Day 67 – Before

Hello Marisa,

I’ve been following your blog for about a year now.  I love it – you are so creative!  I look forward to seeing how you can transform a dated or unattractive garment into something very stylish.  The striped dress is from a thrift store – got it for 25 cents!

Not so much…

This white plastic-y, leather looking belt wasn’t working for me and the dress as a whole was feeling just a bit frumpy.  However, with some small changes, this is going to be looking faboosh!!

These very small shoulder pads got removed first.  I don’t really understand why they were there in the first place just because they were so thin!!

First order of business!!

Originally if you had asked my thoughts on the collar, I would have said that it was going to be the first thing to go!!   It’s funny how my thought process changes along the way, because I opted to keep the collar intact and remove the sleeves!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Sleeve Trim - 67

45 degree trim!

I pinned the sleeves and also pinned the body a little over an inch on each side to make the piece a little slimmer.

Kingpin!!

I sewed everything up, added a light, springy green camisole underneath, a woven Free People belt I snagged on sale in December and my vintage Candies for good measure!!

Day 67 – After

I love the color combo here and think I’m going to have to try and make a few of these myself!!

I had a salad instead, even though it all looked so yummy.  It was such a fun way to celebrate NC’s last day in town!

It’s a nice dress (both before and after), and I agree about the original belt and the shoulder pads, but I think I might have left that one as is. Very vintage cute in a retro way without being dated.

    • Cindy Price

Yep, my thoughts exactly, Amy. The original looks lovely on Marisa.

I loved the before and I’m glad you didn’t change it too much… you just enhanced it a bit and kept the overall feel of the dress. Very cute, and I would wear it in a heart beat.

  • Paula

Liked the before and would probably just have changed the belt. But also looks great sleeveless. Love it.

I like it when the remakes are styles even I would be able to wear :) .

  • zazzu

I love this transformation. It suits you perfectly and the stripes are so cheerful and summery.

The original dress was okay, but it had too much fabric for a petite person like you.

  • diane2809

Very cute – I love the sleeveless look for summer and the green cami underneath added just the right pop of color!

  • Lovestosew

Very cute, and I love your belt. You are the picture of Summer.

  • Allison Woods

I like this one a lot. The contrasting belt and the green really jazz the whole thing up.

  • MrsWrenches

This one is really good! It wasn’t enough to just take off the sleeves. I like the way you cut them off at an angle. Very Summery! And I LOVE the pictures of Farmer’s Market. For a few moments, I was transported to there, too!

  • Granola Girl

Ooh, I think my mother had that dress in the 80′s, and I wish I had it now so I could do what you just did! That is fabulous!!

  • Sarah_H.

Love to see the way you style things as well as the changes!

  • sandlsiemens

i totally love those bathing suits too… and i bought one from walmart!!! if you google “catalina suit walmart” you should find their “suddenly slim” suit… i love mine… and i also love to see how you can keep coming up with such cute pieces every single day!!! :-D

  • Erin

Missed the mark with this one, I think! I like the original style & shape. Three-quarter-sleeve, collar, and a-line: kind of a wrap-dress silhouette! If you had done some simple nip/tucks to make it fit your body, hemmed 3-4 inches of length from the skirt, it would have been super cute! I do agree with your first move of removing shoulder pads- yuck!

  • Lauraly

Marissa, you could have made it shorter, too! Very cute redo. Would also look great with a thin red or yellow belt.
