Look how, er, colorful this two piece is!!  Saige was gracious to send it all my way!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before2 - 95

Matching top & bottom!

Marisa – I think with your vision and talent this fabric has the potential to become something really cute.  Enjoy!  It belonged to an acquaintance’s mom and was about to be donated until I snatched it up!

Day - 95

Look at the gloriousness of this two piece?!  I am obsessed with the most deliciously colorful print though!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Before - 95

Peekaboo!

I will start off with the fact that both pieces will most definitely NOT be worn together by me!  Today we attack the skirt!!

I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the skirt when I saw this piece.  The fabric and the colors are amazing and I just needed to have a sundress made out of it!

I began by opening up the side seam at the waist panel up top!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Seam Ripper - 95

Undoing waist seams!

The waist was only a little bit big on me, so instead of taking out the old elastic and readding some new elastic to make it fit better, I just skipped that first step and added new elastic on top of what was there already.  The original elastic was pretty much all sewn in, so keeping it in place cut out mucho extra work.

From my stash, I took some navy textured elastic…

Some interior waist additions!

…added a safety pin to one end…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - New Elastic - 95

Woo, waist ties!

…and guided it through the seam!!  Once the elastic was in, instead of trimming the ends and sewing in place, I just left the ends hanging.  Next, I stitched the top and bottom of the waist band closed keeping the center open.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Sewing Machine - 95

Stitchy Stitch!

I’m going to use that elastic as a drawstring, so I cinched to fit at my chest and tied a fab bow at the end.  I took a fun 80s belt, a vintage gold tassel necklace, and my gold shades and was ready for the lovely day!!

Look how clear the sky is?!

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Finished Dress - 95

Day 95 - After

Just kidding :)   That’s no real sky, just the fab sky backdrop at Paramount.  I was totally standing on this ledge while two tours were passing by on golf carts.  (Sorry tour guests…I’m not one of the cast mates of Glee or Community which actually shoots here, I’m just sneaking up on a ledge to take a pic without getting caught by security!!)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Backdrop - 95

Sike...Truman Show backdrop!

It’s funny because I met a friend for lunch at the commissary today, but back in college I did tons of extra work right there on Stage 14 for none other than Sabrina, The Teenage Witch!  (That show happened to always shoot on Fridays and Friday was the one day I planned my class schedule around to have off, so girlfriends and I made some extra cash being ‘high school students’ in the background every once in a while.)

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Paramount - 95

PS, Top Gun was shot here too!

My gal RN and I talked wedding for a bit (she gets married a day before my birthday in October!!) while drinking Snapples and eating sushi.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - M&R - 95

Lunchtime Pals!

After taking my hair out me bun, I had the most perfect Veronica Lake-ish wave on my left side!  I was so pleased that I had to document before the wind blew it out of control.

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Sunny Shot - 95

Sunny Shot!

PS, pockets up top like this…I’m liking the above the waist pouch action!!

clever. recently did something similar to a knit slightly gathered aline skirt.
I am so curious to know if this was a hand sewn two-piecer??

  • Storyteller Mary

Could you post a clip of you in Sabrina?  It would be fun!

    • newdressaday

Ha, I have to find it!  VHS episodes are hidden somewhere – must keep my eyes peeled for it!!

  • http://www.wom-mom.com/ Wom Mom Ethne

These colors are awesome!  I can’t begin to guess what you’ll do with the jacket.  Hopefully soon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hidesama Ren Akuma

What does it say about me, that my first thought was taking in the jacket, shortening the skirt, and wearing it as a super-groovy suit for a Friday at the office which turns into happy hour and clubbing?? :/ Because, that would totally rock… Now I want a floral print suit!
I make long skirts into dresses all the time though, so I approve of this version :P I like making mine empire waist – that way, I can pig out as much as I want and my tummy won’t show, my boobs look huge, and it’s super flattering in general…

  • http://friendsandfinds.blogspot.com/ Kath

That print makes a fabulous sun dress!

  • Shrav

    Wow..from drab to fab!

  • Judy B.

Once again, from hideous to beautiful!

  • Saige

Yay!!  I’m so glad you were able to use it, you worked magic once again – I want that sundress for myself!!!  Can’t wait to see what you do with the jacket!

    • newdressaday

I loved this piece S!!  Can’t wait to tackle part 2!! xx

  • Keenzi

Fun fabric and remake! You could have done a fun peekaboo gif with your new skills, though. : )

  • Dawn

Wow what a great remake, it makes such a cute sun dress.

  • Disneychick1980

Oooo Another favorite! I am in love with the bright colors!

  • Elrohiril

That awful two piece made a fabulous sundress!

  • Jennifermg7

OMG I have a jacket in all these colors plus orange and SEQUINS……….no I have never worn it, it was a must-have thrift find (like many of yours perhaps?) “just because it was mind boggling”

    • newdressaday

This plus sequins???  You’ve got to turn that into something amazing :)   Take pics!

  • Ashettles

That turned out beautiful. A great idea for my soon to be daughter-in-law.

  • Liz

    love the transformation :)

  • Lovestosew

I love that belt, very Wonder Woman!  Great remake, I can’t wait to see what you do with the jacket.

    • newdressaday

That is a total WW belt – one of my fave thrifted ones.  Super 80s!!

      • Lovestosew

I really like it.  Every girl should get to feel like a super hero, every now and then.

  • viviann

Wow, how’d you get the gig as an extra in the show?! I intern on the Paramount lots and would love to be an extra just to see what goes behind-the-scenes for a show!

    • newdressaday

Check out Central Casting :) We signed up there and basically called in when we were available to get put on shows.  Extra $$, albeit not a ton, but awesome on set experience!

  • holly

    brilliant, in all ways

  • Jbhundley

I like that you have so many friends and that you include them in your blog and photos. I especially enjoyed seeing them in the recent wedding you attended in lavender dress with grandmother’s pendant on chains. I am sure your girlfriends are inspired by your creativity!

    • newdressaday

Aww, thank you.  I have such a great west coast family of friends out here and they’re part of my daily life.  I’m just glad they all don’t mind being photographed all the time :)

  • Lauraly

    Nice transformation!

  • Sue

I have to admit that until I saw your redo, I was kind of in too much color overload… and I like color. :)

The sundress is absolutely adorable. Another terrific redo.

  • Gerlinde

Brilliant; I’d even think of some sort of ‘double use’ of the jacket part yet have to think how to convert it into a long AND short version to wear!
(Might take some heavy brainstorming and plenty of elbow grease)

  • Allison Woods

I love the fabric. I love the dress. You did a great job. I was going to lavish you with praise until I saw the last slide.

Please get rid of those silly pockets–you have a great dress here otherwise.

    • DinaB

The great thing about the pockets is that they are hidden. You couldn’t even tell they were there until M pointed then out! It’s a safe place to hide your phone, keys or a small wallet for your credit cards. Wild pockets to go with the wild print!

  • Meghan_Elizabeth

    it looks so great!!!

    • newdressaday

      Thank you ME!! xo

  • Cathryn

I loved Sabrina, too.  I thought her aunts were awesome. I grew up with Bewitched and would wiggle my finger like Tabitha to try to levitate objects!

  • http://rtthvintage.blogspot.com/ Sara

This is great – can’t believe anyone ever wore the original! O.o

  • Sarah Latchem

That is an awesome remake and I love that you were an extra in Sabrina, I loved that show!

  • KimboTron5000

    Best. Remake. Ever.

  • Cre8soap

Hello- I like the remake …..summer is here….! You looked great.

  • Laura

I’m not gonna lie I had my doubts when I seen the doozy of a before shot but it came out wonderful, is there anything you can’t fix.

  • Bec

Oh WOW!! I LOVE it!!!! awesome job

  • Honeybiezs

    Loveliest fabric ever!!

    Hugs from the Philippines =)
