88 Days to Go: $1 Remake

Jul 23, 2012 | 18 Comments

I felt it fitting to shoot this week’s outfits in front of my parents house that sits the old bench I used to pose in front of.  The memories of that lovely bench, le sigh.  Unforch I decided to flare the dress right in front of it, but you’ll see it more over the next few days!

I LOVED this print – felt like a pattern on blue & white porcelain!

Day 88 - Before

Before I got to sewing, I decided to peruse my mom’s old sewing/crafting goodies in the garage and found some winners.  (You just might see a few of these goodies up for grabs this week!)  I cannot wait to use that eyelet tool!

I found her machine…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Sewing Machine - Singer - 88

Hello Ms. Singer!

…and began to get my piece ready.  There just happened to be a small snafu.  It wasn’t working!!  My mom turned it on and tested it for me before I arrived and it lit up, wheel was fine, however once it was sew time, it just wasn’t agreeing.

Yikes!

I’m getting my hands on another one tomorrow, so this piece will finally get turned around.  Alas dinner with Aunt L and Uncle C was not meant to be had in this dress.

On route to a dinner of BBQ (when in the south…) we had a flash flood of sorts!!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Rainy Day - 88

Downpour!!

It was such a treat because it’s been a while since seeing big droplets like these – there was some light drops in LA last week, but they were more like restaurant misters, lightly grazing the cars and concrete.  This was legit rain!

We got to the restaurant where I devoured a pulled pork sandwich and took down one of my dad’s ribs.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Oh My Ribs - 88

Oh My Ribs!!!

I wasn’t a rib girl until I tasted true rib glory at Smitty’s in Lockhart, TX this past year.  Those were the best ribs I had ever tasted and these ones in Indian Land, SC came in a close second.

I’m currently in a food coma, so tomorrow will be fun to get back on the sewing wagon!!

Oh wow! The first thing I thought when I saw that pattern was how gorgeous it would be as shirts, with either a scalloped edge or a vintage crocheted lace edge. If you cut enough off the hem you should totally make some!

I meant to say shorts. My smart phone can’t keep up with me.

      • newdressaday

Ha! Those fickle smart phones ;)

my Mum had the exact same machine! That machine never worked properly either LOL.

  • Kelly Luna

My mom had that SAME machine! It’s the one I learned on. Oh, the memories…

    • newdressaday

I love how this machine is bringing back so many fond memories!!

New York has been having a ton of rain lately, last thursday there was a super weird storm in Queens!

      Stay dry!!

You gotta love raiding mom’s stash. I only live 2 houses away from my parents at the moment and I’m constantly down there “borrowing” buttons, ribbon and fabric from her extensive collection.

    • newdressaday

      Isn’t “borrowing” awesome??

Love the eyelet tool… I didn’t know they used to make a tool.  Would love to see how it works.  Whenever I do eyelets there is much cursing involved.  Love raiding my moms stash… She inherited a collection of antique thread and buttons years ago and its so much fun to go through.

Love going home…:)  I live in California and my parents live in Georgia.  Love that southern hospitality…and the food!

AHHHH LOCKHART TX!!!  My husband is from Lockhart, my inlaws are still there.  We visit a lot.  We live further south.  And, we eat at Smitty’s every time.  Oh, LOVE the blog.  I look forward to checking it out every day!  Thanks From Texas!

I laughed because I have that very same $1.75 McCALL’S “carefree  pattern” from 1977 still in my “vintage stash”…I used it several times back then when I was in college & needed a “new top quick”!  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  • Chranmo

That’s my sewing machine!  The trusted Singer Scholastic — but unlike some of you, mine has always worked great (knock on wood).  When I was taking a sewing class in college, the school was getting rid of some of the machines (a sign of the times I guess), but I got the machine, accessories and the cabinet — for $85.  Still some of the best money I ever spent (and this was probably 1986).

You look great in blue print, the scale is just right for you. I remember those Chianti bottles. Congrats to your parents!  I’m still looking for $1 dresses.

Do you remember the name of the rib joint in Lockhart? I will be in that area soon and want some ribs.

  • Erin

Hey, that’s the sewing machine I have.  My grandmother gave it to me.  I admit – at this point, it’s not as reliable as it was when my grandmother used it!
