16 Days to Go: Laura’s NDAD Creation

Sep 30, 2012 | 22 Comments

Today’s remake comes just about six hours away from me in Arizona!  Laura likes to remake things while watching movies which is totally how I like to roll too!  (I’ve been on a Friends rerun kick as of late…)

Hi Marisa!

First of all, I LOOOOVE your blog!  Here’s the story behind my creation:  My Mom has been ruthlessly cleaning out closets in my childhood home, and she came across a box of old costumes from Halloween, plays, church events, etc… I went through the box with your inspirational website in mind, and found this piece of potential!  My mom whipped up this dress for 11 year-old me to wear for the annual Historic Home Show Tour my church had one year.  Right away I loved the fabric and the neckline, but knew I could never get away with wearing the whole dress!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Laura's Remake

Laura – Before

Let the redo begin!!

I started by removing the sleeves…

…, and re-closing the yoke (is that what it’s called??) of the neckline.

Using a shirt I liked the length of as a guide, I cut off that lovely fluffy skirt (I have plans for that, too!), stitched up the armholes, took in the sides a bit, and hemmed the bottom and I was good to go!

Lots to Sew!

Sorry for the crooked self-timer photo, and I feel it’s important to mention that I did the whole re-do while watching one of my all time favorite movies, Where the Heart Is, it seems relevant :)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Laura After

Laura – After

I had so much fun making this shirt!  Can’t wait to wear it out and about!  Thanks so much for the inspiration, motivation, and confidence to give this a try!  Laura B. (Phoenix, AZ)”

Hope you’ve been having fun in your floral top!  The fabric is so pretty and will totally translate into fall.  Add a cardi and you’re golden, not that you’ll need a cardi anytime soon in Phoenix!

How adorable and so right for the weather in Phoenix… where I have family.

The ideas just keep coming and coming- lovely remake !

  • db

But the most amazing thing is that she can still fit into something made for her when she was 11! Seriously, though – great remake

    • JanF

      YES! It is truly amazing!

    • Laura B

I was quite a LARGE 11-year-old :) I was a bit of an early bloomer – taller than all the boys! Thankfully it all evened out in high school! Haha

  • Tori Benick

This is definitely a great re-do! Great eye! :)

Great remake and I can’t get ovet that you can fit into a dress made for you when you were 11!!!!!!!!

  • J.R. Williams

Love what you did. Nice job!

  • Shrav

Lovely remake Laura but you fit into something your mom got when you were 11? Oh wow!

  • Diana

Very nice.. good job and nice fabric! Wish I felt confident enough to go sleeveless!

  • Laura Whitman

That is so super cute! I bet you still have enough fabric leftover to do something else cool!

    xoxo,
    Laura

    Very nice, light and Summery.

  • Molly

You forgot to be astounded that she fit in something she wore as an 11 year old!!! ??

  • Lauraly

Lovely summer shirt! I love the pattern too!

  • Sarah_H.

Great remake! The only downside is, I am such a packrat anyway, and all these fab remake just make me even more reluctant to toss anything!

  • Emily

I love that she was watching that particular movie because she looks very much like Natalie Portman! Cute shirt and I’m sure the other piece that comes out of the rest of the fabric will be just as adorable.

I think my mom made the exact same dress for 11-year-old me, just a different floral fabric. Too funny, nice neckline result.

I love the fact you’re getting more wear out of something your MOM made just for you! What does she think of the revision?

  • Judy B

Wow, Laura, you have a great eye just like Marisa! When I read you loved the neckline I thought, “EEEEWW! She actually LIKES that?!” But in the end, it’s beautiful! I love it, too.

  • diane2809

    Very pretty and great remake!

  • Allison Woods

Yep, totally saw that top part hiding in the dress. Very cute. I’m kind of expecting to see a little bow detail on the neckline or shoulder made from the belt. Whaddayathink?

Awesome entry, I have also turned dresses into tops. I do have a question…what does “re-close” mean?
