Tina’s NDAD Creation

Jan 19, 2013 | 14 Comments

I have my cooking club coming up in a week (it’s Valentine’s Day themed and if you have any fun ideas, leave them in the comments below!!)  Tina’s piece totally tied in to my recipe gathering.  Check it out!

I was introduced to you site about a year and half ago by my dear friend Kelly. I have been collecting re-makeables ever since, but by far this is my favorite. I found this wonderful mushroom fabric and just had to buy the remaining 2 1/2 yards of it.  I collect mushrooms, so for a total cost of about $4.00, I bought fabric without any idea of what I was going to do with it.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Upcycled Apron

Supplies!

I was getting ready to bake and when I reach for my apron, the light bulb went off!

What did the light bulb say, Tina??  (Couldn’t resist…)

I took my fabric and made a mushroom out of it!  I used a small piece of brown flannel from my stash for the stem, then made a “waist band” and stitched that in place after inserting a red washcloth (which I stole from my linen closet) to be the area used to wipe my hands on.

Deee-lish!!!

I am so excited to combine two of my loves; mushrooms and cooking!

Apron time!

And, PS, what an awesome kitchen you have to cook in!!  I dream about the day when I have enough counter space to properly prepare and lay out all my bowls and ingredients, instead of doing things individually based on the amount of room I have.

I just ate a delicious mushroom gnocchi tonight and this apron goes hand in hand.  Love this Tina – you look adorable.  Having a cute apron to wear makes cooking just that much better!!

Adorable! And I love the idea of having a washcloth to wipe your hands on! I always look at cute aprons, but never get them because my apron gets so filthy. How about cheesecake stuffed strawberries for your Valentine’s Day themed food, Marisa? I saw them on Pinterest the other day and haven’t stopped thinking about them

  • Cathryn

I agree, the washcloth is a terrific idea! And your pic eating a cookie is very Marisa-esque. Thanks for sharing!

  • Keenzi

So cute and clever–I am gonna use that washcloth idea, thanks!

Great apron! And how about those fabulous mushroom canisters in the background…. What a find!! Garage sale?

    • Paula

I don’t know where she got hers but my mom did ceramics and she made a set of those a number of years ago. In the pic they jumped right out at me. Good memories of my mom.

    • Tina

i did purchase the canisters at a yard sale. I have some from my Grandmother (I inherited her mushroom collection when she pasted in 2000), but I can’t bring myself to use them. I have her canisters along with about 200 other Mushroom pieces on shelves all around the house.

Love the material! Love your creative ideas (making the mushroom and the waistband, especially)! I collect fish, and someone gave me a nice big piece of fish material years ago. I’ve already made a sewing machine cover and a pin cushion. My next plan, for which I’ve already cut out the pieces, is a–guess what?–APRON! But now th at I’ve seen this, I’m going to add a fish-shaped decoration to it, too.

I remember reading somewhere that your only slowed using a limited number of ingredients when you do you cooking club. If I totally made that up in my head I apologize. But you could make a chocolate raspberry mouse in a chocolate bowl. Really easy to make AND only uses four or five ingredients and totally edible

after cleaning lightly brush large portabello mushroom caps with olive oil and sprinkle with the same seasonings you’d use on a steak or a burger, grill a few minutes on each side about a med/med hi heat… serve like a ‘normal’ burger mmmmm

I have been thinking about making an apron and LOOOOVE the washcloth Idea, I always get muck all over my aprons and stain them haha

  • Ana

I sew a button on the waistband of my aprons, then make a button hole on washcloths. That way I can use the washcloth and remove it to wash separately or replace when it gets too stained!

That fabric is adorable. And I loved how you made a mushroom out of it. The whole apron is just fantastic.

I am just really curious as to what she is cooking that appears to use mayonnaise and Rolos as ingredients! Adorable apron as well.

    • Tina

I was making oatmeal banana cookies. The Rolos were put there by my 9 yr old while he snapped the picture and the mayonnaise is actually an empty Parm Cheese container that is holding plastic bags that got left on the counter.
