.5 Days to Go: Malibu Wedding Ensemble

Oct 16, 2012 | 32 Comments

So you guys got to see the dress that I wore to the wedding yesterday without a vision of what the before piece looked like.  Are you ready???

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - Before Shot

Wedding Dress – Before

Helloooo muumuu!!  Hello big sleeves!!  Hello big neck!!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - Hoodie too?

It’s a hoodie too?

Time to do some backtracking!!

Right away I thought strapless!  The neck was big enough to fit around my bust, however it was SO incredibly tight.  I decided to open up the neck panel…

…and add a patch of elastic to give a little more stretch.  I pinned it in place and then hit the body of the muumuu next!

New Dress A Day - DIY - muumuu - Adding Elastic

Elastic Addition!

The sleeves were long and draped, so I decided to pin them shut!  This will work for pockets or an extra little layer of drape!

New Dress A Day - DIY - muumuu - Close Up Shop

Close ‘er Up!

Once pins were in place on both sides…

New Dress A Day - DIY - muumuu - Pinning Closed the Sleeves

Pinning closed the sleeves!!

…I sewed them shut and sewed the elastic in place!

Sew it down!!

Sewing Machine Time!

With those two basic tweaks, my dress was Malibu-ready!

New Dress A Day - DIY - muumuu - After Dress

I loved the printed napkins with Rachel and Mark’s name on them…

…and I loved the Malibu location.  I actually saw stars when I left, which for those non-LAers, doesn’t really happen that often in our big city.  (I totally took them in for a bit before I left, while listening to the waves crash. It was my perfect little solo moment!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - The Wedding Setting!

Wedding Setting!

Rachel is a college friend, so the USC alums stuck together.  We even crammed in an extra seat at our table to accommodate our eight.  The seats weren’t assigned, so we were not pulling a wedding faux pas by adjusting seating arrangements!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - School Pals!

School Pals!

We all took our glamour shots by the chuppah and in front of the ocean waves…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - Under the Huppah!

Chuppah Action!

I’m kind of jealous I didn’t think of wearing a turquoise tutu??

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - Maris(s)a Sandwich

Maris(s)a Sandwich

The blushing bride…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - The Mrs.

The Mrs.

…wore her veil and her shoes…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - The Shoes!

The Wedding Shoes!

…oh, so well!

The dance party continued even after the sun went down…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Muumuu - Magic Hour

Magic Hour

…and I was smart enough to bring flip flops to change into when my gold heels started causing some serious ball of the foot pains!!  But those pains are the true telltale sign of a successful, dancy evening!

Totally Gorgeous!! I loved the material the other day when you showed samples and the after dress is amazing and so are you!. Couldn’t imagine saving that dress from the before shot but you look beautiful. Think this is my very favorite remake!

Looks like it was a very fun wedding. Congrats to the bride.

  • Anita

The before looks like an Abaya…if they make them in florals. Everyone here in Saudi wears a black Abaya and I sometimes wonder if I’m out shopping or attending a funeral.

Nice transformation! I love the bride’s gold sandals that you created for her!

  • Victoria Zhang

Wow, you are so talented. Wondering what you are going to do after 5 days.

  • Diana

I would have given up and used all that fabric for a tablecloth. Nice job!

  • Laura Whitman

You did such a great job with this piece! I am super impressed. :)

    xoxo,
    Laura

    That last picture is adorable.

  • Sam

The before surprised me a bit. I have a vintage sheet stashed with very similar colors and print. I did not realize from the teaser shots this was a poly knit type fabric. Love the print. Congrats on the book.

  • bonnie

One of my favorite pieces that you made M! Beautiful, stunning , you totally rocked it!

  • Graciemh

Although I voted for the other fabric initially, this remake is AWESOME! What a fun dress…and you look fabulous in it!
Congrats on 1/2 day to go!!

  • kissem37

Talk about working some magic, holy cow! Never would have guessed how that dress started out. Truly awesome.

  • Judy B

This gorgeous dress is one of my faves! It looks so light and flowy, yet luxurious with all that fabric. Great colors, too.

  • cONNIE

    Happy birthday!!!!!
    aunt Connie and Molly

  • Julie

What a fun, festive dress! Perfect for a beach wedding. :)

  • Shelley

    Happy birthday! Love the dress!

  • Sue

I think when I saw the before my mouth just fell open. :)

    Lovely perfect transformation.

  • AnnShettles

Love the Dress. The before was awful. The sun looks great. Living in Oregon dresses like this one are only worn in the height of summer or with a sweater.

  • carole

Un-freaking-believable transformation. I LOVE it. Gotta get me some muumuu!!!

  • margomadison

One of my favorites ~~ gorgeous and great shoes!

Thanks for a year of interesting remakes. Don’t know what I am going to do after tomorrow. Have remade a t-shirt smaller (from my husband bought in Venice), a blouse from prissy high neck to v-neck and a pair of pants into a skirt – thanks for the inspiration… from Canada!

  • Kathleen

Happy Birthday! My 10 yr old daughter celebrated hers the day before. :-) BTW, are you at that section of Zuma Beach where the houses start and the tunnel to walk across the street is nearby? My family would always set up camp on that end of the beach when I was a kid/teenager.

  • Boatgirl

Wow! I didn’t see this one at all in the before photo — and wondered what you possibly do to rescue that eyesore of a muumuu! This transformation is amazing and it looks great on you.

  • Melinda

My birthday was on the 15th too! I hope you had a lovely b-day. I look forward to seeing how you remake your clothes. Thanks for sharing.

  • Ms Helper

Happy Birthday may you be blessed with many more creative ideas and great bargains!

  • Leanne

Happy (belated) birthday Marisa! Your friend is so lucky to have you as a friend to create things for her big day! They turned out great!

  • Diane2809

The before dress looked like a shower curtain with a hood! Beautiful refashion – so flowy and pretty. What oh what are we going to do without being able to go online and follow you every day?????

  • Allison Woods

Great fabric, and really nice work. Hoping you were able to hide/cover the white elastic somehow. Such a cute dress.

MAN OH MAN I LOVE THAT FABRIC!!!!!

  • KC

OMG, the before is so Mrs. Roper! The after is beach wedding perfection.
