Monday Remake!

When I laid eyes on this dress at the Goodwill in NC, I knew I had to take it home!  I loved the fabric, the bold coloring…

BEFORE

…and especially the black piped accents up top…

Piping love!

…however the piece was just unflattering.  The waist was too big…

No shape!!

…and the length was less than stellar, however I saw the potential in this piece!  Time to get this dress on the hot list!!

I began with the waist.  There was elastic in there already and when I opened the seam to reveal it…

Remove that elastic!!

…it was old, gross, and crumbling at the touch.  I decided to get rid of it all and pulled out the entire bit of elastic that was there.

Disintegrating in my hands!!

I called in for replacements!

Replacement elastic, here for duty!!

I measured my waist with the elastic, pinned one end of it down to the right edge of the waist’s seam to hold it in place, and then guided the other end of the elastic with a safety pin through the space.

Weaving through with a safety pin!

Once new elastic was put through, I trimmed the piece…

Trim Time Taylor!

…pinned the edges to prep for a new hem…

Pinned Hem!

…and then sewed my hem and waist elastic in place!  I also removed the shoulder pads after trying the dress on in the finished stage.  It was a last minute decision because they weren’t overly large, but gave a bit more height than I wanted!

Closing up shop!

With a little tightening and shortening, I think I have another favorite to add to my list!!

AFTER

I must say, changing out the elastic did wonders!!

Love the new shape!

I just love the bold color of the dress paired with the scattered/imperfect polka dots.  The pink and black combo is aces!!

This could be one of my new favorite pieces!

I can’t wait to wear this one again!!

    OH, it’s unbelievable! :-)

  • Paula

Glad you left the neckline as it was my favorite part of this piece. Another stellar redo.

    • newdressaday

Right? The neckline is my favorite part!

  • Amanda Davis

Super cute one! This looks so great on you! I love pink on redheads!

    • newdressaday

      Yay for pink and redheads!!

  • Marie Roxanne

I like the neckline too! Glad you kept it. I suppose we all have to watch out for old crumbling elastic bands in used clothing and possibly remove and/or replace them. Good lesson!

  • Diane

Do you ever have to re-do the sleeve/shoulder area to make it fit on a too-large piece once you remove the shoulder pads? I would love a tutorial on that! Oh and the dress is now super cute!

  • lilou

The dress is great. Your hair is angelically magnificent!

    • newdressaday

Your compliment is outstanding! You made my day lilou :)

Amazing what the change in length did to this dress! Have you ever looked at a sewing pattern out of the 80′s and thought what a small tweak would do to it? Sometimes it doesn’t take much. And the older sewing patterns are better made than the ones today.

This is so cute! Can’t wait to see how else you style it. :)

I might be too 80′s because I kept thinking “Big Black Belt.” If old elastic isn’t too too crumbly, the new elastic can be tacked to the old so when the old is pulled out, the new slides right in its place. Untack old and new, then stitch new to new.

Very subtle makeover, but the subtle changes make enough of a difference. I noticed that the site keeps crashing lately. Hopefully all the quirks get worked out.

    • Nina

      Mine was crashing, too.

  • Lauraly

This is one of my favs!

Love it! Love it! Love it!

  • Ann Shettles

I totally love this. The neckline is great and I like Sam’s idea for replacing the elastic.

  • TracyK

I just have to tell you I LOVE your remakes! You’re so inspiring and everytime I see your work it makes me want to redo or create my own! I have a sewing machine and used to know how to sew when I was much younger. Any tips on how I can get back into it?

  • Lara

Awesome redo and your hair really does look AMAZING!

  • Janet D

Thought for sure the sleeves were a goner…but you continue to surprise!

  • jennyshain

Great job! I’m thinking a little or big black belt would be perfect!

  • Caitlin @ Chasing Cait

Great neckline already on the dress! Nice work! I’ve recommended your blog to a few of my friends to read too!
