New Dress A Day - DIY - Halloween Costumes - Red Head Week

Red Head Week!!

First costume of the week:  Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) on Mad Men.

Christina Hendricks on Mad Men!

I’m a total Mad Men junkie and am obsessed with Joan and her role at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (I’m totally obsessed with Megan Draper (Jessica Paré) too, but we’ll see more of MD later on in the week!).  I brought a few photos to the salon when I got my hair ‘did and Christina Hendricks was on my hair vision board.  Did I say “hair vision board”?  Why yes, I most definitely did!

To recreate this Joan Holloway look, I’ve included a few key ingredients below to really  make this costume pop!

Joan Holloway Costume Basics!

I also snagged inspiration from this genius batch of Joan paper dolls as well…

I used a dress that a reader sent my way to make my Joan look come to life!

I parted my hair to the side and pinned it up, put on my green dress, added some red to the lips and I was ready to go!

…while throwing in a few sneak attack pictures of the ceiling that I absolutely adore.  The usher saw my photo sneaking and promptly asked me to put away my phone – I did, but not until after I got this gorge shot!

    • newdressaday

      Thank you Lucia!

  • Eveline Trap

This combo is just what I had in mind when you asked us for colouradvise the other day… Love the look!

    • newdressaday

Yes!! I saved the green to really match the red :)

  • Sue

    You look terrific. :)

  • DinaB

WOW! You look Fantastic. Way to shake things up.
You are like a fine wine, better with age. A toast to you and another terrific year!

    • newdressaday

DI-NA! Hello to your amazing comment! Making my day, girl!

  • Auntnee

Love the hair! You were meant to be a red head! Love the dress. So glad you didn’t alter it in any way…..it’s perfect as is. I love the look of the mid-late 50′s early 60′s.

    • newdressaday

No – it was just too perfect!

  • Angieschoon

You look FANTASTIC!! …I will admit I thought your hair was red to begin with but I love the new amp-ed up color! … but I have an important question: How was the show?!?!?!?

    • newdressaday

Oh, totally… My hair gal was like, your strawberry blonde hair just wants to be red! Show was amazing!

  • thedashbadger

Your red hair is simply dazzling! Good choice!

  • alcessa

Marisa, you look UNBELIEVABLY good :-) (I simply had to say it) … An additional WOW for red hair and everything that’s going to happen to you from now on …

  • Diana

Great look, but not so costume-y that it looks like a costume. It’s a great nod to the 60s..

  • Carol

Love the look…red hair is sooo you! Too bad you didn’t have a crinoline petticoat to wear under (or hoop skirt). That would’ve screamed 60s!

    • newdressaday

I know…the petticoat would have been a perfect addition.

  • daisy

    gorgeous! just gorgeous!

Did I miss where you said you got that dress? It’s fab. I won’t ever be brave enough to go brunette or red, but you look great! Don’t forget your TMNT nails next week – those were my fave!

    • newdressaday

HA! Yes, I loved those nails :) Coming up with something fun :)

  • http://foryourtastebudsonly.blogspot.com/ Roxanne

I like that dress, it looks like marble? LOL And please don’t cut your hair short….:(

The red is tres jolie! Have you tried a French Twist yet,k that would be perfect for that time period. The dress is very pretty.

    • newdressaday

I know! I’m not the best with hair…will totally try next time!

      • http://www.facebook.com/melanie.hakimipour Melanie Hakimipour

I was going to make a joke along the lines of “finally something she DOESN’T excel at!” Then I reailzed your hair always looks adorable so the joke would fall flat… lol

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

    That dress!!! *drools*

  • Ginia Magers

This is my fav. look yet! Great hair! You look beautiful!

  • Judy B

You look great! I like your natural hair color, but the deeper red is very nice, too. LOVE that dress!

  • Deborah

Fabulous costume! Here I thought you looked amazing as a blond, but look out world you are stunning as a red-head!!!

    • newdressaday

I’ve never dyed my hair before, so I just had to once!!

  • Diane2809

You look wonderful! The hair suits you and the dress is really pretty – as you said, not just for a costume!

  • Sarah_H.

The hair in a French twist would be very true to the period. And you need some crinolines under that skirt for the real costume look. Take a note from your 60′s dress pattern…That’s about three crinoline petticoats with stiff starch. (You want to wear a nylon slip under them to keep from scratching your legs bloody.)

  • kissem37

*Squeal!* That’s my dress! It fits you perfectly! I’m a bit more like Christina in the chestal area, so that zipper just wouldn’t make it all the way up- my loss, your gain! And with that red hair- swoon! Btw, I got your book over the weekend, and read it cover to cover <3 <3 <3

    • newdressaday

*Squeal* right back atcha!! PS, it makes a little appearance in that little book that you might be catching up on this weekend :) I’m in love with it… (card is in the mail to thank!)

      • kissem37

With the apron! How June Cleaver ;) Or maybe Donna Reed. Yes, definitely Donna Reed- she was way hotter!

  • Helena A.

Marisa!!!! You look AMAZING!!!! UAU!!! I just LOVE your dress!!! I want one too!!! Kisses from Portugal.

You look adorable! But you need a tight as hell wiggle dress and a gold pen around your neck to really be Joan.

    • newdressaday

I know!! The dress would have to snug like a bug to totally be Joanie.

  • Hannah

You were BORN to be a redhead. I. Love. It.

    • newdressaday

      I. Love. You. for saying that!

  • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.conley1 Rachel Conley

That red is GORGEOUS! And I am loving that dress! Super cute look!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hidesama Ren Akuma

You should TOTALLY do Amy Pond’s Kissagram outfit… er, if you’re a Whovian, that is.

  • brenda

the best transformation to a redhead yet. you look happier, glowy…

    • newdressaday

Well, well then. Guess I’m just going to have to stay a redhead!

  • Shelley

Lovely!! Loving the new hair color and of course, the dress! :)

  • Laura Whitman

This look is amazing! I love the red hair. Just like Joan. :)

    xoxo,
    Laura

  • Margo Slaby

The hair looks AMAZING! It’s definitely your color!

  • Emily_Joyce

I love your red hair! It looks amazing! And that dress is stunning!

  • http://14shadesofgrey.wordpress.com/ Salazar

You look gorgeous in that dress, but I have to say, I think it’s more of a Betty dress than a Joan dress. Joan rarely goes for a floral print and a full skirt – it’s mostly solid and almost always form-fitting for her.

  • jebandamy

    Gorgeous!

  • Tori Benick

So obsessed with Mad Men. Great outfit :)

  • {gemmifer}

You look like you were born a redhead–it’s gorgeous on you! The dress is so fabulous: the shape, the cut, and that color is perfect with your blazing locks!
