Thank Goodwill It’s Friday!

So here’s what I looked like on Wednesday evening after the book party got called off because of the weather!  I did heed Mayor Bloomberg’s words by staying inside, but I had to document what was going on!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Nor'easter!

Nor’eastah!! (How I say it when I’m in NY)

Snow!!  Rain!!  Winds!!  It was totally insane how quickly the storm rolled through and of course, I wasn’t prepared with the right shoes or even the right warm coat!  I was able to borrow an umbrella though…saved me from getting completely saturated!

This is what I was going to wear to the event…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Skirt

What I was going to wear to the signing…

…a super fun, quilted skirt that I made right before I left LA.  Here were my steps…

I began by cutting off close to a foot of material from the bottom!  I was in LOVE with the quilted fabric and can’t wait to reuse.  I’m thinking covering a clutch or making a kindle case?

New Dress A Day - DIY - Cut Short!

Cut Shorter!!

I was left with this piece that belongs in a doggie bag…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Pinned!

The excess!!

…and then pinned the new hem in place!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Pinned!

Pinned and ready to go!!

I stitched down the edges and had a brand new skirt ready for a party that didn’t take place.  It worked out for the best because I would have been worried the whole night about safety!!  Didn’t want people to be in harm’s way at all, so we’ll just reschedule!

I did head to Boston this afternoon and upon arriving realized the clothes that I brought just weren’t going to work without a few more layers included.  I made a trip to one of my favorite places…Goodwill!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Bags of Goodwilling!

Bags of Goodwilling!!

I’m putting together full outfits from my Goodwill score to keep me warm during these cold temperatures this weekend!  Sweaters, check!  A wool coat for $8, check!  Jeans, because I only brought dresses with me from NY to Boston, check!

I’m hoping to see all my Boston and Boston-adj friends out at the event this Saturday night!  Decorations are getting put together as we speak and it’s going to be a very fun time!!

    That skirt looks cozy. :)

Stay warm and have a blast.

    • newdressaday

Oh, thanks Sue! Trying to stay as warm as possible!!

  • Paula

Had a long quilted skirt like that one year for Christmas (in fact my Mom, sister and two nieces also had the same skirt) Hey it was a family thing…LOL. It was 1972 so that might be a pretty vintage peice..

    • newdressaday

Ooh, amazing! Did it have a fun holiday print? Would love to see!

That’s a skirt? It looks like the shirt and skirt are attached so it looked like a dress to me. I like it!

    • newdressaday

Long sleeved black T! Easy to pair with a T, blouse, tank… Options are endless!

  • Mrs Polly Rogers

Love this adorable skirt! How clever you are!! I see a ton of thrift store robes that might be perfect for this. Can’t wait to make my own. Thanks so much! I’m a fan! :)

Bay Shore! I should have known such a practical lady came from the Great Sandbar! I’m from CI & Hauppauge!! And now I’m in MA. Can’t make the Boston book signing – bummer! Have a blast. Love the blog!! Clothing scares me (I’m a quilter & do window treatments) but I could try the Goodwill thing – got a good one nearby in Manchester, NH. Have a great tour!

super cute! when are you coming to the washington dc or baltimore areas?

    • newdressaday

I’m going to have more time in the new year to hit up cities that I couldn’t make in Nov/Dec. I LOVE DC and will definitely be back!!

I really wanted to come down from New Hampshire to meet you in Boston, but I think my 3 week old isn’t quite ready for that kind of trip just yet. Best of luck! :-)

I just had a thought. Your blog and that of Ari Cohen of Advanced Style are all about vintage, from different standpoints of course. You two should get together with some of his ladies and do a combined column one day. He also has a book that just came out. I would love to see what would happen with that.

    • newdressaday

Oh I adore him – would really be amazing!

  • Dawn

I love the fabric on that skirt! So pretty. I remember when those long quilted skirts were popular : ) Very cute outfit. I missed you in L.A. but I hope to get to go to San Diego!

  • Allison Woods

Ummmm…wow–I would not have given that (whatever it was before–skirt?/) a second look, but I lovelovelove it as a skirt. It’s got a kind of housecoaty feel that I dig. Gonna have to look for something quilted the next time I hit the binz.

Dying to see what is in the GW bags. Since you’re not doing your regular thing while you are on the book tour, maybe we could have a peek? Pretty please? :)

  • Janet

The high waist and waistband give it a really modern feel.

  • julie gagen

This is one of my favorite remakes!

  • Natalie

I hope you have a great turnout tonight! Unfortunately I can’t make it. Sounds super fun!

  • anita

Yes! I hope there’s no hurricane or blizzard or tornado or…anything before your next trip to NYC. Can’t make it to LI so crossing my fingers for nice weather when you return. AZ should be less nippy for you!
