11 Days to Go: Cork Coasters

Oct 5, 2012 | 15 Comments

It’s a break from clothes today, yay!!

I’ve got a little project that I’m working on and needed a bunch of goodies like these for it, so today we’re doing coasters!!  Hello cork that isn’t coming out of a wine bottle I’m opening!!

Cork coasters!!

The last apartment I lived in had cork flooring in the kitchen that I was just obsessed with, and these coasters reminded me of it because of the thin, tile-y feel!  I’m not re-laying my floor if you’re wondering….still keeping them as coasters!

I love the cork look, so I’m just going to embellish what we’re starting with.  I took some Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape…

…and began to tape stripes and lines all over them!  They had a retro feel to them and I kept thinking…what would Don Draper use for his cocktails??

With my lines drawn, I took some Martha Stewart Crafts paint in a beautiful rose gold shade…

Time to Paint!

…and began to paint in most of the open, cork-exposed areas.

I finished my coasters, all with different patterns, and let them dry for a few hours.

I love the subtleness of them, while still being sleek and modern.  Giving some basic coasters a little zhuzhing!!

Now my champagne glasses have something totally appropriate to sit on!!

Stylish and easy- who could ask for more? Love those champagne flutes, too- are they handpainted?

    • newdressaday

      They’re from Target :)

looks like they’d be an easy DIY with those glass paints… hmmm… I have some boring martini glasses that might need to be spruced up ;)

Nice work! I have cork floors in my new home, my allergist recommended them. I love the soft feel underfoot, and so easy to clean!

      I miss my floors :)

I have never heard of cork floors and I am intrigued. I will have to go google them! I am remodeling a 100+ year old house and this might be great for the kitchen! I had an ankle/foot injury that makes standing on hard floor painful.

My daughter’s puppy just chewed up several of my coasters and I’m going tomorrow to look for some new ones. Now I have an idea to make some. Thanks Marisa:)

Cool idea! I always think cork coasters are so plain looking until now! Maybe I’ll go and buy some and do a little striping myself…

I love your design! So many things you could do with this idea!

Isn’t cork depleting the rainforest? Or do they have a way to get it sustainably now?

Cork comes from cork trees and is extracted every nine years. Absolutely no harm is caused to the tree. The biggest producer of cork is Portugal

Great idea! I have some cork trivets that might need this treatment…
