Holiday Week: Gold Lamé Remake

Dec 18, 2012 | 28 Comments

Behold, my first thrifted purchase in Charlotte!!  This FAH-bulous gold jacket…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Jacket

Gold Lamé – Before

The fun shirt underneath isn’t attached to the jacket, FYI :)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Big. Puffy. Sleeves.

Big. Puffy. Sleeves.

Shoulder pads, a black satin panel keeping each side together, and did I mention shoulder pads??

I got crackin’ immediately on this piece!!  I began by removing that black panel that kept each side together.  With a seam ripper, I started to unhinge the panel.

Unhinge that piece!

I was almost there!  I had to be super careful because the panel, on one side, was stitched to the gold lamé and I didn’t want any holes in the metallic fabric.

Later weird satin patch!

With the panel gone…

…I took to the sleeves!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Soon-to-be-sleeveless!!

Soon-to-be-Sleeveless!!

With more careful seam ripping, I got both of those arms off.

I pinned down the raw edges around the sleeves…

…and then got to stitching!  I sewed the armholes as well as the patch of metallic fabric that was unstitched when the panel came off.

Sew Time!

Using a rhinestone brooch to clasp the waist and wearing a camisole underneath (unforch my packed pickings were slim, however I thought the grey worked out well to match the pearlized brooch), my new jacket-turned-vest/shirt was complete!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Upcycled Vest

Gold Lamé – After

I love how chic it is!!  This is something that would pair awesomely well over a strapless cocktail dress, some jeans, a pencil skirt…the options are really endless.  (We’ll see this styled another way soon!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Gold Jacket

Sleeveless solely for the shot!! (Jacket is conveniently on the ground!)

It’s fitting for the holidays, because of the metallic nature, however it’s also going to rock the rest of the year!!

So cute! Also, I’m super jealous that you can wear that without a jacket right now!

    • newdressaday

Well, it was worn inside for most of the evening :) Jacket was on aside from these pics!!

  • Marie Roxanne

I love it! It’s really something you could use anytime of the year because you rock it very well!

  • Dee

Wow, I wasn’t sure there was any redeeming value in that lame` jacket, but you made it totally cute! I love the brooch!

  • Carole in Vermont

Awesome vest! But, OMG, that cool shirt in the 1st two shots??? I need me one of those bad boys!

    • newdressaday

Girl…that shirt is my favorite! $1, hits me below my waist which I love, and is totally flowy. I have an outfit post coming up soon featuring it!!

  • Libby

That would be way cute for New Years with the sequin mini skirts going around. ;)

    • newdressaday

  • Aparna

Jacket turned out cute! Love love the bag.. is that thrifted as well?

    • newdressaday

YES!! I’ll wear it proud later in the week. Another thrifted find here in CLT!!

  • Judy B

Vest is cute, LOVE the brooch, but . . . the original jacket!! What I can’t figure out is, did you actually have to pull it on over your head (because of the panel)? Seems awkward, to say the least.

    • newdressaday

There were clear snaps on one side of the panel attaching it to the other :)

  • Dianerz

Wow, this could have gone very wrong but it turned out great and fits you nicely! Nice work. Plus it looks awesome with the grey camisole. Impressive transformation.

  • Sarah_H.

One of my absolute favorites! And I can’t wait to see the accessories you manage out of the leftover sleeves. Hairpeice? Fabric jewelry? Clutch? ….You will probably think up something totally different.

    • newdressaday

Oh, I’m already working on something Sarah :)

  • kissem37

Vest was the first thing I thought, too! Looks great, and I love the idea of using it for a new years ensemble.

    Looks great!

You take the sholder pads out of everything. Sometimes, I think that that is a mistake. However, in this case, you did the right thing.

I’ve never doubted your radness but seriously? Making god lame look cool? You’ve taken things to a new level!
