Wednesday Remake

Jan 22, 2013 | 28 Comments

So remember when I was freezing cold last week,  in my poorly heated apartment, when Los Angeles was having “Arctic Temps” (per our  newscasters)?  Yeah well that was exactly a week ago and today it’s 80 degrees out.  (PS, I’m not complaining.)  With that, I need to dress for the weather, so I’m going with this lovely little number.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Too Big

BEFORE

I’m loving the oranges, greens, and reds, however I’m not loving the GAPING HOLE IN THE BACK OF THE DRESS!!  The back is completely open and that’s just not going to cut it!

That’s the back!!

Time to make this into my summer, er January outfit!!

I began by pinning down the raw edges of the gaping hole in the back of the dress.

Pinning raw edges!!

I’m going to add some buttons here to keep it closed, so I went to my stash and started to sort through it to find matching ones!

Button Party!

I went with the lovely gold ones above and ended up tacking three in place – one up top, one in the center, and one right at the bottom.

Affixed my buttons!

Once my buttons were set, I trimmed three pieces of elastic – these guys are set to go around those buttons to keep the back in place!

Trimmed elastic

I tackled the neckline next, giving it a small V…

Neck adjustment!

…took in the sides just a bit…

Pinning & taking in!

…and then sewed everything together and in place.

Sew. It. Down.

Paired with my red boots, my warm weather ensemble was complete!!

AFTER

I love my little buttoned back!!

New Back!

The beauty of this piece is that with a jacket, cardigan, tights and some gloves, this will work like a charm when it’s really cold.  (I know we’re getting some rain towards the end of the week, so maybe this will be re-worn for a rewind day sooner than I imagined!)

Summer or January?

I couldn’t help but dance in the street – yeah, I might have been pretending to be a Bunhead…a Bunhead too old for ABC Family.  I lucked out that there was street cleaning on this particular block and had space for pirouettes.

Taking it to the streets!

May the sun be out for everyone tomorrow and may the heat present itself sooner than later in most parts of the cold and snowy nation!!

Lovely but could be shorter for a more flattering length – above the knee looks great on you. :o )

    • newdressaday

Totally :) Perhaps the next wear we’ll take it shorter!!

  • Sue

So cute. Am wishing for warmer temps here. Left Phoenix over the weekend just as the Arctic temps left there only to come home to worse than Arctic temps here.

    • newdressaday

      Aww, stay warm, stay warm!!

  • Anon

I really like this–the button back, the colors. Great remake!

    • newdressaday

      Yay, thanks!

  • Cathryn

I love the back, too! Also like the elastic for the buttons. I use elastic ponytail holders to fasten buttons, too.

  • Caleisha

The neckline is very cute :) Great refashion. You’re quite inspirational.

    • newdressaday

      Thanks Caleisha!! xo

  • Tassie Hare

I’m in So Cal, also… can you BELEIVE this crazy weather…. it’s NUTS!!!! I wore shorts over the weekend!!! Anyway… your dress is great!!! I keep trying to look for outfits to remake…. I am DEFINTELY inspired by your talent!!!

    • newdressaday

It’s INSANE!!! Supposed to rain this weekend, so let’s enjoy it while we cane Tassie :)

  • Sarah_H.

Cute dress! Do you think fashion is going a little longer? The catalogs seem to be showing more the length of this dress rather than above the knee. We will have to adjust our eyes to the new, as always. I love your solution for the back on this.

  • Graciemh

Love, love, love the fabric and the style of the remake. Awesome look on you! I like the length for winter as it meets the boot tops! You can always shorten for summer?
Am so jealous of your 80 degrees as I sit here with

layers and layers (and leg warmers over knee socks!) in our 11 degree weather back East. Enjoy your balmy weather!

    • newdressaday

      Mmmmm leg warmers!!!

Love this, very cute. I have a practical construction question: When you do the V neck like that, how are you handling the point of the V, since you don’t appear to be adding interfacing or binding the edge? Wouldn’t you wind up with a little space of raw edge that would fray, just at the very bottom? Can’t tell from your images, and while I love the look of your new neckline, I just wondered if it will survive a wash before it starts to fray? Just asking so that I know how to tackle a similar neckline re-do! Thanks for a great blog.

And just to clarify, I’m not dissing your construction at all; it looks great! I was just curious about how you are stitching around the V to get it to lay nice and flat. Just a very tiny roll-under, I’m assuming?

  • Patrice

Shorter would be cute, but I like that you did a longer version too- some of us are a bit old for minis! Boots at 80 degrees? Phew – I;d have to be in sandals! It’s 9 degrees here currently (NH ) … Send some heat this way please!

  • joy

So cute! I love the length.

  • Kristy O

Beautiful! Really love the buttons you chose and the square neckline in the back.

  • cre8soap

I also like the color and pattern ……cute remake !

  • Sam

I bought this same fabric at JoAnn’s and made a fall skirt, a line. Looks like you rescued somebody’s UFO ( unfinished object) sewing project. Made it work!

  • Elizabeth H

I love the flowery print of the fabric and that you decided to keep the dress on the longer side. I’m always trying to find dresses that are knee length or a bit longer, but it’s almost impossible to find dresses in that length. I may just have to try and make my own.

I completely love this dress. The neckline is a perfect fit and the boldness of the print is eye-catching. Keep up the good work.

  • Laura Whitman

This dress is just perfect! I love the pattern a whole lot and the buttons were a great idea.

    xoxo,
    Laura

I like what you did with the back!

  • Lauraly

Adorable! Love the colors! And the buttons.

  • Laura Bee

Love this – how did I miss it? I have a big piece of fabric very close to these colours with a smaller print – I’m inspired to make myself a skirt or dess if there’s enough.

  • Christy

Did you use the scrap fabric to face the V neckline?
