83 Days to Go: Stacy R

Jul 28, 2012 | 22 Comments

I’ve been playing with some color mixing/painting/dyeing and when I saw Stacy’s piece, it fit right in with all my work-in-progresses :)   You’ll soon see them here, promise!

Hi Marisa,

I have been a huge fan of your blog for a while now and I have been inspired to do a few of my own remakes (with the help of my best friend Jen who makes fashion accessories, purses, etc. – and who taught me to sew last year).  This piece was adventurous…

Wonder what she’ll do?  I’m loving the sleeves :)

We ended up dyeing it, taking it up a bit, and shortening the sleeves!!

Voila!  Thanks for the inspiration!

The new color of the dress is awesome – I love the muted flowers now and it has a tie dyed feel!  I must say that I would have totally kept the sleeves, but that’s just me and my vintage/ruffle-trimmed tastes :)   (I have a top that I made from a dress with the same sleeves about 10 years ago that I’m obsessed with – will wear soon to show!)  This really is perfect for summer with those cute capped sleeves too.  Way to rock it Stacy!!

Love the dye job, and the remake! Great dress!

  • Kissem37

Love the length and the dye job. I did love the sleeves, but I know they can be a bit much for some people :P

  • Nancy McGinley

    This one is gorgeous!

Open the leftover sleeves up, sew them together, add an elastic waist band, and give it to a little girl. Add another ruffle or two from the skirt leftovers if it is too short.

       What a great idea!

I never would’ve thought of dying this, but it turned out great!  Definitely a dress I would wear.  Good job!

  • Janelle

Turned out very nice,  wouldn’t have thought of dyeing the piece either, I wonder what color she used?  blue?

    I’d have turned it into a jacket… :)

Excellent idea. What would you have done? Would you have turned that waistband into a tie somehow? And cut it to hip length?

  • Giniamagers

I am so impressed! I would have never have thought to die it but that was a brilliant idea! Great work!

I would have been torn on the sleeves, too, and would never have thought of dyeing a print that was already nifty. Nice looking dress as a result!

  • sash

    very nice!

Really cool! Such a great idea to dye it! Inspiring transformation. Thanks for sharing it — gives me ideas.

So great to see what others are doing!! Love the update here. The sleeves were very pretty, but a bit vintage. I think I would have kept them, but not I remember them from back then.

Dying was a great idea–huge improvement. The end result is very cute.

I would never have thought to die a print like that, but I LOVE the way it turned out! Nice work!

thanks for all the comments folks. This was a fun project to take on, and I was so shocked by how completely different it looked.
The sleeves were interesting to say the least, but I wasn’t feeling the big poofiness of them. My friend balked when I bought it, since it was such a crazy fabric to start with, but the important thing was it FIT perfectly on top.
The dye job did mute things nicely from the original crazy print.

I would have left the print alone, but I see what you were going for and it looks good. Nice job on the fit too.

    Great job!

Wow so cute, it was such a good call dyeing it I never would have thought of that.
