75 Days to Go: Karen’s Donation Pt. II

I’m a saver.  I have boxes of remnants from pieces that I hold onto knowing that I’ll use them at some point.  Today, I’m using the remnants from this lovely dress…

Before - 75

This was a piece that the fabulous Karen sent my way that I featured just a few days ago – (Refresher HERE) that ended up looking like this…

Pt. I - After

However, part of what I was left with was this…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Fabric Remnants - 75

Remnants!

Loved all the bead trim, so I had a thought of what to make these into…

…a satchel!!

I began by pinning the edges together, using the black design as my guide.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Pinned Edges - 75

Pin those edges!!

I didn’t want the pouch to be open on top, so I grabbed some more leftovers!!  I took some black fabric that was trimmed from a piece to use as a flap.

More remnants!

I trimmed a chunk from it and pinned the edges of the black material to the back side of the purse material, right side facing right side.  This is going to make it super easy to flip over.

Attaching time!!

Once the black material was pinned, I stitched this in place and sewed the two satchel edges together.

Sew down!

I decided to make the black material into a triangle flap, so I pinned the edges to create a new seam and stitched this down next.

Stitching down the edges!!

We’re almost there!!  I took some of the same ribbon I used for the halter top to prepare a strap.  Not just any strap…a braided strap!!  I tied a knot…

Braid Prep!

…and refreshed my friendship bracelet-making skills!!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Friendship Bracelet - 75

Friendship bracelet time!!

I think I’m going to break out some of the old fb’s and make some new ones to layer on my wrist!!  This was too much fun!  Once my braided strap was complete, I tied the other end and affixed to my satchel!  (I hand stitched it in place, but you could always use safety pins to switch out straps!)

Attached!

I wanted to add a little more character to the piece, as well as a little bit of weight to the flap, so I played with a bunch of gold buttons to see which would work best.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Buttons - 75

Assorted buttons!

I couldn’t decide, so I went with three of them!  I safety pinned these in place…

Pinned Flair!

…so they can be removed/changed/substituted.  My bag was now complete!!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - After Bag - 75

Day 75 - After

The fabric for this is a little thin, so I used it to tote my hoodie in.  However, use the same method for thicker material…then you can carry anything!!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Satchel ECU - 75

New Satchel!!

I love the pop of color – such a fun little piece to have on my hip!!

Yummy leftovers!!

Hope everyone had a most lovely weekend!!

Very cute!  That was my first thought too.  You could have used some other material to make a lining/inner bag so that it would hold more.

    • newdressaday

For sure!  Next time with another fabric :)

  • Natchez

    Cute!

  • Tollyfaye

my mom makes crafts, really nice things.  well, that is until she starts hot gluing buttons on everything.  ill never understand her facination or the fact that she cant draw a straight line between all the gawdy buttons & the fact that no one ever buys her stuff at craft shows.  long story long, you lost me at the buttons lol

    • newdressaday

      Ha, to each their own!

I’ve been making purses lately. The secret I’m using to giving a purse stability is Pellon Craft Fuse. It is basically heavy duty iron-on interfacing that provide the stiffness a purse needs. You can iron it on to the back of the purse fabric, the lining or both. After all, purses don’t get washed. Get yourself some of that! I love it!! My latest creations have been in denim from some thrashed jeans discarded by my Handsome Husband. Maybe I should start my own blog……New Purse a Day!

oooo I’d read it!  I love great bags.

Hi ,I like it about purses,I have been making them out of old jeans, and skirts,
just buy sm,med.and lg.ones cut off ,and make a purse, the size you want  I take my big one when I go out of town,I put hair dryer and other things in it,,,

    • Cindy Price

I would read that blog! I’m a purse freak – can’t have too many.

  • Bronia

Wow, this is gorgeous! One day I will definitely give crafts ago, but in the mean time I will enjoy reading your posts :)

  • Lovestosew

Maybe some iron on interfacing would have given the thin fabric some strength and structure.  it’s easy to use and comes in different weights.  I love the look of the purse, very BoHo chic.

    I Love it!!
