Sourced From NC Week: 12/31

Dec 30, 2012 | 18 Comments

Today’s piece begins the week of outfits procured from NC, while I’ve been in town!  I’ve gotten a bit of vintage shopping done (hello, Goodwill) and I’ve found some winners.  Like this one today…

New Dress A Day - Upcycled Wardrobe - Vintage Dress - DIY

BEFORE

It’s got a cute floral print, but the length is less than dreamy.  This piece was just whatever in my book.  The photo is totally capturing said “it’s whatever” look…

Ehhh

I was ready to make one maje adjustment to get this piece rocking and rolling!!

I got to cutting!  I trimmed off about five inches from the bottom of the piece.

Easy, breezy!

This dress had a lining underneath, so once I was all cut, I pinned the lining hem…

Lining, hemmed!

…and then pinned the actual fabric…

Outer layer, hemmed!

…and stitched everything in place!!

I think the pinning took the most amount of time!!

To bring out the red in the pattern, I paired the new top with my red boots and was ready for the day!

AFTER

I feel like I should be on a farm!!  (PS, that’s always been a dream, to hang on a farm for a bit and tend to the animals/produce!!)

ECU!!

I really love this top – the buttons, the 3/4 length of the sleeves, and now the new shorter length!  I didn’t leave the house like this…I did wear a cardi on top, but for picture purposes, I went sans sweater.  I did keep the knit gloves nearby, though.

Gloves!!

I’m already thinking of the other ways to style this when I get back to my full closet!  A fun colored vest on top.  A plaid wool skirt.  This might be re-worn and shot again when I get back to LA because the wheels are a-turnin!

Also…today will be the last day to complete your forms to get a copy of my sewing playlist (from the book!) and be entered to win crafty goodies for any books purchased between 11/22 and 12/31 (tonight) at 11:59pm!!  If you gave these as holiday gifts, get a lit

Head over here – www.newdressaday.com/book – and fill out all your info!  A winner will be announced on 1/2 and playlists will go out 1/5!

When I fist saw this piece, I immediately thought “nightgown” I like the way you made it into a shirt!

    • newdressaday

Ha, yes – totally nightgown. My mom liked it how it was :)

    Looks good.

much improved–no longer whatever at all!

  • Susan

Amazing job, as always! I just want to tell you that you’ve inspired me to buy a sewing machine, which is on its way right now. This is a big deal to me because I was supposed to learn sewing in 7th grade, which was cough cough let’s say a long time ago, and decided “never again.” But I’m eager to try again, thanks to your wonderful artistry & also Project Runway! Thank you so much for a very refreshing blog. I’m reading from the beginning and loving it!

    • newdressaday

Please send me pictures of what you create – I’m thrilled that your sewing machine is en route :) Happy Holidays Susan!! xo

I thought “nightgown”, too – love the shirt! So cute with jeans and the red boots.

  • Laura Whitman

Such a cute transformation! Can’t wait to see what 2013 brings you!

OK I like it the new length….that length and that dress did not go together. But take another look at the before picture. That just above the knee look would be great in a different kind of top on you. It has an Indian vibe going…I can see that length looking really good.

    • newdressaday

Yes, totally, that right above the knee length could have been fab too!

  • Alexia

So, I’m deeply confused…you said you only trimmed 5 inches off the bottom but somehow it went from being just above your knee to just below your waist. Even allowing for hemming it doesn’t seem possible to have it be that much shorter after such minimal trimming. Did I miss a step?

Nice remake, Marisa. You can come help us on our little homestead farm anytime! Sheep, chickens, alpacas…. And right now, lots of snow!

    • newdressaday

YES!! Let me know when I can be dropped off :)

If you find yourself near Sandpoint, Idaho, zap us an email. Raven Call Farm is up in the mountains outside of town.

  • Leanne

    Perfectly simple.

  • Aparna

Cute redo! The before is a kurta (Indian outfit) . It is teamed with leggings and a stole

  • Emily_Joyce

I love the top with the boots! Very cute.

  • Lovestosew

It’s a cute top. A skinny belt or something at the waist would have really set it off. I love it, though. And would wear it in a second.
