I do, amazing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/meg.dailey.3 Meg Dailey

I’ve read that putting lotion on your feet at night and then putting socks on and sleeping that way helps dry feet….not sure if you could try something similar with hands!:)

  • Kate. B.

Whenever I get dry and hands, I mix some everyday sugar with some olive oil and scrub, scrub, scrub. Rinse off the sugar and slather on the lotion. Put on gloves out just sit back for a bit, and let the oil soak in!

  • Jennifer

My mother is a nurse, and swears by Aveeno for everyday use. I try to use non-petroleum based stuff, but Aveeno during the day and Vaseline under gloves/socks at night are really the only things that have worked for me for longer than a few minutes…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=41603120 Emily Haager

Udderly smooth is my go to cream!

  • Kate

I like the peppermint-scented foot lotion from Lush for my feet, and Body Shop’s cacao butter stuff for hands. Drinking a ridiculous amount of water helps, too, although I’ll be trying some of these tips, too. In winter my hands get terribly dry and cracked no matter what I’ve tried. Not fun!

  • http://profiles.google.com/jenna.thomasmckie Jenna Thomas-McKie

Baby oil in the shower – after you’ve finished washing, but before you dry off – rub baby oil into your still wet skin. Really helps with the dry, scaly patches I get on my legs and elbows.

  • Chelsea

I’ve become obsessed with organic coconut oil! I rub it into my skin after I wash my face at night and I wake up all glowy. I haven’t had a single breakout since I started this routine so I am very happy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/gina.nelsen.7 Gina Nelsen

I use Mary Kay extra emollient night cream for my hands, elbows, and it is perfect for lips! It works great!!!

  • Emily

For those super dried hands that are just painful, Vaseline, or bag balm, slathered on at night with white cotton socks over it and a good nights sleep. It feels weird at first, but your hands feel so much better in the morning!! Sometimes no lotion will do the trick!!

  • Gail P

I really like Gold Bond lotion….or for really dry feet, try A&D diaper ointment and some cotton socks!

  • Elise

My best tips are putting on a thick cream or vaseline (I also like Smith’s rose balm) at night and then sleeping with socks over my hands. I recently read that someone puts their socks in the microwave for a few seconds, which feels really good too.

  • Megcetera

Slather your hands with coconut oil and wear 100% cotton socks to bed. You’ll wake up with super soft skin!

  • Melissa

I swear by my humidifier. One in my bedroom and one on my desk at work.

  • Erin

I totally have the same dry skin problem! Here are a few things that I do to combat winter & the effects of rock climbing chalk on my poor little hands: 1) Paraffin dip- it’s genius!!!! My hands are always super soft after a little dip in hot wax. 2) Miracle Hand Repair cream- it’s a super thick cream that isn’t greasy and works well day or night! and 3) Homemade sugar scrub- Just use a 2:1 ratio of sugar to coconut oil, put it in a pretty jar and use it whenever you need an extra moisture boost!

  • Cindy Price

I have very sensitive skin on the backs of my hands that crack and get very dry as soon as the temp hits below 50. I have tried everything and the best lotion is Neutrogena’s Norwegian formula (it comes in scented or unscented). It is very concentrated so I have learned to only use a little on the backs of my hand and then rub my hands together. For lips I like Neutrogena’s Norwegian formula lip balm and when very chapped I swear by Blistex’s DCT (Daily Conditioning Treatment) in the little pot. I wear it overnight. If I can remember to use my N hand cream at night I never have to apply it during the day.

  • Elizabeth H

I still really like using Bath and Body Works lotions as they work fairly well on my hands. (But that could be because I don’t have super dry skin on my hands. My elbows are another story.) But they have this one scent I only found recently called Sweet on Paris and it smells amazing. It smells almost like your in a Paris bakery! It’s a great mix of blackberry, lemon meringue, and vanilla.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504291557 Crystal Kemper

My mom is a quilter and she gets super dry hands. Her favorite remedy is Gold Bond Foot Cream… no joke… She uses the one that’s in a little red and blue tube and it works wonders! When my hands are dry I just use Bath & Body Works lotion. Though, when I was younger, I loved using my dad’s Corn Husker’s lotion. I loved smelling like him even though I don’t remember how well that lotion worked. Haha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dora.g.garciamarquez Dora Garcia Marquez

Hi I love your blog, it gives me so much inspiration and good ideas :-) for my face I use Grape seed oil, it is so light and gives a soft and smooth finish to your skin. I use it for both removing makeup and moisturizing, hope you try it.

  • Annie

Dry skin tip? Two words: Coconut Oil.
Use it like a lotion! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.nucci Sarah Parr Nucci

I sew all the time, and since moving to Montana, the winters are pretty brutal on my hands. I love the high-elevation cream from Origins (and it works on the face), I’ve used the Gold Bond (it’s okay), but my favorite is the bee bar (looks like a bar of bees wax in a tin).

  • http://twitter.com/melissacnewton melissacnewton

It is expensive but L’Occitane’s Dry Skin Hand Cream is the best, 20% shea butter and smells divine! Love the blog!

  • Harmony

I just discovered Gold Bond Ultimate Healing with Aloe. My hands are becoming so soft! We are cold here in NE AZ and my hands are always so dry.

  • Kit

Drink lots of water. Pet my sheep often (natural lanolin in their wool). They love their chins and chests scratched, and I get soft hands and cuticles and conditioned hair (run sheep-y fingers through hair).

  • Edith

My go to remedy for dry skin, burns, insect bites, cuts and everything in between is this wonderful item i can’t do without called PawPaw cream. it is from Australia but is available online. My daughter’s boyfriend from Australia brought me some years ago and I am hooked on it. It is also great for diaper rash. I rub in all over my feet and especially the rough areas of my heel at night when I feel they are extra dry and cracking and then put some socks on overnight. The next morning it feels as smooth as when i get a pedicure.

  • wesley

I use Olay’s ultra moisture bodywash. My legs especially get so dry in these nasty wisconsin winters (current temp is 9 degrees with a windchill that makes it feel like -5) that it’s the only thing from me getting really dry, nasty, bumpy, gross, legs for months at a time!

  • NGS

I’m with everyone who says you need to drink lots and lots of water. I notice that if I slack on my liquid intake for even one day, my lips and cuticles start cracking!!

  • Judy B

I love J R Watkins Vanilla Dry Body Oil Mist. I spray that on while I’m still damp from the shower. It makes my skin incredibly smooth and soft, and it smells heavenly.

  • Kathy

Coconut oil works for me. I also cover myself with any thick body butter after I bathe or shower.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1201564171 Pam Howell

I use Curel Advanced Ceramide treatment. My legs get really dry in the winter and this is the only thing that works.

  • Linda Davis Siess

I slather whatever lotion or potion is handy (ha!) on my poor dry hands at every opportunity, especially after washing them. A tube or pump of something is in just about every room of my house, coat pocket, and purse!

  • elseasea

love trader joe’s coconut butter … feels like … butta’!

  • disqus_Qn4KR67G1J

When I have time (and I can make myself sit still!), I will use warmed olive oil. I haven’t tried the coconut butter yet – I may have to do that this weekend.

  • Alma Zeno

Open a vitamin E capsule and mix it w/your face or body cream. Your skin will get nice and dewy! I do this with my face cream and my skin has never looked better!!!

  • Dani Marie

I usually use Aveeno brand lotion because it makes my skin super soft and doesn’t irritate my skin like some lotions do. If you have sensitive skin, definitely recommend!

  • http://www.facebook.com/vicki.chase.733 Vicki Chase

When I work out, I slather my dry feet in lotion, then put on my socks and shoes. My feet get nice and lotion-ed while I’m working out; the heat helps the lotion absorb.

  • JennyRose

I recently discovered almond oil, and though it feels a little weird rubbing oil on your skin, it makes it so soft!

I also second Alma’s vitamin E recommendation, it’s great for moisturizing, but also for healing small cuts and preventing scars. You can buy straight up Vitamin E cream.

  • Mary Garrett

I love Vanicream, very pure and simple and good for all over . . .

  • Bekah

I get eczema on my hands, so I’m a huge fan of Cortizone’s Eczema Intensive Healing Lotion – but it’s great for any dry skin. It rubs in easily and doesn’t have a strong smell.

  • hc99

Even though I am an Elementary School teacher, I avoid using gel hand sanitizers. Not only are they extremely drying, but ones containing triclosan are especially bad for you. Triclosan has been found to cause lots of problems, including messing with your body’s thyroid hormones. Instead I use a homemade hand sanitizer contains vodka (yes!) and essential oils. You spray it on your hands and it is much less drying. Even then, I try to use it sparingly and rely more on good old-fashioned hand washings. As far as lotion goes, I use Bath and Body Works Sparkling Blackberry Woods body cream after the shower and before bed.

  • Kristina Fukuda

I wash my hands constantly in an attempt to not get sick and a couple of years ago I ended up with dry, cracked skin on my hands. That’s when I discovered a great little product called Hoof Alive. I found it at Rainbow Acres in Marina del Rey, but I would guess other health food shops should have it. It comes in a tub and feels a bit like lip balm. It has a rather distinct smell so I only use it at night, but it works wonders.

  • cidlim

I use virgin organic sesame oil and it works so well! 100% natural without any harmful chemical, naturally beneficial to skin, affordable, and works nicely to moisture my skin? Yes please!

  • Sandy N

I love Deep Sea Cosmetics Dead Sea Hand and Body Lotion. My hands take a beating from all the hand washing I do and this stuff keeps them from getting dry and cracked. Thanks for the opportunity to win.=)

  • Sarah

Mary Kay’s extra emollient cream- works like a charm!

  • Melissa

Good ol’ fashion Petroleum Jelly for dry, cracked, chapped hands!

  • er

i’ve been mixing my regular body lotion with inexpensive 100% aloe gel. My skin has dried out less in between applications and my more expensive lotion has been lasting longer.

  • Hannah

Jergen’s ultra healing lotion is the best. I use it all the time since my hands are so dry from washing all the time (I work in a hospital). Also, after washing my face at night, I use Pond’s dry skin cream on my face every night.

  • Jet Nail Spa

Oh Marissa…I’m so pleased to see you sharing my product, Jet Nail Spa with your readers!! My solution to dry skin – of course my socks and gloves. What your readers might not know is that these items come already preinfused with vitamins, minerals and a unique mosturizing formula from New Zealand. A quick 10 second warm up in the microwave, followed by 10 minutes of wear, leaves your hands and feet soft, supple, plump and refreshed. On another note, as a hand/foot/nail specialist, I have tried pretty much EVERY product out there, and Burts Bees Cuticle Wax is the absolute BEST for dry cracked cuticles. Thanks again for giving me the honor of being able to spoil one of your readers. Linda

  • Rebekah

My kids have struggled with dry skin and excema. The best tips I have for them is, after baths, to slather them down with eucerin cream….when their skin is still wet. It helps to retain the moisture!

  • http://www.facebook.com/zeyhra Cristy Pazera

Straight coconut oil is one of my favorite body moisturizers. Sweet almond oil is my favorite facial moisturizer. Also, 1 part vegetable glycerin, 3 parts sweet almond oil, 5 parts coconut oil, 3 parts filtered water makes a nice moisturizer too! I go with the philosophy that if you can’t/shouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your body!

  • Lisa Kamerman-Ouwersloot

In the evening grate a potatoe, add half a spoon of luke warm water, half a spoon of olive or sunfloweroil, mix this.

Put it on your hands, wait till it is dry, rinse with luke warm water.

Next day, fill a bowl with warm water, just comfortable enough to keep your hands in for a while and add 7 or 8 spoon of olive/sunfloweroil. After soaking your hands in the water/oil mix, take out your hands, put a few drops of oil on your hands and put warm clean cotton socks over your hands. Leave the socks as long as possible, preferably all night.

If you have callused hand, try the above but scrub your hands with ungorunded salt woth oil, mix 1 spoon of both and scrub your hand (or feet) with it. After that soak your hands in water/oil mix.

  • lorilotz

vaseline slathered on my hands and covered with cotton gloves. I don’t keep the gloves on all night, but my hands are much softer in the morning.

  • huntersprize

I use Aquaphor, although not nearly as often as I should!

  • Maggie

    I love Vanicream!

  • Ally

Aquaphor is probably one of the greatest inventions ever, something I use every day to treat my dry skin! It keeps lips hydrated for hours, and then I slather some on my hands at night and put on some cotton socks to let it soak in letting your body heat help infuse it into the skin. By the morning, I gently wipe away with a hot, damp, washcloth and WHAM moisturized hands. Aloe vera gel also helps to keep skin feeling soft.

  • ElizS

vaseline works wonders and is cheap!! but don’t put it on in public!!!

  • http://profiles.google.com/mrscomfortable Lauren Lamoreaux

My girls get VERY scaly, awful crackly hands in the winter, despite our efforts of fish oil and plenty of water to help from the inside out. I FINALLY found a cream that doesn’t make their hands sting like crazy! In fact, it doesn’t sting at all! The Body Shop Olive Body Butter. The. Best. Done.

  • Blondie

My hands are always dry & scaly, I have tryed everything for years & years, nothing seem to work. I tryed CeraVe Cream–it is WONDERFUL !!!!

  • pitpat

Aquaphor did the trick when my son was younger. I have been using Avon Moisture Therapy lately.

  • Jenni

I don’t particularly like the feeling of lotion on my skin (so heavy!!), so I started using Neutrogena Sesame Body Oil. I LOVE it. It smells wonderful, and it soaks right into my skin so I don’t feel greasy.

  • littleandi3

i’m constantly using bath and body lotions and anti-bacs, they’re the best!

  • Julie

I like adding organic argan oil to my regular lotion or moisturizer. Really kicks it up a notch!

  • Amy

My son’s hands get horribly dry and cracked and the lotion that has worked the best for him is Aveeno Baby Daily Moisturizing lotion. We put it on at night with a pair of mittens and he is good for a couple of days.

  • Marebare

Drink lots of water and add a humidifier to your room at night. (Of course, I live in a dry area, so the humidifier is something of a necessity)

  • pjones5018

I put an oatmeal lotion or homemade oatmeal rub on them and wrap them in a warm towel for about 15 min. works wonders

  • h.a.

    oatmeal lotion!

  • http://www.facebook.com/margold13 Margo Sykora Goldberg

Great tip for dry lips is olive oil. Just dab a little on and spread it around. tastes good and you have it at home. Much better than Chap Stick.

  • Teresa

I have never tried a Nail spa treatment. I think that would be cool with it being natural. I use Vaseline on my feet with socks overnight. Then I use lotion on my hands & a thick cream at night to moisture them. Oil of Olay on my face, chap stick on lips. ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/BeckyBug7 Rebecca Wade

I use Jojoba oil on my face or even emu oil but it is harder to find. You can either use it by itself or a couple of drops of essential oil for a beautiful scent.

  • Leanne N.

My hands are super dry right now too, but I love using Olay In-Shower Body Lotion. You rub it on in the shower and rinse it off, and it it keeps you moisturized, warm, and gives a nice, subtle sparkle out of the shower!

  • Cindy Aiton

Thank you so much for offering such a wonderful giveaway. My skin (especially on my shins) is horribly dry during winter months. The only product I have found that keeps my skin soft and itch free is Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. I also swear by Rosebud Salve for chapped lips.

  • Zaneta

I love love love Vaseline – slather it on anything overnight and you’re good to go in the morning : )

  • Boo

Coconut oil! It works for everything: dry skin, dry hair, dry lips, and cooking! Plus it’s good for you so no worrying about what nasty chemicals are in your lotions.

  • CourtneyB

As far as lotion goes, I haven’t been able to beat Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream. I do now work for Clarins, but I loved it before. It also lasts through handwashings, so no getting dried out again after washing. Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is super for dry spots on the body. For my lips, I use a Lush lip scrub (currently Popcorn) with jojoba oil, followed by Clarins HydraQuench lip balm. I’m all sinusy right now, therfore breathing through my mouth a lot, so I’m paying extra special attention to my lips.

  • Rebecca

Bag Balm is the BOMB in that little green cube! Slather it on feet and cover with those colorful fluffy socks (I call them “bed socks” cause they’re the warmest) for a perfect overnight conditioning. Great to use on hands (I’m a massage therapist) and its the fastest cure for chapped lips I’ve ever found (and I’m 50).

  • Rene Kratz

Bath and Body Works makes a hand cream (in their True Blue spa line) that contains paraffin. It’s really good. There’s also a scrub. If you do the scrub and then use the lotion, your hands feel wonderful!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brenda.drinkard Brenda Drinkard

I’m an all natural girl and in our house, we LOVE Burt’s Bees. :D We use quite a bit of their products. We all have some sort of skin problem, mine being eczema. My fiance uses Argon Oil which is amazing and I love using organic coconut oil. And if I have a zit coming on…straight lemon juice. Apply it as much as needed. My zits go away within a day or two because of this. Something else that helps with just about anything, is Lansinoh’s Lanolin. It’s pure and unless you are allergic to anything sheep, this works great on burns, chapped lips, dry hands…and of course what most people buy it for…babies! It’s fairly inexpensive, works better than Bag Balm and a little goes a long way!

  • http://www.facebook.com/daphne.blake.16 Daphne Blake

I have tried the while lotion bit, and it seems to just be a temporary solution, especially in the winter. I have some aloe infused socks and gloves, they work well. I also have a paraffin wax machine and it works wonders! My quick solution if I’m being lazy is to use lotion then regular sticks and gloves. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/daphne.blake.16 Daphne Blake

      Or regular socks and gloves*

  • carol

I have tried a wide variety of lotions without complete satisfaction. I like the idea of boosting it with a vitamin e capsule. What I finds helps is to take capsule of fish oil at least every other day. Also vaseline on the feet at bedtime helps.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rachael-Clayson-Robertson/193302211 Rachael Clayson-Robertson

My worst dry skin is on my face, and I’ve recently started using coconut oil instead of lotions or whatever. The first few days I felt SUPER greasy, but it quickly balanced out (and I’ve learned how much I need), and it seems to actually be close to the magic Pinterest and the rest of the internets would have us believe it is. My face feels and looks a lot better.

  • Allison

I have come to LOVE coconut oil! It is so great for soft skin every morning after lathering it on my face the night before. I also love a lotion I make that is the consistency of frosting. It is so simply- stearic acid, baking soda, water, and coconut oil. And I’d love to win the giveaway!

  • KK

My grandmother gave me a tube of Nutrogena’s Norwegian formula for my super duper dry hands. Now that we are barely out of the teens here, my face has felt the ill effects of the terrible dry air. I never bothered to read that it can be used on the face too, an exceptionally pleasant surprise as I had run out of my Clinque!!! Now I use it as a super moisture boost for my face, but still use it on my hands with cotton gloves every night. Bliss!

  • http://www.stitchesandsnps.blogspot.com EllenQ

I read recently that all the exfoliation you need is a not-super soft towel. With that in mind, after my Sunday morning swim, I spend 15 minutes in the steam room and rub down with a crummy gym towel. Follow with Dove body wash and my skin is happy!

  • pat

love neutrogena hand cream and vaseline with socks for dry feet but would love to win this the warmth would feel great on my hands and feet,

  • bobbie c

I love to exfoliate my dry skin with baking soda, table salt, and make a paste from it.

  • Jacqueline

ALWAYS use moisturizer (I now use Arbonne Daily Creme in the a.m. and Neutrogena in the p.m.). Drinks lots of water. Face mask weekly.

    Love the blog!

  • cpeck09

My feet get super dry and crack. Because of this I always keep a tub of Aquafor in my bedside table. I rub aquafor on my feet and put a pair of super soft socks on. A few hours later I take the socks off. If my feet were really bad I will do again right before bed and when I wake up in the morning my feet are pretty much healed and the dryness is gone. Aquafor also rids my arms and especially my elbows of dry skin after just one time rubbing it in. Aquafor is my miracle treatment.

  • Stephanie

I use the True blue Spa one minute manicure scrub and paraffin lotion from Bath and Body Works. I have super dry skin too(to the point where it cracks) but this stuff seems to be helping.

  • Jesica

When my feet get really dry during the winter, I slather them in Bag Balm and then put socks on. I wear it to sleep at night and my feet are nice and soft in the morning.

  • Julie

As others have said, Vaseline is awesome. If you already have some cracks, it doesn’t burn like lotion does. Thanks for the fun blog, M! ^^

  • Heather

I just started giving myself homemade mani/pedis! I make a scrub with sugar, extra virgin olive oil and baking soda. It really exfoliates the dry skin and moisturizes too!

  • http://www.facebook.com/heidilucilleungureanu Heidi Lucille Ungureanu

One of the things I like to use is Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Lotion! :D Thanks for all your wonderful posts!

  • KarlyAnn

I use CeraVe. My dermatologist told me that in the cold months, only use jar lotion, it’s creamier and it stays on your skin until absorbed. I love it!

  • Saige

I rub a 50/50 concoction of coconut oil & olive oil on my feet and them put them in socks. I also rub it into my cuticles each night. Smells great and makes them sooo soft. Warning: Walking on hardwood floors without socks will most likely result in injury.

  • Sarah W.

I use Coconut Oil. It does wonders for your skin! I use it for a lot of other things too.

  • Vanessa

Grab a dollop of coconut oil and a tablespoon of brown sugar or sea salt. Massage hands and feet with it and then rinse thoroughly. You’ll have the smoothest, softest hands around. Yay!

  • Jeb

I use Aloe, good for the skin and doesn’t sting on cracked skin.

  • Ariana A.

I’m going to have to jump on the coconut oil bandwagon. That stuff does wonders for my skin! Not to mention the many other great uses it has.

  • Debi A

I make a great all-natural healing lotion & a salve. For good generic moisurizing, castor oil grapeseed oil (it has 3 times the vitamin e of olive oil) & coconut oil. Castor oil’s good for hair too.

  • Katie

When my feet get really dry I like to use Vaseline. Smear on a thin coat, pull on some comfy socks and go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, presto! Soft feet!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1100162888 Karen Schedin

I know this is going to sound weird but I always use vegetable oil right after I get out of the shower when my skin is damp. It has worked for years!
