81 Days to Go: Olympic Necklace

Jul 31, 2012 | 46 Comments

So, I’m totally an Olympic addict.

Olympic Rings

The Rings!

I absolutely love the Olympics and get so excited every two years because I get sucked into the competitions…all the competitions!  Over the weekend I was enamored by the handball and archery games, and have been watching the fencing matches as well, on top of the popular prime time swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball competitions.

After seeing those rings on screen all the time, they’ve been lasered into my head (along with the theme song – I’ll spare y’all the clip…I can’t stop singing it after every commercial break!) and I came up with a fun project to show my Olympic spirit!

It’s necklace time!!  I began with five key rings…

…and created the formation, attaching the rings to each other.

Ring Formation!

Time to get these bad boys in their right shades!

Taking a cue from the Anthropologie lookalike necklace I made a few months back

…I decided to work with embroidery floss again!

Like a floss :)

I began with the ring all the way to the left and grabbed the floss in blue!  I kept the floss in place by putting it right at the ring opening before adding E-6000 glue to really secure.

Connecting floss to the ring!

Then began the wrapping!  I did this method for each of the rings.  I had the top row of three complete…

…and then got the final two finished as well.

All done!

I took some craft chain I picked up at Joann’s along with jump rings and connected both to the blue and red rings at each end.

Connect Four!

Once the chain was connected, I added a spring ring clasp to one of ends of the chain…

I couldn’t wait to get this around my neck!

Super cute!  I love the Olympics too and would totally get a tattoo of the rings if I were an Olympian.  A craft project such as this will have to suffice.

    • newdressaday

Ha, sounds like a plan! I saw Matt Grevers tat of the rings on his arm as he swam yesterday.  He got gold, so I guess it was worth it!!

  • Sarah_H.

Super-great idea. I loved the idea at the beginning of the blog, but was not sure how you were going to pull it off. I was thinking high gloss enamel or even nail polish….but the thread wrapping took the gold!

    • newdressaday

You could have definitely painted or nail polished…this took a little while, but do whatever works for you!! Yay gold!

  • Taras_88

    • Bella

No, the Olympics are held every 2 years, in order of winter games, then summer games in 2 years, then winter in 2 years, ect. <3

    • guest

summer olympics are every four years. winter olympics are also every four years, alternatively. the last winter olympics was in 2010, two years ago, and the last summer olympics was in 2008, four years ago.

  • jaego

To Polly1337: Winter Olympics alternate with summer olympics every 2 years.  Marissa: BRILLIANT!~

I can see adding more key rings and ending up with a real statement necklace or using it as a tipper for my new favorite refashioning obsession, creating a tube from my thrifted piece and then adding all kinds of straps to make it into a tanktop or halter.
