79 Days to Go: Karen’s Donation

Aug 2, 2012 | 25 Comments

This piece came from Karen who just lives a hop, skip, and a jump away from me in Seal Beach, CA!!  I loved the story and I loved how she started her story…

Oh what a story!  My mom (91 at this writing) is and was a glamour queen back in the day.  I am a professional organizer by trade and asked her if she would like some assistance in her own closet.  We spent two days clearing out her walk-in closet so that the only clothes remaining are the ones that ‘make her heart sing’!  She had some beautiful, gorgeous, long gowns that she used to wear to galas and dinners with my Dad, but her lifestyle doesn’t include these types of events anymore so she released all of them to me.  I saved one of them for you to do your magic with.

I’m too short for this dress!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - Length

Look at the length!

The top crepe layer is sheer and pleated, which I love!  Check out the sleeves – prepare to lace up!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - Arms

Look at those sleeves!

I loved the bold color of this piece and really couldn’t wait to get started on it!  (I was really excited because I started doing some sort of flamenco dance to make the beads shake in the empty hallway…)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - Dancin'

Dancin', dancin', dancin'

“The colors are so vibrant, the bead work is exquisite and the crepe material gives it some flair! “  Totally right Karen – time to get to work!

I started on the sleeves first and trimmed out the red, strappy, laces.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Strap Cutting

Strap Cutting!

Doing this opened up the sleeves completely.  We’ll come back here in a minute!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Straps Removed

They're gone!

I’m going to turn this into a summery halter, so I trimmed the long skirt/under layer next.

Goodbye under layer!

With the cranberry under layer gone…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Clean Cut

Clean cut

I had this.  I couldn’t stop thinking how it kind of felt like a long loincloth, because of the curved bottom!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Loincloth

Any other loincloth takers?

To continue on my halter-ish ways, I decided to adjust the length and trimmed off about eight inches.  (I’m holding onto this gorgeous material to make something else with the remnants!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Straight Edge

Straight edge trim!

After tweaking the length, I went back to the top of the piece.  I trimmed a straight line down the back – cut from the neckline all the way down to the waist.  I’m going to take each side and tie them together to secure the top.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Trim Down The Back

Trim down the back!

I placed pins in the areas at the neck where I wanted my straps to go just to test out location before permanently stitching in place.  Kind of similar to a party…you get there, you make some rounds to scope out the crowd, then you pick your spot :)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Pins

Halter Placeholder!

I added two strands of ribbon at my pinned place holders for halter straps…

Halter Straps!!

…and then with back trimmed down the center, I tied both ends together!  (I also cinched with a safety pin towards the top of the back just for extra security.  I know how my sneaks come unlaced, so I’m taking precautions!!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Tied ends!

Tied Ends!!

All the steps were complete and the top was ready to wear!  I took a fitted black bandeau/tube top and wore that underneath to assist in the sheer factor and threw on a pair of jeans from the bottom of my jeans stack in my armoire.  I totally forgot about this pair so they felt like brand new!  I LOVE when that happens!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Finished Halter

Day 79 - After

The tied back was casual and beachy feeling!  I’m a sucker for open backed pieces, especially when it’s hot out.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Halter - Tied Back

Tied in the back!

I had plans with two of my favorite people to grab tacos and thought this top would fit right in with the atmosphere.

Taco Time!

I matched the table, that’s for sure!!

Summer Nights!

My mom is so precious to me and it would be an honor to see one of her pieces in your collection.

It’s an honor for me to have her piece Karen, so I thank you for sending it my way.  I lost it when you mentioned how your mom wanted to hold onto the pieces that ‘made her heart sing’…  I think that’s exactly what clothes are about, all the memories.  Remembering the things you did in them, how you felt.  I have some sentimental pieces that always make me happy to look at because they remind me of who I was with and where I was going.  That’s some big stuff right there.

Your mother is one fabulous lady…

Super cute!  Love the fabric.  But I have one question, aren’t the knots hard to sit back against?  I think I would have preferred a seam in the back but still a lovely piece.

    • newdressaday

Just a little, however when I was driving in my car it was acting like a lovely little massage ball against my back :)

  • DinaB

    Super Cute! :~)

  • Rwfenton

I really like this….however… the back no so much. Perhaps another day you could redo the back. Nice work anyway.

Your posts are in my RSS feed because they put a smile on my face everyday. I’m not much of a comment person, but this story was so lovely it made me want to thank you. Forget the DIY fashion stuff, it is the delight in people and your fun attitude that keeps me coming back everyday. OK, it’s also the DIY fashion stuff. Anyway, thank you again. You rock.

I get so much more out of it from you guys than just the clothes too… Such a lovely comment Karen – made my day!

eeekk! I was so scared to see you cut into this beautiful dress but it definitely looks just as beautiful as a halter top.  What a great story as well. This lady sounds like she has had one exciting life!

Oh, I have some singing pieces too!  Fun!  Love the flap over your breast area.  Really pretty.

I love te story and the redo.
I am visiting family in India and after 2 days of Internet going down, was eagerly waiting for your posts and as usual your posts put a smile on my face :)
Thank You! And your book cover looks lovely!

That is a complicated remodel for a wee little top :) So much fun to see new life in a piece with history!

    • newdressaday

Ha, totally!! Wee little top is the perfect way to describe this :)

  • Susan

This is very pretty material with a challenging shape/design.  I think your halter would look even better with fabric straps and an X-back, along with a center seam.  Love your blog, and check-in every day to see what you will think of next!  I can’t wait to buy your book.

  • Keenzi

Cute and summery, perfect Corona wear!

  • Laura Whitman

love the remake. love the casual jeans & flip flops. def. on my list of faves

  • Lovestosew

I love the front.  It’s really cute.  But the back looks bulky and messy.  I wish you had stitched it up and maybe added a zip or some other kind of closure.  The string strap looks like it’s digging into your chest a little bit.  A wider fabric strap may have been more comfortable.

  • Allison Woods

The front is fab, but the back….is a mess.

  • Sophia

how about using some of the excess fabric to create halterneck ties… looks good now but I reckon the extension of the fabric would make it even more bold and beautiful… possibly a little more comfy too :o )

  • Ms. Fe

hmm, am I the only one on here who loves the back of this top? there, I said it. I LOVE the back! I think it adds some extra fun and visual interest… and here in the tropical heat of louisiana, you learn to appreciate open backs and airy clothes that let you breathe a little!

  • je

This lady sounds like she had an exciting life with obviously exquisite clothing. The halter top is beautiful and could be paired with multiple different things to wear to classier events. With the history this dress has, and after seeing your talent for transformation, I think everyone is expecting just as classy pieces out of the rest of the dress as it has lived in the past. I was sorry to see the strappy red laces and the pattern on the whole front overlay be removed. They were beautiful details not often seen so elegantly. Once again, the halter is beautiful and am anxiously awaiting to see the rest of the transformation of this dress. This is something I think could make it to your next book. ;)

precious story!  what a blessing to have a sweetie of a 91-yr-old mom!
