We’re back in sewing business!!  I got my hands on a machine and I finally got to fix the below dress today!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - 87

Day 87 - Before

It was big on me, so first plan of business was to take it in!  I started with the body of the piece…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Pinning Body - 87

Pinned body!

…pinned the arms and torso then headed to the waist.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Taking In - 87

Elastic Measuring!

The waist was elastic, so I tested it out (stretched it) when trying it on to pin in just the right spot.  Time to sew!!

I stitched the body, waist and skirt…

Time to make this fit!

…then tweaked the length next.  I wanted the dress to hit at the knees, so I measured about six inches of fabric and pinned where I wanted the dress to fall.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - New Hem - 87

New Hem!

I trimmed off the excess material next to my new seam…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Trimming - 87

Post-stitch trim time!

…stitched the hem, and had my blue and white dress ready for dinner!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Open Kitch Parking Lot - 87

Day 87 - After

We had a little family dinner at Open Kitchen in Charlotte – the coolest thing is that my parents had a date here back in the early 70s before they got married.  It probably looked exactly the same tonight as it did when they were there 40 years ago.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Soulja Boy - 87

Soulja Boy!

We were snapping pics all night – they got me and D across the table…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - DM - 87

Sibs!!

…and I got a picture of the bottle of Chianti we ordered.  This bottle was the same one that my parents remembered having when they were last here.  Now whether the vintner is the same is one question, but the wicker bottomed bottle was just like my mom remembered.

Vino!

She remembered well because she turned it into a candlestick holder and let the wax drip down the sides of it.  She said it was all the rage then…I secretly want to do that with this one now!!

We had a fun evening of reminiscing and enjoying the same Italian recipes that have been served at this resto for the past 60 years.

Buon Giorno!

It was like we stepped into a family time machine, which was awesome!

  • Salome_delilah

I love this fabric and I love how you’ve kept is as a simple pretty dress. Looks great.

  • Kissem37

I really like this dress- its got a little of that Liesl from Sound of Music feel. Now I’ll be singing ‘I am 16 going on 17′ all day…

    • newdressaday

I always get So Long, Farewell stuck in my head…probably because my favorite part is the “adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu.”

  • DinaB

What a wonderful place to share family memories, and what a beautiful dress! I hope your parents are doing well and I can see your brother is as handsome as ever! Have a fun mini vaca!

    • newdressaday

He’s so tan!! The family is doing excellent :)

  • Sue Kol

Is the fabric poly or cotton? Very pretty!

  • Heather

I was hoping you would leave the dress completely in-tact, because what a beautiful print and style!  So classic and chic!  LOVE IT!

  • Sarah_H.

Great up-date! You and my coffee start the day….at 10: 30. I do love retirement!

    molto carino – very nice

  • Allison Woods

I was all ready to diss the “after” b/c of the dropped waist that you were basically stuck with, but making it form-fitting really improves that drop-waist silhouette in a most remarkable way. Designers take note!!

  • Carol

The blue in the dress and the red in your hair look sooo pretty together! By the way, back in the day you could buy candles especially made to drip. They dripped a rainbow of colors. Found a couple of them at an estate sale not long ago.

  • Kristen

So glad you enjoyed Charlotte, and the dress looks great!

  • Tollyfaye

Love it, and that you made it more fitted to you, sometimes you are just too baggy and you are a beautiful girl! Good times with family are the best times!

  • Molly

I have lived in Charlotte for 4 years and I’ve never been to Open Kitchen, though I always hear it described exactly as pictured!  So cute.  I would totally be like “girl, lets go have drinks and talk sewing because everyone who sews in Charlotte is about 90 years old” but wow that sounds incredibly creepy.  Beautiful dress!!!!

  • Lovestosew

I love the fit, you look great!  The skirt could even have been a inch shorter to show off your pretty pins.  Very nice.

  • Margoslaby

I was hoping you would make it into an awesome dress! YAY! :D I love it when you make dresses!

    • newdressaday

       Yay!!

Your bro is super cute!  Just sayin’.

  • Alison Aikins

Just to let you know, my parents had their second dinner as a married couple at the open kitchen!! WE STILL GO THERE FOR EVERY ANNIVERSARY!! That is amazing that your parents had a date there too! (And my parents say it hasn’t really changed since the 70s either)

–Oh, I like your dress too!!

    • newdressaday

That’s amazing!  We ran into another couple, similar to my parents, who hadn’t been back for 25 years!  Something about that place, I tell ya!!

  • Anna Puddles

That dress is so cute on you. I can’t believe I’m using the word cute in that way and I’m not even american.

  • Ann

Soooooo adorable!! I want that dress! And, your brother is cute too..

  • Tori Benick

    Great, great transformation! :)

  • Tori Benick

Beautiful! Looks like we were in the same area this week! I live in Ohio but my son-in-law flew me to Charlotte last Tuesday to surprise my daughter for her birthday Wednesday! They live in Mount Holly! Plus I got to spend much needed Grandma tine with 6 month old Paisley! Enjoy! LOVE your blog!

    • newdressaday
