OK, today was all about the paisley!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress

Day 30 – Before

This dress fit me all wrong, and there were weird buttons, but I was just in love with the pattern!  For me, that was the selling point to this dress.

Check it out!

For a buck from the pile sale, I was totally sold on this vintage Liz Claiborne frock!

I began by adjusting the length!  I brought the dress up about five inches, to make it hit me right above knee level!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Pins

Pins!

The body of the dress came next.  I think because the pattern is so fun and bold, making this fit me to a T is necessary!  I took in the arms a little over an inch as well as the body.  The silver pins are tricky to see, but they marked my areas to sew!

Take in body!

I sewed my new hem and got the bones of the dress tightened up!

Sew ‘er up!

There were buttons all down the front of the dress, so instead of cutting off the weird button and retweaking the neckline with a needle, I just unbuttoned and folded in.  I can always go back and replace the button or sew down if I’m really unhappy with how this is.

Paired with a vintage elastic navy blue belt and my vintage Candies, my dress was ready for some cocktails!

Day 30 – After

OK, one cocktail :)

Mmm sips!

I didn’t go crazy…it is the beginning of the week.

My dress fits!

I got some lovely compliments and someone even said it was Pucci-esque with all the paisley.  I just think that the print is perfect for fall and I really can’t wait to pair with boots and a vest!

Fun times on the street!

I’m actually looking forward to trading in the Candies for some closed toe action soon!!  We’ll see how long it takes for fall-ish weather to hit….

Could you do a taking in arms tutorial sometime? My arm holes always seem to come out weird.

    • AmyD.

Armholes are always hard. Darn boobs always make things gap weird. I would LOVE an arm tutorial too!

And the dress? The fit is fantastic, but I gotta say you’re the one loving that print, because I’m pretty sure I could never pull that one off! :-)

I really didn’t think that could be rescued… but WOW~

I don’t know if that’s the right belt for it, but that dress is FAB otherwise :) . Hm, what about one of those metal serpentine belts?

    • newdressaday

Ooh, that would be nice! I wanted something thicker and that was the one navy piece in the collection!

  • Sarah_H.

Paisley is not Pucci, but they both are very 70′s. And the dress is gorgeous!

    • newdressaday

I think that was more of the connection :) I took the compliment graciously!

  • Keenzi

You find the best fabrics, love me some bright paisley action!

  • Laura Whitman

Great job! It is a really cute pattern!

    xoxo,
    Laura

pucci did not do paisley, whoever told you that didnt have a clue. its too bad though that it wasnt a little newer (like 2007 & on) or maybe tim gunn mightve had a hand in its design when he was claibornes cco.

    • newdressaday

Agreed :) Someone with many cocktails in him kept calling me Pucci. I think it was just because of the bold pattern!

  • Diane2809

Cute! Do you ever have to take the dress up at the waistline because the waistline is too low? I had to do this recently and it was not easy…wondered if you have some tips!

    • newdressaday

It’s not my favorite thing to do to be honest…I’ll try taking something in which ultimately moves the waistline up a bit for pieces that don’t need crazy adjusting :)

  • Meghan Elizabeth

    omg Candies have vintage? haha!
the dress looks great, I LOVE the pattern so so much.
    Emailing you soon…

    • newdressaday

  • Fran

    Love! Great job.

  • AnnShettles

That looks so awesome. I love the print.

  • Lauraly

Ok love the re-do on the dress…lovely! I also love love love the belt and the shoes, just not with this dress!

  • Lisa

Love the paisley! Looks like the Marciano dress in the HUGE September 2012 issue of Vogue-page 399. I’d put money on it that you have it!

  • Lindasews

Love anything Liz. You did good.

  • Sophia

Nice re-do. How about a gold belt to complete the vintage styles :o )

  • Renee

Yeah, I’m thinking tights/boots would be fabulous!

  • Ashley Weeks Cart

You are the cutest – and definitely reminds me of Pucci!

  • ally

    that looks sooo cute!

  • DARBY

Do you use any patterns or do you make them all up in your head??
