My time in the South has been such fun – lots of family to visit, BBQ to eat, and vintage wares to find!  I scored some goodies at the Goodwill outlet and let’s just say took advantage of their pay-by-the-pound system and scored some super fab clutches in addition to some more formal pieces!!

New Dress A Day - Goodwill - Vintage Stash

Goodwill Score!!

Because I was so lucky with my clutch finds, I figured a giveaway would be in order.  Just want to share the thrifty love!!  Today, I’m giving away this lovely black satin-y clutch (it’s also in the pic above!) with something else super fantastic…a pattern from my mom’s collection!!  It was the one that I couldn’t stop giggling over.  “Show-Me! Patterns” in their Reversible Vest variety?!?!?  I know you want it!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Goodwill - Vintage Stash Giveaway

Win me!!

To enter, leave a comment below with something you remember loving/wearing/needing to have that you would totally take back now if you could.  I remember ‘needing’ a Hypercolor T-shirt when I was a kid and when I finally got one (after the initial hoopla wore down) it didn’t change color!!  A winner for this (as well as last week’s earrings) will be picked early next week!  Can’t wait to hear all these gems.

Happy Friday!

  • Rachael (Frugal Faye)

Okay, this was a combo situation.  My stone-washed jeans (zippers and bows at the ankles) and a green and pink fanny pack.  FANNY PACKS, AGH!  There are some incredible pictures…

  • Sue

A pair of black platform shoes that made me quite tall (I’m 5’2″) that hurt like you know what.

    Ah, the memories…  :)

  • Dee

I just ‘had’ to have a reversible (pale mint green on one side, pale lavendar on the other) ‘Flashdance’ style T-shirt… with the neck opening so big that it hung off one shoulder.

  • Darsedee28

Was it the 1990s?  I want the colored jeans..You know dark purple or orange.  sadly I never received them. sigh

  • Emily Goodson

I asked every year for the jelly sandals until I finally got them! I kept asking for different colors each year though since I would wear them into the ground. Ah the good ole days.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=41603120 Emily Haager

Jelly sandals for me too! I kept asking until my mom let me get them (but only in clear so they could match everything). They were sweaty and hot and uncomfortable. And they wore out after about a month!

  • Rebsues

Okay — back in the 70s — gauchos w/matching vest, and cargo jumpsuits — the jumpsuits were way more trouble than they were worth when it came to using the bathroom …

  • Amanda Davis

Good Lord, in 1986, I HAD TO HAVE jelly shoes.  My mommy took me to Big Lots (only time I’ve ever been in one, lol) and I got 2 pairs for like $3, lol.   I ran home so excited.  Needless to say about 20 minutes after having them on I realized they are the most uncomfortable shoes I ever wore in my life & had blisters all over.  I don’t even think they were ever worn again. HORRID!   Go figure….$1.50 shoes are not comfy, lol

I had to have a Spumoni Sweatshirt!  Do you remember Spumoni? They were those shirts with the adorable puffy painted little teddy bears or kitties or whatever all over them.  They totally made knock offs that you could buy at Kmart or wherever, that’s what my mom would by for me.  I sooo wanted to the real deal.. but those little puffy painted cuties were at a high fashion cost… I remember when I finally got one I never wanted to take it off!

Oh geez, when I was in sixth grade I got a mix and match set of outfits that i thought were totally awesome (yeah it was the 80s) hot pink and turquoise, both metallic.  It was a skirt, pair of pants, sleeveless turtleneck, and jacket.  I loved them, but looking back now I cringe!

  • Btejkl

My mom made me a blue corduroy jumpsuit that I loved (hello 1970′s). I even had a matching neck scarf. I felt like one of Charlie’s Angels.

  • Anne Rimler

blue striped osh kosh engineer (farmer’s) jeans – i wore them almost every day - in high school…

  • Rebekah

I could not WAIT to get a Champion sweatshirt….and a hypercolor T just like you. Mine DID change color, though. I totally loved it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hidesama Ren Akuma

I remember I had a thing for shirts with bell shaped sleeves… you know, the kind you’d see at a ren fair… All my friends wore them.

  • Tollyfaye

Well at the fair they sold the roach clips with leather strings and feathers that we all wore in our hair. . . Dear Lord, my mother let me go to first grade with roach clips in my hair. No wonder I also enjoyed hyper colored t’s (mine worked), jelly shoes, califlower bangs, giant red glasses, sturrup pants, sweatshirts that said BUM, and bibs, and then a long grunge stint–flannels every day with tons of eyeliner (class of ’94!!). . . . Rock out!

  • Rakhel

Oversized black t-shirt with hot pink, puffy writing in giant capital letters across the chest that said R E L A X!!! (Anybody remember Frankie Goes to Hollywood singing “Relax”… a song with adult innuendos that went right over my 10 year old head!)

    • Bengracemomma

“Relax” is going to be played at the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. Maybe your t-shirt will be cool again

  • Cinak630

a metallic jumpsuit-back in the disco days. what a horrible fashion those were!!!!

  • lent

I also loved the hypercolor tshirt.  And not only did mine work then, I still have it and it still works.  Not that I wear it.  It stays hidden in my closet…  :)

  • Amie R

I HAD to have a pair of Hot Pants – OMG did I just type Hot Pants??? – in the 70′s!  I took the bus to Gilchrist’s and bought the brightest yellow pair that they had.  I remember wearing them to a 7th grade dance and thought I was so fashionable!  LOL

  • Laura Whitman

I remember wearing gauchos and ponchos in middle school; sometimes together. Ugh. I shudder at the thought. Not a wise fashion choice there.

    xoxo,
    Laura

    Leg Warmers – ’nuff said

  • Alicia Jordan

I had a purple hypercolor shirt.  And it worked.  When you got it hot the purple turned lighter.  And I still have it.  It no longer changes color but I still wear it around the house to clean in.  But my greatest want was shiny black Spandex pants.  I loved those things.  Wore them all the time.

  • Angela

I remember wearing 2 pairs of socks at a time…in two different outfit coordinating colors.  Both had to be of the same brand and they had to be tall enough to scrunch down, one color on top of the other, giving more bulk to my ankles than anyone would ever want to have.

  • Milerbuggg78

IIn elementary school, I wore hammer pants! Orange ones! With a matching shirt! And unfortunately, I have the school picture to always remind me.

  • Cindy

The Nehru (sp?) jackets my best friend and I had to have after Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band first came out-still love that style jacket.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/KEOXFOCRFNOGE75OB6MBBRM6QE Maggie

I had to have zuma pants and L.A. gear white high tops with rhinestones!  Lol!

  • lynaeve

I had this pair of “jeans” that I got from Walmart that was a shiny maroon/blue color. I wish I still had them. I would make something out of them. The fabric was awesome even if I looked really bad wearing it.

  • Billiarddragon

In high school my mom made me a sleeveless dress that was bright lemon yellow, with a big black band across the top, that also went all the way down one side. It made me feel so thin when I wore it.

  • Gayle406

I STILL have a Norma Kamali suit, with the peplum long skirt and huge puffy sleeves that I paid a FORTUNE for, even by today’s standards, for in the early ’80s.  Moss green is the color name, or it was then.  Totally vintage now, but totally waaaay too small!

  • Taysha Riggs

I needed to always wear my matching floral pattern top/stirrup pant set. I thought since the top and pants were the exact same pattern that I was KEWL…. oh the humanity

  • MerryMary

I bought a top that I really thought I needed, but it was too small.  I had just started losing weight and used it as a goal to fit into.  Sixty-five pounds later I triumphantly tried on the top, which is now too big and really didn’t like the style.  It’s in my closet waiting for me to “Marisafy” it!!!

  • Polly1337

When i was a kid the cool trend one year was jogging bottoms with poppers all the way up the side. Mostly impractical and great when someone came along and ripped them open!

  • Ashettles

The white boots I wanted so badly in 6th grade.  What was I thinkin’?!!!

  • Van_lois

hot pink patent leather pumps with chunky heals and the matching envelope purse

  • Maureen

My friend in H.S. and I got blue satin jackets just like what Andy Gibb wore! She was crazy over Andy and I went along w/ the trend! We wore them to school thniking we were just too cool!

  • Kathleen

I wanted “Beatle Boots” when I was in junior high.  My parents bought them for me, but they were taupe, not black.  I cringe when I think about how proud I was to wear them–and I did wear them!

  • MrsWrenches

On my only trip to Dallas, (circa 1990) a stop at Neiman Marcus’ clearance rack provided me with a matching skirt and jacket with bright yellow, pink and orange flowers!!! Worst of all, I wore it to the DMV and found myself looking at all of that 80′s madness for the next 15+ years. Aaauuuughhhhhh!!

  • Lgnadolny

An eyelet shirt I got at JcPenny 21 years ago that I scored for $5 using a $10 off coupon I got for applying for a credit card. It was white and very cute and  I wore it as often as I could without looking like  that was the only shirt I owned. I have owned similar since then but none have been like the original,

  • “Cousin M”

Hey Risa’ – you don’t have to enter me in your contest but was wondering if you remembered that store Units.  They had the clothes that you could convert in to multiple things like one item could be a skirt, tube top, belt or dress.
Tell g-ma I said “hey sweetie”

  • TriciaLynnH

A $300 prom dress that was purple and sparkled. What the heck was I thinking?!

  • Crabb Debbie

My wedding dress. I was on a very tight budget and time frame so I just got a dress off the rack from Jessica Mclintock. It had big bows, huge puff sleeves and lots of sequins on its very shiny white satin . Now, 20 years later every time I see a wedding picture I cringe and say what was I thinking?

  • http://mothercrafter.wordpress.com/ vanina

I used to have this black velvet leggins with foot straps that I paired with a very 80′s peplum blouse with big gold plastic buttons… hate that look! I will use the leggins now but that blouse NEVER AGAIN!

  • er

I still wish I had my UNITS outfit that I begged my parents to buy for me! tapered pants and the tube style belt in slate blue with an ecru short sleeve tee. glamazing!

  • Claire

In the early to mid ’80′s, I NEEDED this ’40′s inspired jacket that wasn’t even faux fur, it was like fuzzy muppet hair.  It was grape Koolaid color.  You just couldn’t tell me I didn’t look good in it…LOL!!!

  • Helena A.

Marisa, when I was a little girl (8 years old) I was in summer vacations at my aunt’s house. She had 5 kids. Two of them were 2 little girls with 8 and 11 years. My aunt orders to them, dresses and for my surprise she order one to me as well! Three dresses alike! Is was a long dark blue dress with little flowers in white. I fell in love with that dress, but my mom, didn’t. She tought it was too dark for a little girl, and when a got back home she throw it away… Today I still dream with that dress… I wich I still had it, to dress it on my 8 years old daughter! Kisses from Portugal, Helena.

Sweet finds!  I’d have to say those little feather poof hair clips or the butterfly hair clips (with the moving wings) ……ughhhh.  haha.

  • Katie Evans

Definitely that hideous puffy-sleeved princess dress I wanted when I was five. I thank my parents for not buying it!

  • Blondie

OHHH I had a denim halter jumpsuit that I made — LOVED IT !!! big WIDE legs !! Wore it in the 70′s – disco fever !!!!

  • Kristen

Either jelly shoes (oooh I begged and never got them) OR my monogrammed flare jeans with yellow piping–wish I’d kept those.  So happy you enjoyed Charlotte–I lived there 14 years

  • Phoenixflameamy

My grandmother made me a long vest in a black and white holstein cow print that I LOVED!!! GAG! I see those pictures now and just groan – What was I thinking? LOL!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1285474444 Diane Eno

A pair of hiphugger, black and white cordoroy snake print bell bottomed pants, man I thought I was so cool, I can still hear the swish of the  cords when I walked..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1024217081 Deb Carleen

I really loved my yellow. soft, hiphugger, bell-bottoms.  The bells were medium wide and swished when I walked.  I got them from a consignment shop so they were all broken in before I started wearing them..  They were the best pants ever.

  • Keysdeb

I am so going to date myself, but I wanted fish net stockings. And I do mean the only option back then were stockings. My dad thought they were just too risque. I eventually wore him down. lol I thought I was hot stuff.

  • SuzynoQ

I used to wear anything orange!

  • Twilight

Back in the 80s I begged my parents for a color block shirt. Big neon squares of color. What was I thinking?!

  • Erica Newhart

When I was young (think 5 or 6) I BEGGED my mom to get me a pair of jellies.  I don’t think I wore them more than once or twice!

  • Thedashbadger

I would like my Punky Brewster high-tops back. And my snap bracelets.

  • http://www.buttonsbowsbling.blogspot.com/ Laurette

I really wanted a mood ring but it never seemed to work right, what a huge disappointment that ring was.

  • Shylomicorizon

Haha, you had to be careful with the hypercolor shirts, no putting them in the dryer or they would be ruined!  I just HAD to have those tee shirts with the Looney Tunes characters wearing clothes or what have you on the front and then on the back there was the back view of the characters. I finally got one when we were visiting family in New Mexico… I remember it had Daffy, Taz and Bugs dressed up in gang type clothes!  lol, if only I had known what that meant…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LW423AASLOYR7I6BH36OW5DBLI Judy

I had to have Maypo oatmeal.  I nagged my mother until I got it.  It looked nothing like it did on the commercial and tasted even worse.  Never one to waste food, she made me eat that bowl, and made me eat it for breakfast until the entire box was gone:(

  • Cathy Inman

Love the purse but I had to laugh when I saw the pattern. That could have been me posing for it back in the day. I bought a jacket and pants set with money that I made from my first job. I was styling in this bright green outfit made out of corduroy. I kept it until right after my daughter was born when my husband made me get rid of it. Funny thing is that it would be back in style with the 70′s look. The cut is something my daughter would wear but I’m not sure that she would wear that bright a color though.

  • Missbrowneyes98

Oh the 1980s… a fashion woe for all of us who were young and now in out late 30s and early 40s! I would love to have so many things back from that decade as I was a heavy set girl and they never made clothes quickly for us back then (now it’s a couple of months, back then it was YEARS unless you did your own and then people laughed at you because they knew it was homemade if a “fat girl” was wearing it). The one thing I’d really love to have back is the high waisted foldover front acid wash, taped leg calf length jeans with that hideous wide fake leather belt!
If someone already nabbed those jeans… I’d like my mustard yellow Shaun Cassidy mustard screen print t-shirt as a 2nd choice.

  • Katie

Stirrup pants! I NEEDED them!!! I will say they looked pretty stellar with my Keds and my tall scrunchie socks.

  • Julie

Yes, Hypercolor! I remember having an ugly brownish tan shade that turned yellow (I think it was on sale….). But, I never understood the Hypercolor jeans. They just change color in weird places. ^^  Love the blog.  Keep it up.

  • Karen

The purple stretchy leggings with stirrups, that both of my sisters and I adored. And matching my oversized t-shirt bunched up with a scrunchie to go with them

  • Gamarho

    What a great find!

  • Lovestosew

I had to have jelly sandals.  I wore them once and they made my ankles bleed, the blisters were so bad, I can’t even tell you.

  • Jesica

I could say stretch pants and tunics with several pairs of scrunched down socks but I totally rocked that.  So, I guess I’ll pick my Miami Vice white jacket with mile high shoulder pads.

  • Mindy

My mom’s black cashmere cardigan, which had survived the 50s/60s, and was often worn with the buttons down the back by my older sister and me in the 70s-80s until we absolutely wore the thing out!

  • Allisonm

I remember as a kid wearing the one piece terry cloth short sets that tied at the shoulder! They were so comfortable! I have a feeling that today it wouldn’t be all that flattering though. :/
