94 Days to Go: Wednesday Giveaway!!

Jul 18, 2012 | 112 Comments

I absolutely LOVED all the brilliant ideas everyone submitted last week for yummy eats that don’t require heating up the stove and making my already hot kitchen even hotter without having A/C!!  I love my old apartment, however I most definitely miss having central air (and a dishwasher, if we’re really going to vent :)   I can’t wait to put together our non-stove night next month for cooking club!  (Congrats to Sarah Wibowo for winning last week’s goodies!)

Today, I’m giving away some goodies in the melony/fuchsia variety…a fab pair of handcrafted melon rhinestone/beaded earrings and tinted Nivea Lip Gloss.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Giveaway - 94

Win Me!!!

To enter, leave a comment below of something you only wear/eat/do during the summer that you look forward to wearing/eating/doing each year.  I have this fabulous Tracy Feith for Target dress that I got when she did a collaboration with the Targe back in ’09, but it’s so super bright that I can’t really get away with wearing it outside summer.  Here’s what it looks like:

A winner will randomly get chosen next week!!

I’m a bit of a foodie, so I always look forward to the season fruits and vegetables.  Corn is my favorite.  My dad had a huge vegetable garden, and the family recipe was always “boil the water, then go pick the corn”.  I also look forward to watermelon, cherries, and berries, especially raspberries.  (The latter remind me of my wedding – I ate a huge container of fresh raspberries as I got ready.)

  • Amber Saugier

    My swim suit.

  • Emily Goodson

I look forward to eating tons and tons of watermelon!!!

  • Julia

Well, there’s the obvious looking forward to doing anything besides schoolwork because I finally have the time, but fashion-wise I love all the flowy, light silhouettes that only work in summer. I also have a fantastic pair of sandals I got from the “Poet/Sandal Maker of Athens” in Greece, which I always look forward to wearing.

Once a year, on a hot sunny summer day, when all the ingredients are absolutely fresh and at the top of their season, I make a juicy, warm, absolutely makes me melt, salad of grilled peaches, grilled tomatoes, and grilled bread.  I halve the peaches, leave the skin on, and give them a quick coat of olive oil.  Same for the tomatoes.  For bread, I use a super flavorful, chewy artisan bread, usually white, so the texture compliments the fruits and soaks up the juices released from the grilled peaches and tomatoes.  I grill them just long enough to make them warm and imprint some grill marks.  They take on kind of a smokey flavor.  On the plate they go with a quick sprinkle of high quality balsamic vinegar and a dash of salt and pepper.  I sit in a comfy chair on the patio to consume this feast.  The warm sun on my back and the warm juices of the salad relax me to my core.  Ahhhh….

  • Kriswatt

I love watermelon and the fourth of July fireworks! And I probably love more that I am usually with family and good friends when I’m eating watermelon and watching fireworks! :D

Nothing better than going to Summer Concerts and Festivals! We are blessed with Free concerts at the Finger Lakes Race Track (tonight is ”Little River Band”!, Eddie Money was a couple of weeks ago)  and the Finger Lakes Community College has a wonderful Performing Arts outdoor Theater “The Shell” with a fabulous lineup every year. Over the years I’ve seen No Doubt, Kid Rock, Santana, Howie Mandell, Barrry Manilow, Chicago, Maroon 5, BareNaked Ladies, Steve Winwood w/ Michael Frante (if you ever get a chance to see this guy, DO IT He is Amazing), Journey is coming this month,  I could go on for a long time :)

Every summer My husband and I along with our two children make the 14 hour drive from out home in Derbyshire, UK to Clachtoll beach in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. It’s our favourite place in the whole world. We spend two weeks camping and being lazy and enjoying each others company without all the distractions that come with our usual daily life.
The memories from our summer trip last throughout the year until its time to pack up and go again :)

  • Btejkl

I love flip-flops and have tons of them. They don’t work real well in Ohio except for summer:) I do have a friend who wears sandals year-round, though………

  • A Garcia24

MANGOS! I live in Miami and summer here automatically means mango season! My grandmother has her own mango tree in her backyard (as every cuban grandmother in south florida does) so we are lucky enough to have a fresh supply every day!

  • Jacqueline in Atlanta

Watermelon, baby! You aren’t going to find it in the winter. They can’t grow them in a greenhouse. (Can you imagine? They would take up the whole place!) You just get watermelon for a few precious weeks in summer. Right now I have a yellow meat one cut up in my frig. yum, yum!

  • Jess in VA

I can’t wait each summer for that first cone of soft serve eaten outside at a summer carnival! I also cannot wait to light citronella candles outside on the patio, and watching fireflies with sweet southern ice tea and good company or a book. I also love to wear the baby doll swishy tank tops. Finially, WATERMELON!!!!!!

  • Amanda M

I love summer! I only eat Watermelon and Strawberry Shortcake during the summer. Thanks for the giveaway! :)
    Have a great day!

  • ROC

I LOVE wearing sundresses and eating outside at restaurants on the beach.  I live in the midwest so this is not something I get to do unless it’s summer.

  • Char

I always eat a corn dog and have a cup of real lemonade at the local Fair which is held the last of July.  Fair food and Summer go together.

  • Linda

I love eating cherry tomato’s off the vine…… a summer treat in WI!

  • Annie K

I just LOVE eating raspberries in the summer. Each one is like a little piece of candy! YUM! :)

  • jennifereastman1973

Cucumber salad is something I find refreshing to eat in the summer. Not quite as good as when the cucumbers came from my Grandfathers’ but that I could rectify that by planting my own.

  • Katrina

Homemade Ice Cream with fresh strawberries, fresh veggies. Tomatos for sure!

  • JoJo

Watermelon!!! I love it, and I know it can be bought year-round… but it’s just not as good!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HLTOZ6D6KYZHTA5FYQD42547UA Heather

I can’t wait each summer to go to the BEACH!    I lOVE the sun, white sand, and crystal clear water!

  • Cinak630

Sandals!!! cannot wait to wear sandals after having my poor feet pent up in shoes doing the Chicago winters.

  • Lcwalls

Any kind of melon. You can’t get them in AR any other time of year. I am also a massive fan of vine ripened tomatoes. You can get the cardboard tasting ones at the store, but I love the ones that are grown locally and sold out of the back of a truck on the side of the road. Their prices are usually more reasonable as well.

Hand dipped ice cream!!  There is just someting about 90 degree heat and a cone and trying to eat it before it runs down your arm!! And then you drive around and see how the corn is growing and look for deer grazing.  This summer ice cream melts faster then you can eat it, the corn only makes you sad, and it is too hot for the deer to come out far enough to see them from the road!!  Thank goodness the heat broke today and it will only be 85!!

Don’t count this as an entry, as I don’t have my ears pierced, but maxi dresses are the absolute best part of summer <3

  • Meg

I have a similar dress from Old Navy, but it’s screamin’ neon orange and pink. I’m not sure I can get away with it any other time of the year. I also love being able to go camping and spend entire days in the water – there’s something about a natural swimming hole that’s so much better than a pool!

  • Lauren E.

    I love wearing flip-flops!!!

  • Stephanie

Definitely flip flops.  I would either wear those or no shoes at all if I could get away with it.

  • elsea sea

cherries!!  they get too expensive during winter =(

  • Anokhy

    Frozen grapes!

  • Vivettesdance

I have been friends with the same cyrcle of women (11 of us!) for 30 years.  We used to meet every Mon/Wed/Fri morning after our exercise classes at the YWCA while our kids were little…time passed, lives changed and now we meet Wed evenings…except I work at my dance studio Sept-May so I don’t get to see them other than Christmas break.  So, I love summer when I can meet with my very-long time friends every Wed evening.

  • tx4good

For summer it is all about the grill!  We are grilling everything we can to keep the house cool – last night it was garlic chicken on the grill with Nan bread – yum!!!

  • http://www.wom-mom.com/ Wom Mom Ethne

‘Real’ fruits and vegetables! Gazpacho, tomato/basil sandwiches, rhubarb pie and fruit crisps (as long as someone else bakes them). My favorite thing to do is: stay where it’s air conditioned, preferably with a fan blowing directly on me. I don’t like heat!

  • Tonya Renee

    What an adorable, happy dress.

  • http://rtthvintage.blogspot.com/ Sara

Day drinking outside with friends :) Preferably at the beer garden.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=524866412 Michelle Bennetts Heumann

Flip flops! I live in Alberta, so they’re definitely summer-only footwear, and I start wearing them as early in the summer as I possibly can. I like painting my toenails fun colours, and there’s no point when no one sees your toes from October to April. :)

  • Mae

I love the free summer concert in the park!!

  • Debbie

I just moved to San Francisco from the east coast and I love going to the farmer’s markets out here.  The strawberries here are unlike anything I have ever had!

Eating Watermelon, and wearing sun dresses and sandals!

  • Elise

I look forward to eating all sorts of ripe fruits and vegetables that are best during the summer and wearing my new platform sandals, which look so cool right now, but will seem silly once it starts to feel like fall again.

  • http://www.superdumbsupervillain.com/ superdumb

I love wearing sundresses in general in the summer, being from the midwest, I can’t get  away with wearing light fabric dresses in the fall, winter, and early spring…. so I almost never wear anything but dresses in the summer :)

  • maria eads

I love when avocados are in season.

  • Allisonm

Last year I got the cutest pair of sandals that allow me to
show my foot tattoo and pedicures. I wear them pretty much EVERY day during the
    summer!!

  • Kate

I live on the east coast so anything open toed is earmarked for summer.  As far as food goes, my go to food for summer is watermelon….yummy!

  • Laura Whitman

I always seem to want to wear blue and red in the summer, swingy and cool skirts and red tank tops. I don’t know why, but it is definitely  a summer thing.

    xoxo,
    Laura

  • Grass_hopper

It snows 4-5 months a year here, so my feet are so happy when I finally get to drag out my flip flops and sandals.  I also love all the fruits available in summer that just aren’t sold (or are but in not appetizing condition) in winter – especially red grapes and nectarines!

  • Physgal

I only drink iced coffee in the summer. Does that count? :-)

I can’t wait to wear my Birkenstock criss-cross strap sandals and showing off my cute piggie polish!

  • Rosemary Nigro

Eat only watermelon in the summer. Love to wear pink or red toenail polish with my summer sandals, especially with painted flowers on my big toes. Wear my Hawaiian blue flowered sundress in the summer. It takes me to church and also doubles as a “robe” when I want something light and airy to sit out on my front porch during summer evenings.

  • Lovestosew

Cute dress, I’m a maxi dress fan, I live in them all sumer long.  I also love being pool side and eating stone fruit (peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines……)

    • Lovestosew

I meant Summer, sorry bad typing, and no proof reading.  This is what happens when I read your blog before I’ve had my coffee.

  • Dksherry

I love the dress, the earrings and the gloss.  I love going out for ice cream on breezy, warm summer nights.  We don’t often get too many of those in Michigan, but I cherish them.  Hopefully my next outing will be with a new dress!!!

  • Tami

The joke in my family is that I can’t cook.  (I can, but maintaining this illusion means that I don’t get asked to cook!)  The only things I make that everyone agrees I do well are potato salad and gelatin beans.  (It’s a mold that makes jelly bean shaped gelatin.)  So, every summer, I make a LOT of potato salad!  :)

  • Shamamapearl

I love love wearing Sun Dresses, strapless fun sun dresses, in almost any color. I feel so feminine in them. And I make my moms potato salad. A must for the family gatherings, my left for heaven, in Jan. of 1998. So, it’s the biggest and best compliment to hear my seven siblings say; Shirley it tastes just like moms! Happy Summer Everyone!

    • Shamamapearl

I meant to say; My mom left for heaven in 1998. Sorry mama, I love you!
      Shirley

  • Jinkatya

Summer? Summer is the time for mangoes and peaches, and delicious fruits that I love. (: Thank goodness for freezing fruit, otherwise I don’t think I could make it through the winter!

  • CrystalN

I look forward to fresh corn on the cob in the summer – frozen or canned just doesn’t compare.  I’m from South Dakota so we get this treat for a very limited time!

  • Barb

I don’t cook or bake inside during the summer as I dont have AC.  Instead I make various combinations of salads, salsas, and non-cooked soups.  I highly recommend throwing some corn in your salad, especially if you are using a bitter green.

  • Emily

Peaches & watermelon! You can get them other times of the year, but they’re really only good in the summer.  :)

  • Bluewhitewear

I love berries! Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries!  Cannot eat enough of them. For happy hour – ice cold beer!

  • Bebo

sitting outside with the water misters on while hanging out with family and friends!

  • Megan L.

Being a student (and future teacher), I always look forward to sleeping in during summer!  Also, back in the day, we always did our school supply shopping in the summer and I think it was my absolute favorite thing to do all year, in spite of swimming and popsicles and fireworks and all the other fun summer things we always did :)

  • CourtneyB

My favorite summer shoes are my Naughty Monkey hot pink and chartreuse peep-toe heels with the hot pink patent heart around the toe. I’ve tried to make them work during the winter, but they’re determined to be my late spring/summer shoes only.

  • CK

Summer is my favorite season! I always look forward to eating popsicles, staying outside with a glass of wine after it cools off from a hot day, and forgoing pants for shorts, skirts, and dresses for a few months.

  • Laura

Sometimes when it gets unbearably hot out I’ll have a bag of jerky and some fruit for supper.

  • Kim

I love watermelons, berries, and peaches, and summertime BBQ’s! Walking around in shorts and letting the heat get the best of me, and I do something drastic like cut my hair really, really short. Good times.

  • Ctstrong

it’s not summer in indiana without the 4h fair, my kids are finally ready to enter projects. my daughters made their first elastic waist skirts! they loved picking out their own fabric, but stitching straight seams was harder than they expected. still they are proud to see them on display and to get ideas for next years projects.

  • Storyteller Mary

Summer fruit, berries, watermelon, peaches, and now that I have a CSA share, fresh farm veggies in quantity!  Watching birds, frogs, rabbits, woodchucks outside my door is fun, too.

  • haleybaily97

my two piece swimsuit! I’m a swimmer, and my normal training suit is this thick poly-lycera blend type thing – it gives me unreal tan lines. My belly is about 4 shades lighter than my arms and legs.

  • Hokie@Heart

Watermelon is the best summertime fruit!!  Always brings back happy memories of family get-togethers.

  • http://colorfilled.blogspot.com/ Babs Loyd

Watermelon in any form is my summertime-taste treat. On vacation, we spotted a sign for a Watermelon Shake and had to have it. Now, I freeze WM chunks, then add about 1 cup of them to morning smoothies with almond milk and a 6 oz. vanilla yogurt. The icy chunks of WM taste yummy and jolt me awake too!
Our afternoon treat when I was a kid was watermelon, a Black Diamond one grown at my grandmother’s farm. They are hard to find now, but it was fun to roll one out from under her porch and cut it open to share with the family. We sometimes added salt from a shaker.

  • Darsedee28

I only eat steak from the grill in the summer. I mean at home anyways. Burgers are the same.  beef doesn’t taste right unless from the grill!

  • Barbara

    Watermelon. :)

  • Marissa Willerick

I don’t really like watermelon, and a lot of people think I’m crazy, but I look forward to eating potato salad all year!

  • Kristina

    Going to the beach!

  • Christine in Texas

MMMM watermelon! Seed fight! Love it! Great for Texas,s HOT HOT weather!

  • Melissastillman

I love eating watermelon in the summer! And on the fashion front, I tend to wear a lot more sea-inspired jewelry: starfish, seahorse, sand dollars, etc. Thanks!
