Scene It: Side Effects

Jan 21, 2013 | 97 Comments

It’s totally movie season right now with the Golden Globes just ending (how fab did Tina Fey look??) and the Oscars right around the corner, that I’ve been on a total movie kick.  I just got a sneak peek of Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects, which I’ve been super excited to see and which also comes out on February 8th.  I am a total Soderbergh fan (Traffic is my fave), adore Rooney Mara (not only is she a super talented actor, I love her fashion sense), and was excited to see Jude Law back in action (we’ve miss you Jude).

For those of you who haven’t seen it, check out the trailer to get a little taste…

I love thrillers and suspense films, which is shocking because hearing creaks in my apartment totally freak me out, and Side Effects totally kept me on edge.  The movie delves deep in the world of psychiatry and pharmaceuticals (anti-depressants, specifically), which becomes a character in its own rite along with Law, Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Channing Tatum.  (This isn’t Magic Mike gals, however Channing rocks a suit like nobody’s business.)

Jude Law plays a psychiatrist who treats his patient (Rooney Mara) with the fictional drug Ablixa, whose commercial rivals any of the ones that we’ve seen over and over again with a long list of varying side effects.  (Those commercials always worry me because the side effects seem worse than what the pill is actually treating!)  She deals with her own sadness and depression after Tatum (who plays her husband) gets released from jail because of an insider trading mishap, and then the twists and turns and car crashes ensue.

I pat myself on the back when I can guess what happens before it actually does, so as much as I thought I was on point, I was totally off.  That’s the fun of this movie.

Also, I couldn’t help but focus on some of the wardrobe – I always find myself wanting to wear some of the costumes that the actors don!  Does that ever happen to you?  In this instance, I loved this piece Rooney wore – it was a white, sleeveless blouse with gold buttons.

While watching the film, I knew I wanted to DIY this piece and had just the right vintage blouse to start off with.

BEFORE

I began my project by removing the sleeves with a seam ripper.

Seam ripper removal time!

Once my sleeves were removed…

All gone!

…I pinned down the raw edges.

Pinned arms

Next, I stitched the arm holes down to really mimic the structure of Rooney’s piece.

Sew Time!

The white buttons were fabric covered, so instead of replacing them with gold ones (which is an alternative method), I painted over each one with Krylon’s Pale Gold Leafing Pen…

Painting those buttons!

…to give the same golden look.

All painted!

After three steps, I have a shirt that’s a DIY version of Rooney’s Side Effects one!!

AFTER

I paired my new top with jeans, however Rooney wears a white skirt along with.

Also, there’s a sweepstakes that Blogher and the film is sponsoring that will earn one lucky person a two-night trip to NY including hotel, a flight within the continental US, and a $50 movie gift card!!  Each comment left below will be entered into the main drawing if you answer the question, “why are you excited to see Side Effects.”

(*I’m not administering the contest, but each comment below will be counted towards the random drawing.)

And, if I were wearing this piece during the film, this is how I would have looked from all the twists and turns!!

New Dress A Day - Side Effects DIY

No way!! No way!!

I was totally entertained by the film and if you’re a fan of psychological thrillers then you’re going to enjoy watching everything unravel.  When I saw the trailer, I was so intrigued and couldn’t wait for the movie –  I wanted to see who’s bloody footprints were on the floor, what the pills were being used for, and why Jude Law screams, “I want my life back”, and when everything unfolded, I was thoroughly satisfied.  Not to mention, I was definitely doing a little nervous, nail-biting action from the edge of my seat.

Side Effects comes out on February 8th, and it might just be what the doctor ordered.  (Yep, had to get that pun in there.)

  • Karen Cordano

Never have seen a Rooney Mara movie and would like to see what she is about as an actress.

  • vanessa de Haan

Nice refashion! So easy. I am excited to see SideEffects because it seems smart, interesting and intense. A nice combination I imagine. Plus, Rooney Mara is amazing.

  • Cari

Love the simple remake :) I would love to see Side Effects, Soderbergh is great at surprising me.

  • Kristen

Cute refashion of a simple shirt. I would like to see the movie Side Effects, I really like movies that make you think and keep you on the edge of your seat.

  • AngelaMarie

    Are your arms not chilly?
I would like to see this movie because it is the first one in a long time that had me yelling: what the heck is going on, she looks devious, poor Jude…I need to know what happens.

  • Diana

I’d have topstitched and narrowed the placket same as the original shirt. I think that would make the entire look perfect. Not interested in the movie at all.

  • Jutta

It sounds like just the kind of movie that I would really enjoy!

  • Judy B

Movies with plot twists and surprised are my FAVORITE!

  • KiKi Thomas

I am loving the shirt but I have to admit I am not too thrilled with the way the buttons turned out. The white edges showing would have drove me nuts

  • Linda Davis Siess

I’m excited to see the movie – twists and turns would be just the thing to chase any winter blues away (no “Ablixa” for me, yipes!). Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  • Kayla

I’m excited to see Side Effects because it looks like a good movie and I love Jude Law :)

  • THE Bombshell*

….because I’ll watch anything with Tatum in it. ;)

  • JennyRose

I love Jude Law – so that’s definitely why I want to see it.

Also, I love your copy-cat remake, what a great way to revive an old blouse!

  • Monica Hill

Love Soderbergh (Any director who is ballsy enough to direct a movie about make strippers is great in my book). I love thrillers and Rooney Mara is a great actress, so it may be a great movie. I have a baby so no movie theaters for us (you’re welcome) so I can’t wait for the DVD!

  • pitpat

I enjoy a movie with twists and turns. Like those actors also.

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

Smart idea with the fabric buttons…

  • Reese

Um…hello? Jude Law + Channing Tatum? Why WOULDN’T I want to go see this movie? ;p (And of course, then I can also see the original shirt-spiration. And geek out when I see it).

  • Quinze

Interesting idea with the fabric buttons- I never would have thought of that! I would have just sewn on “brass” buttons from Jo-Anns. Wondering why you didn’t narrow the shirt’s shoulders like the one the tv character is wearing to complete the look though… It would only take 5 minutes, I think you should go for it! And I never heard of this movie, but Jude Law is great, so now I want to see it!

    • Diane

How would you narrow the shoulders? Need a tutorial!

  • Ginia Magers

I want to see Tatum in a “grown up” role versus a fluff role.

  • carol

Love the button idea! I never would have thought of painting the buttons. You’re way too clever, Marisa!

  • Kelly

I’m excited to see “Side Effects” becuase 1)Jude Law 2) I love thrillers and 3) Jude Law!

  • http://twitter.com/CharKuhtz Mrs. Charlotte Kuhtz

You are so clever!!! Can’t wait to see the movie as psycho thrillers are my fave. Jude Law doesn’t hurt the eyes either!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dina.honeycutt Dina Honeycutt

I guess I have 2 comments, then. First, non movie related. If you want a nice, easy finish on sleeve to no sleeve make-overs, bias tape can really finish off thos edges for you. Sew it to the outside of edge of the sleeve then turn it in and sew it down again on the inside, making sure all the edges are tucked inside. Easy peasy, and the bias tape has a little give to go around the curves smoothly.

Second I love thrillers! I would definitely see Side Effects.

  • Beth

Love the remake. Are you able to include step by step arm hole instructions? mine are never smooth. Movie sounds great-love psychological thrillers!

Looking forward to the film mostly because of Jude Law and Channing Tatum.

  • Kerry

I’m excited because I love suspense movies and this looks like it has some great actors in it too!

  • Diane

Very nice remake! Love the idea of painting the gold buttons – will the paint stay on after a wash? And can’t wait to see the movie!

  • MadeByTrisha

Would love to see Jude Law in a new flick!

  • jess h.

First heard of Rooney Mara from Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and now have a full-on girl-crush. Can’t wait to see her in this movie!

I’m excited to see the movie because of Channing Tatum, of course! Loved the remake!

  • Kristy O

Your great review makes me want to see Side Affects. I love an intelligent thriller that leaves you guessing till the end!

p.s. I had no idea that a gold leaf pen existed. Now that’s thrilling!

  • http://twitter.com/RebeccaTomorrow Rebecca Lane Beittel

Too many reasons for me not to see it. 2 biggies = Jude Law and Channing Tatum, of course, but I also love psychological thrillers and am the wife of a doctor….so pharmaceutical issues fascinate me.

  • Jamie

Another great remake Marisa! I love getting inspiration from movies for my wardrobe. I hope you won’t be doing too many sponsored stories though. It’s nice not to be advertised to all the time.

  • Adriana M.

I’ve seen the trailer a few times and it looks exciting because of the suspense factor. Great actors too! Loved the re-make Marisa!

  • Nickioco

I can’t wait to see Side Effects because I love Jude Law!

  • Rachel

I can’t wait to see this movie!! Suspenses are my absolute favorite, especially with this character list! Also, LOVE your DIY, absolutely adorable!!

  • tara pittan

    sounds like a good movie

  • rachel

    Your remake is so creative.
The movie sounds intense!! And fun :)

  • Christine

I am excited to see Side Effects for several reasons. First and foremost, your endorsement! I’m kind of a wimp about thrillers. I like them, but usually hesitate to watch one cuz I’m easily freaked out. However, your enthusiasm has me wanting to see it. Second, I love Jude Law. Third, I have my own reasons for wanting to see a film that deals w/ the side effects of pharmaceuticals, tho I suspect it’s probably only peripherally. And lastly, how much fun it would be to take a trip to New York! Yay!

Side note: I don’t know if it is my computer or this blog, but I’ve had difficulty commenting on here. I’m wondering if others have had a similar problem and that’s why there are so few comments these days. Something like this would normally have hundreds of comments, not tens of comments :) I really wanted to comment, so I kept coming back to it and that’s how I was finally able to put in my two cents.

I’m excited to see this because I really love psychological thrillers…and Jude Law isn’t too bad either. :)

I love love love a good thriller! Just rarely get out to see movies with a nearly 1 year old. :-)

  • chrissy

Sounds like anti-d’s are the new plot device du jour. There’s a play in the UK right now called “The Effect” about two drug-trial participants who fall in love but wonder if it’s real or all the oxytocin they’re being dosed with. I’d love to go to NYC to see this film (and catch up with my bf(internet)f, JT!

  • Sophia

Even thought I have my eyes covered half the time, I love seeing a good thriller. (cute shirt makeover too!).

  • Melre M

because I like Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film looks interesting.

I’m excited to see SIDE EFFECTS because this is reportedly the second-to-last chance to see a new Steven Soderbergh film–rumor has it that after his Liberace biopic airs in HBO, he’s retiring from directing. Soderbergh never makes the same film twice and his originality will sorely be missed in the film world.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aflorez Aimee Clum Flórez

This is one of my favorite make-overs of yours. Movie looks great as well!

You didn’t get any pen marks on the shirt! Did you put something behind the buttons, or did you just “do” it knowing you wouldn’t touch the shirt? Love the sleeveless look.

  • eugeniewu@gmail.com

    I like seeing suspense thrillers.

  • mypart912

    The wardrobe does look FAB!

  • Lindsey @ I Run in Heels

I’m excited to see “Side Effects” because (1) who doesn’t love being kept on the edge of their seat by a good thriller, and (2) Channing Tatum on the big screen is always worth the ticket price.
