It’s Muumuu Monday!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Before 2 - 54

Day 54 – Before

I fell in love with this fabric – the red base with blue and green flowers and butterflies?  It’s like the print was made with me in mind!  It’s still a muumuu though…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Before - 54

Neck Drawstrings!

…and needs a bit of help before I wear :) If the dinner party I was going to was Three’s Company themed, I’d have my Mrs. Roper ensemble ready to go.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Mrs. Roper - Three's Company

Mrs. “Muumuu” Roper

Unfortunately, it is not, so I have a date with my sewing machine!

I started off cutting the piece!  I trimmed about 18 inches off from the bottom.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Length Trim - 54

Scissor Sisters!

This piece is going to be shorter now!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Leftovers - 54

Extra fabric for the stash!

I prepped the raw edge to sew a new hem by pinning it in place…

Pinned Hem!

…and then sewed it down!  The body was a bit too big, but I was loving the wider sleeves, so I took in the sleeves starting at the elbows (to maintain the thick cuff) and then tightened up the body.  I also unzipped the piece about five inches and folded the edges under to create a V shape.

A Stitch In Time

Love to hide those drawstrings now!!  With my piece finished, I added my sunnies and Urban Outfitters flats I scored at Buffalo Exchange for $12, and had a dress totally appropriate for dinner!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Street Shot - 54

Day 54 – After

I still can’t get over how fun this print is!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Fabric ECU - 54

Love this fabric!

It’s like you can’t even tell it started off as a muumuu, aside from the zipper :)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Car Shot - 54

Big cuffed sleeve!

Wearing my new ensemble, I met up with my girls Sonya Nimri and Maegan Tintari for a little dinner action.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Charlie's Angels - 54

Charlie’s Angels!

The kicker to this delish meal…some decadent sweets from Porto’s!  (PS, for those of you who aren’t Los Angelenos/familiar with this Cuban café, here’s Porto’s site to get an idea.  I LOVE this place – it’s super reasonable and the pastries/sandwiches/empanadas are simply insane!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Muumuu - Portos Mango Mousse - 54

Porto’s Mango Mousse!

I started off my day working on my Fantasy Football draft and ended it with my girlfriends.

Oh happy day!!

Best way to celebrate the close of the weekend!!  Hope everyone had a great one!

LOVE IT! I’m so glad you kept the sleeves- I saw those in the beginning and was crossing my fingers they’d stay on. I’m such a sucker for a red dress :P

    • newdressaday

It really makes you feel amazing, wearing red!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=532007777 Stephanie Tremel

I love it but it feels like it needs something small around the neck line. Could be me though

    • DinaB

I see what you mean Stephanie, maybe a bit of flowered lace about 2″ across the bottom of the V would do the trick. Sort of like the top of the jumpsuit. Love the fabric Miss M!

  • Rachel

Love that you kept the sleeves! Cute!

  • kristina allen

Cant gp wrong with cuban food!! ;-)

  • Amanda Davis

SO ADORABLE! I bought a shirt from the clearance bin at Lucky back in the spring with almost the exact same pattern! It’s one of my favorite pieces!

  • Libby

Another favorite! I love the quick simplicity of the quick flip of the muumuu. Looks way comfy too. and later in fall could be worn with tights and cute boots!

    • newdressaday

Perfect for fall! Boots are my BFF :)

  • anna puddles

that fabric is amazing, with we had mumus in the uk

  • Sarah_H.

One of my faves. I would so wear this, maybe a little shorter, with jeans. But I would wear it. It is one of those timeless pieces that any woman over 21 could put on and look great in. I can imagine the 101 year old woman I just saw on Advanced Style looking great in this.

  • diane2809

When you unzipped it and folded the edges under to create the V shape, did you leave the top part of the zipper intact? Just wondering…very cute! Would you believe I still haven’t found a muu-muu in our thrift stores here in Alabama? LOL.

  • ally

just fyi, the ad that came up in the left corner is for boudreaux’s butt paste… hahaha. anywho i like the dress! so cute! and oh man that mango mousse looks delicious!!!!!

    • newdressaday

Ha, so funny! Boudreaux’s is the best for babies and the name is a hoot!

  • Kat

LOVE IT!!! Cute and comfy. At my age I don’t wear things that short so I too would have to wear leggins or make it a little shorter to wear with jeans. Love the print. I am going muumuu shopping this week. It will be a great project to break in my new Janome machine. BTW where are you in the before pic’s? Looks like a storage rental place. Did my Fantasy Football draft last night. Go Ball Ground Kats!

    LOVE IT!
I am so happy I found your site, I often would buy pieces like this with intent to do “something” with them – but when it came down to doing it, cutting – well just seemed like sacrilege (I don’t know why), and the pieces were often re-donated. Thanks, now I know cutting, altering is really, really ok :)

    • newdressaday

      It is really, truly ok!!

  • Sonya Nimri

Loved having dinner with you last night! So yummy and such good company…

    • newdressaday

So much fun!! We should do it more often :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/MelissaSpeegle Melissa Speegle

I will totally pay for the remaining fabric. I WANT IT! And I know just what I would do with it.

  • Keenzi

Fabulous fabric, would totally snap that dress up in a store!

  • holly

really glad you kept those sleeves, the boarder print is a great detail.

  • Chris

I love it. When I saw your before picture I was thinking Jacket with jeans!.But looks great as a dress too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/vawn.clappes Vawn Clappes

Haha, Crazy thing… everyday since our 5th anniversary (Aug. 10th!) my husband and I have been watching Three’s Company on TV land!

    • newdressaday

      Ha, amazing!! So cute Vawn!

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

I can’t wear dresses quite that short anymore, but I’d definitely have loved to find a garment with that much pretty fabric! It’s actually cheaper to get fabric at the thrifts than at fabric stores O.o

  • joeys gal

when you take in sleeves and the side seams…do you unpick the seams and re-attach, or just tuck and sew? i always felt the original seams should be undone, but cant figure out how to re-attach them?! nice job.

    • Allison Woods

Keep track of which sleeve is left and which is right. Also, it helps to make a tiny snip in each sleeve at the top to match up to the shoulder seam. Use lots of pins and expect to have to do it over if you are inexperienced at doing inset sleeves. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy.

  • Parker

Great remake!! And what a shock to see Maegan from “Love, Maegan” blog! I love her ideas also.

    • newdressaday

      She’s the best!!

  • http://twitter.com/RachaelAlsbury FrugalFaye

One of my favorites so far! Great!

  • Loyal Fan

With the zipper, it would be an awesome pool coverup too. Great job as always!

  • Lovestosew

Heeheee that was Soooo Mrs. Roper wear. Your remake looks great. I’d buy it in a second.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hidesama Ren Akuma

This would be GORGEOUS with leggings in colder weather <3

I love what you did with the neck. I never thought of that.

  • Kari
