57 Days to Go: Anthropologie Copycat

Aug 24, 2012 | 72 Comments

Like last week’s Anthropologie clutch copycat (refresher here!) that I crafted with my most creative pal Sonya Nimri

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie Copycat - Finished Clutch - 64

Our Anthro-esque clutch!

…we also worked on another piece that we scoped out in Anthropologie’s most current catalog!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie Copycat

Anthropologie Copycat

We loved this lace stripe combo and found it would be easy to make with two thrifted pieces.

A – striped shirt…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Striped Shirt - 57

Stripes!

B – lace shirt…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Lace Shirt - 57

Lace!

And little side note…we’re gonna make two tops, one for each of us to don.  Ready to make a Anthro-faux-logie piece??

We layered the options to get an idea of how everything would look…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Layered Garments - 57

Layer it!

…and then we got cutting!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Trim It - 57

Snipped!

We used the Anthropologie catalog page as a guide as we trimmed.  After we trimmed the lace, we used it as a template for cutting the striped shirt and sleeves.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Puzzle Pieces - 57

Puzzle Pieces!

Once all our pieces were cut, we did a Frankenstein number on them!!  We began to restitch the top part of the lace shirt to the bottom part of the striped shirt and sleeves and the top part of the striped shirt to the bottom part of the lace shirt.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Stitched Together - 57

Call us Gene Wilder, yo!

We attached all the pieces and put our new shirts on!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat -Team Stripes Shirt - 57

Team Stripes!

Hello, how cute are these??

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Half & Half - 57

Half & Half

The Anthropologie shirt retails for $78

Anthropologie’s shirt

…and ours cost just a few bucks.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - After Shirt - 57

New Shirt Face!

Because we paired black lace with black and white stripes, we wore some melon-y red jewelry to tie in the original lace color from the Anthropologie version.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - Sonya After - 57

Model Sonya!

Oh, and those dangling threads from the striped shirt…they got a little trim.  No need to toss a piece like this when that happens!!  All you need to do is take a pair scissors and cut off the stragglers!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Anthropologie - Copycat - After Shirt 3 - 57

Wild Hair!

Two new pieces created from two old pieces.  I like the sound of this!!

Always a fun crafternoon when you’ve got a buddy in tow to throw ideas by.  We’ve got a few more projects around the bend…

Crafting takes it out of you!

Any fun projects on the horizon for the weekend??  I’ve got my fantasy football draft and couldn’t be more excited :)   Well that and a few more remakes to put finishing touches on!!

Happy Friday!

  • Sue

    So cute and very thrifty.

Only project for the weekend is to survive the humidity… indoors and out.

    • newdressaday

Good luck Sue!! I’ll be jarring the dryness here and sending your way…

  • Charity Shop Chic

Very nice! Great idea and I am glad you managed to use both halves of the lace – both pieces look fab!

  • kissem37

    Way to go, girls!

  • katier

    they both look great!

  • DB

LOVE the word “Anthro-faux-logie”. Don’t love the shirts (even the original) so much. Still a wonderful idea that I never would have thought of myself.

    • newdressaday

That’s totally cool! Everyone doesn’t always have to love the pieces! That’s the beauty of personal style :) We all have our own tastes!

  • L

    Really, really like these!

  • Paula

Was not a fan of the original but the remake is fantastic. I especially like the one with the lace on the bottom. Great remake!

  • Ali

I agree with Paula! I like your color combo better than the Anthropologie one. And I will be copying your copy cat :)

  • Elisha

Super cute! I think they would look awesome paired with red pants or a red skirt!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tollyfaye Tolly Bockbrader

Nice copycat, and I like that you made the 2nd shirt. They both are a bit 80′s Madonna to me, but in a good way! (I know when you read this you are going to smack your head and think you should have worn your Cone Bra). Cheers!

    • newdressaday

Ha! Madonna circa Blonde Ambition Tour!! Cone bra is on next time!

  • Adin Blankenship

So crafty! :) Good copycat. :)

  • Anne R

Both shirts are darling and they also look so comfy. One to keep and one to share. What a way to s-t-r-e-t-c-h those dollars!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Garrett/1163771137 Mary Garrett

I didn’t think I liked this, and then, by the last photo, I did — a very fun, cute, stylish re-make!

  • Libby

Really like this one the mostest! ;)

  • Amanda Davis

Super fun! Super love your hairdo in these pics too (and I think that your craft buddy should lend me those awesome shorts! hee hee)

:O) Your blog is a joy spot in my days Marissa! Thanks!

    • newdressaday

So sweet Amanda – have a beautiful weekend! I LOVE her shorts too, however I have a shorts phobia :) They never seem to look right on me!!

    • LT

She can keep the shorts. I’ll take her teeny tiny wasit. :)

  • JJ

I think the shirts you made are cuter than the catalog version. Well done!

  • http://twitter.com/MunchTalks Jasanna

I love your look even better than Anthro’s!! :)

    • newdressaday

      Love that Jasanna!

  • Micki

Two cute tops — and I appreciate the quality and quantity of the photos in this post!

  • http://www.facebook.com/nete.rodrigues Nete Rodrigues

    Simplesmente lindo, adorei!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brittany.a.meng Brittany Arpke Meng

    Great copy cat! Love it!!!

  • ms. mary

Super cute! These remind me of those BFF necklaces people used to wear with the two halves of one heart… two halves of two shirts :)

About the cutting off threads… was there a seam at the bottom of the striped shirt? how do you wash pieces like this? It seems like they would unravel easily.

    • newdressaday

I loved those BFF necklaces! No seam, just a straight stitch about 1/2″ from the bottom – the cotton was bound to unravel a bit, so we just gave a quick trim!

  • DinaB

Love that you cut the lace scalloped instead of straight. It added a bit of interest and worked good with the straight stripes.
I love my crafting buddies, we make some wild stuff sometimes.

  • Laura Whitman

So cute! I like that you both got a shirt out of it! Adorable. :)

    xoxo,
    Laura

  • Sarah_H.

See. I keep telling you that you out-design the designers. If you had been doing the line for Anthropoligie, they would have had the awesome double split shirts.

    • newdressaday

      You’re the best Sarah!! xo

  • Vanessa

I love your anthro inspired designs lately!!! I, like Ali, feel inspired myself and will be “copying” yours as well! Thanks!

    • newdressaday

      Yes!! Do it V!!

  • Christine

Way to cute for words!!!!!!!! One of my favorites!! I love the buddy thing going on there! Hearts!!!!

    • newdressaday

It’s so fun to have a crafting pal! Hearts right back at you Christine :)

  • Christie

awesome – fabulous, both of you! Most wonderful

  • lynette

One of my favorites!!!!! Too cute!

  • Karen Chandler

OK. Now this, is an amazing idea!

  • http://foryourtastebudsonly.blogspot.com/ Roxanne

I am loving the one with the lace black top, not so much the bottom laced one. And I think on Monday, i will be going through your whole blog!

  • Boatgirl

This is by far my favorite NDAD transformation! Who doesn’t have a gazillion old t-shirts lying around or with quick acess at a thrift store? This one was brilliant and very doable. I love both versions and you ladies look great in them!

    • newdressaday

Yay!! Seriously – take two tees of any material and do a little Edward Scissorhand action!!

  • Bev

The tops are really cute and fashionable. I think I will try that. we have a Elk’s thrift shop in town that sale all cothing for $1. I get some real finds. Thank you for the great ideas.

  • katie: normal girl

Wow! $78?! I like yours SO much better!

    • newdressaday

      Right?! Thanks gal!! xo

  • Shrav

One word…amazing! Both the tops are so so cute!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kenikohl Keni Kohl

This is one of my favorite ideas! I always love checking out your blog everyday!

  • Keenzi

A two-fer, and both so cute! This idea has my mind reviewing some old shirts in my closet. Agree with the others that you out-anthro’d Anthropologie…I see another gig in you future if they are wise! : )

  • JenniferRose

I can’t get enough of these shirts! I have looked at this post four times today (so far) soaking them up.

Is it harder to sew lace?

    • Sonya Nimri

The lace is a cinch to sew- this kind was stretchy. Used a zig-zag stitch.

      • JenniferRose

I should be getting my first sewing machine in the next week or so and I hope to try to tackle something like this is the near future. Thanks for the tip on the zig zag stitch :-)

  • Cathryn

This is so funny because my daughter has been OBSESSED with shirts with lace sleeves in her back-to-school shopping this year. On registration day, I swear, one quarter of the girls were wearing them. We spent so much time looking at them in Anthropologie, Hollister, and Aeropostle that I wanted to scream. (The music and lights in those stores must have been designed to give middle-age moms a migraine. Don’t they know we are the ones with the credit cards?) Unfortunately, I had to say “no” when I saw the price tags. Fortunately, I found a look-alike at Goodwill that my daughter loves. I agree, your creation is better than anything I saw out there. Love that last pic of you and your crafting pal—such lovely, stylin’ young women!

    • newdressaday

Yes! Can’t wait to see the version you craft with your daughter Cathryn! PS, always good to carry Advil on those mall trips.

  • Alie

I saw a girl on the street a couple days ago with a lace/shirt combo! It was like a slightly less slouchy 80′s pullover sweatshirt with the top half of the back and maybe some of the sleeve in lace. It made me think of you and I almost stopped her and asked if she read your blog! Adorable pictures too!

    • newdressaday

SO funny!! Love that you though of me Alie!

  • Nicola

better than Anthropoligie’s – both of them!

  • http://www.facebook.com/julia.peiperl Julia Peiperl

Awesome, awesome DIY! Love both the shirts. And that photoshoot was magazine-worthy :)

    • newdressaday

Woo, mag worthy is the best compliment ever Julia! xo

  • Jas

    Love love love love!!!!

  • Chris

Wow I like your creations better then Anthropologie! Very fun!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brenda.hundley Brenda Bryan Hundley

I will hit Goodwill and Salvation Army thrifts today to look for lace and stripes to make this for my granddaughter! THANKS, she will LOVE!

    • newdressaday

That’s fabulous Brenda!! Send me pictures of how the piece turns out for your granddaughter!

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

Agree — I like these better than the ones in the catalogue.

  • diane2809

Oh, very cute – gonna try this for my daughter

  • Dania

The crazy thing is that I like your version better than the original. :)

    • newdressaday

      I like that Dania!!

  • Larissa Oliveira Cândido

Legal, eu só não deixaria a parte de baixo sem acabamento.

  • Lovestosew

    Love them!

  • simply devine

I love copying jewelry from Anthropologie…they have great designs, and by picking my own beads and findings, I make it just the way I want. Great redesign here…I think I like the lace on top a bit better, but both work!

  • Becca

These might be my favorite pieces you’ve ever done! I LOVE these!

  • http://twitter.com/CharKuhtz Charlotte Kuhtz

I like your versions better than the Anthropologie one.

  • Tasmanian Minimalist

This is amazing- I love the simplicity, yet the total stylishness and fabulousness of the idea. I love this blog ! Whoah Nelly !
