Sick Day :(

Dec 20, 2012 | 35 Comments

Greetings from the couch, friends!  So my sneezing and sniffles have turned into a full blown cold.  The sneezing stopped today but the sniffles and aches continued.  I’m not feeling terrible, but I’m not feeling awesome either :)

I didn’t leave the house today, however my family got to see The Hobbit.  I mean, check me out…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Sick Day

Sick Day!

I’ve been drinking lots of tea, had chicken noodle soup, and have been pumping myself full of vitamins.  Hoping after a good night’s sleep, I’ll be back in action.  Fingers crossed.

Do you guys have any great home remedies to share?  I’ll take ‘em!

New post tomorrow though…have some holiday ornaments to complete and share!!

taking shots of vinegar is supposed to help speed up cold recovery. My sister who just got through with chemo takes shots of vinegar when she feels something coming on and she hasn’t gotten sick yet (even with no immune system left after the chemo).

  • Sassy

I have two: one is Cold-eze, although you probably should have started it already. The other is my Dad’s standby: hot tea with lemon, honey and brandy. In a pinch it works without the honey, lemon and/or tea.

    • newdressaday

      :) Love that idea Sassy!!

  • Marie Roxanne

No matter how awful you look, always put on some lipstick, it’ll lift your spirits up! Hope you feel better!

    • newdressaday

      Preach!!

  • Dee

I just read that a teaspoon of honey mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon will help kick a cold because honey and cinnamon are antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. Hope you feel better soon!

This is WEIRD, but it WORKS. Take an eyedropper full of hydrogen peroxide, tip your head to the side, and drop the peroxide in your ear and let it sit there and bubble up for 10 minutes. Repeat on the other side, then take 2 advil. It clears out your sinuses from the opposite ends, reduces inflammation (the largest source of discomfort from respiratory viruses and infections), and kills the germs in your ears which are surprising germ-farms. I noticed a marked improvement. Also, stick your face in any source of steam possible for as many minutes a day as you can stand it. Whether it’s a hot toddy (Bourbon+hot water+honey+lemon), chicken soup, a hot shower or even just making a steam tent with a damp handtowel, it works and has an added skin-brightening effect. Finally, keep up your daily getting-dressed-and-cleaned routine. Even if you just get right back on the couch, it makes you feel better. Feel better!

My Dad always put me in a hot batch (lobster skin when done, LOL) a flannel nightie and tucked me under lots of covers. I was always better the next day. Also my Gramma always swore by white grape juice. I do use both of them to this day. Feel better soon! Hugs

  • Amanda Davis

oh no! Feel better & here is a (((((HUG))))

My home remedy is Echinacea ~ an herb that will help you heal faster. And lots and lots of water & hot tea! (oh and doggie kisses if you have access!)

    Good luck to you!

  • Nakia

Emer-gen-C Vitamin C powders (great when mixed with hot water) to boost your immune system & an enema to flush your system.

  • Elena S.

I have a cold right now. The moment I felt my throat getting scratchy I started taking echinacea & grape seed extract. I feel good, just have a stuffy nose. I got the Rite-Aid generic brand, the GNC brand is crazy expensive! There’s some great remedies here! I think I’m gonna try the peroxide/Advil. Feel better soon Marisa!

I just had a cold last week- and I kicked it with 1 Tablespoon warm Honey, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Mixed together- and take 1 teaspoon at a time- as many times a day as you’d like- I took mine in the am, at noon, in the afternoon about 5 and then again at night before I went to bed, and my cold was gone in 2 days- My husband who won’t do it- is still sick with the same cold!

    • newdressaday

No way!! That’s amazing – hope your hubby is back on track now!

  • Maureen

No home remedies, but get some Alka-Seltzer cold Orange Zest! Knocks out every cold I have in a jiffy!

I have to say, I’m glad you didn’t bedazzle your sick-blanket or tissue box and just took the day off to heal, heh. But I wouldn’t put it past ya!

    • newdressaday

Ha!! I’m thinking maybe I should do one in advance now…bedazzed tissue boxes are right up my alley!

Chicken soup — time honored and effective! Ginger tea. At the first “scratch” I also take some Air-Borne . . . developed by a teacher, so I trust it. Hope you are better soon.

  • Laura Whitman

  • angels_envy

i know it might sound crazy but i always eat as much pineapple as possible. drink pineapple juice, eat pineapple canned, whatever you can. i spend a day eating pineapple and then the next day i feel better

  • Marri

Me too — and I haven’t even left SoCal for the cold, harsh climate of Vermont yet. :( To top it all off I’m pregnant, so no medications or herbal remedies for me — I just have to suck it up. I second the hot water with lemon, and I’m taking a LOT of raw garlic to try and boost my immune system, which seems to be helping keep things at bay; otherwise I’m just sleeping as much as I can… g/l!

    • newdressaday

Hope you feel better before you get to VT Marri!!

    • Sassy

Good luck! If I had tried raw garlic when pregnant, I would probably still be burping (and the youngest just started college) — I envy your ability to still process it!

  • anna

Watch the LOTR trilogy in preparation for the Hobbit (when you’re better)…oh, and plenty of sleep.

  • LinB

Aspirin for the aches and pains. Vitamin C in megadoses to alleviate congestion and sniffles, which also alleviates coughs, because that crunk isn’t draining down your throat anymore. Honey & lemon or molasses & vinegar, mixed in equal parts, then sipped slowly, to temporarily alleviate sore throat. Feel better soon, sweetie. It must have been your turn to be The Sick One this Christmas.

  • L

Echinacea, Emergen-C and a neti pot. Hope you’re better in no time!!

  • Terri

Brunswick Stew! It’ll cure anything especially with some tabasco. If you’re in North Carolina right now I’m sure you can get some. :) Love you, get well.

  • Helena A.

Hi Marissa! So sad that you’re sick… :(
I was going to tell you, what Sassy told you: “hot tea with lemon, honey and brandy”. Seems like that recipe is international! ;)
Get well soon, because Christmas is coming in a few days!
    Kisses from Portugal!

  • brenda

perhaps you would have been happier watching the repeat Marie with your segment on it to day……..

  • H

Emergen-C. I always drink packs and packs of it when I am sick. It seems to help.

  • mrsscubafish

Sassy has cornered the answer that seems universal. It does a lot of good. Don’t forget the non caffienated and non alcoholic drinks to keep your hydration up. also salt water gargles (1 tbls per 8 oz warm water) every few hours and letting butterscotch hard candies dissolve in your mouth (don’t fall asleep or you could choke). The high sugar helps soothe your achey throat and kill germs. The salt also kills germs and offers soothing action. If that fails, hot chicken corn noodle soup, preferably made by a grandma. the heat opens up nasal passages, you get something great to eat and the grandma is a comforting person. She doesn’t have to be your grandma.

    • newdressaday

I went to TOWN on the soup!!

  • Cyndi

sleep … salt water gargle …sleep … drink fluids … sleep … neti pot … sleep, fluids … sleep, fluids … sleep!

    • Cathryn

I agree, Cyndi. Sleep and fluids!
