103 Days to Go: Andrea’s Donation

Jul 9, 2012 | 83 Comments

I received this gorgeous piece from Andrea in Brooklyn a little while back and finally got to getting it wear worthy!

Hi Marisa!

I was cleaning out my closet when I came across this dress I bought on eBay years back.  I love the cotton material, the colors, and the vintage-type, stripe/floral design.  At the time, it reminded me of a summer episode of Sex in the City!  The top part is tight on me and I was originally going to make it into a skirt but since I do not have any time to work on it, I am passing it along to you as I know it will be in good hands!  Enjoy!  Take care and happy sewing! Andrea

I was crushing hard on this fabric.  Check it out!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Floral - 103

Day 103 - Before

I can totally see this pattern and style of dress being something Carrie Bradshaw would have rocked, similar to this vintage piece Patricia Field outfitted her in below…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Sex and the City - Carrie Bradshaw - Summer Dress

Carrie & Miranda Summer Dressing!

Small problemo (and the same one as Andrea)…too tight!!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Too Tight - 103

Uh oh!!!!!

I just couldn’t get that zipper pulled up and had to come up with a plan.  Guess what?  I came up with a plan :)

First part of the plan…tweak the top area that’s too tight!  I began to remove the stitches in the seams on each side of the body from right below the arm holes down to the waist.  This back panel of fabric is going to be completely removed.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Seam Removal at Sides - 103

Removing seam at the sides!

The left side of the body had the zipper attached…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Zipper - 103

This won't zip!!

…so I continued removing stitches, detaching the back panel from the zipper.  I’m keeping the zipper in place at the moment because I’m still going to be using the bottom portion of it, up to the waist seam.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Detach Zipper - 103

Won't be too tight for too long!

With the sides of the back panel open on the left and right side of the body, my next step was to fix the zipper.  Like I said above, I want to keep the bottom part of the zipper intact so I marked how high I wanted the zipper to go, folded it under at this spot, and hand stitched the ends.  The stitches will act as new stops so that the slide and pull doesn’t come off at the end!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Fold Down Zipper - 103

Stitch down zipper!

I hit the shoulders next and removed the seams keeping the back panel attached on each side.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Seam Removal at Shoulder - 103

Removing the back from the front!

Now the entire back panel is open on all three sides!  I created a new seam at the waist and pinned it in place as I’ll be sewing it down shortly.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - New Seam at Back - 103

New soon-to-be open back!

Now the back isn’t going to be completely open.  Inspired by the elastic backed dresses from ASOS

…and Mason by Michelle Mason

…I wanted to take this the elastic route!!  I snagged some thick white elastic…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Elastic- 103

Elastic!!!

…and dyed it to a lovely lavender shade to match the dress.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - RIT Dye & Salt - 116

Dye!!!

With my newly dyed elastic I made two panels to cross the back horizontally and pinned them in place to prep for sewing.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Pinned Elastic - 103

New back!!

I worked on the shoulder area next!  I’m making this a halter-ish top so I pinched and cinched the fabric at the shoulders…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Cinched Shoulder - 103

Cinch the ends!

…took some navy elastic ribbon…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Seam Removal at Shoulder - 103

Navy elastic!

…and hand stitched the end of the elastic to the cinched shoulder area.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Stitching Elastic - 103

Halter Straps!

With both shoulder areas finished, I stitched the lavender elastic panels to the right side of the back of the dress…

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Stitched in Place - 103

Stitched down elastic!

…and then stitched the new seam at the waist.

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - More Stitching in Place - 103

Back seam complete!

Because the elastic was only connected to the dress on the right side, I took hook and eye closures and similar to the back of a bra, added two hooks to each elastic strip and the coordinating eyes to the left side of the fabric to hold the elastic in place.

I was finally finished with the piece!!  From too tight, to just right!!

New Dress a Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - After Shot - 103

Day 103 - After

I pretty much fell in love with the back of the dress.  A bit tedious to tackle all the steps, but ultimately super easy to complete.

From behind!

My vintage navy Candies always seem to come in handy!!

Whirling Dervish!

Fun summery dress for weekend hangs.

Andrea, thank you so much for sending this my way.  I had so much fun wearing it!!

I think you did a great job on this–and I appreciate that you’re doing more work to make the final product more finished. I just can’t help wondering if the length needs some tweaking.  At first I thought that the top of the halter going into the blue ribbon was a bit clunky, but after looking at it, it went (in my mind) from clunky to funky. I like it.

    …but shouldn’t it be shorter?

  • Sharn

Wow! My most favourite ever! LOVe it! Perfect.

  • http://arainparade.blogspot.com/ Monica

I love it! That’s a great way to deal with too tight tops… it will definitely come in handy! Thanks Marisa!

    • newdressaday

It’s such an easy way to modify things that are too tight.  It was also totally comfortable :)

  • Kissem37

Lot of work, but well worth the effort! That fabric is just ridiculously cute and I love what you’ve done with this. The back is fantastic- I’m going to keep this trick in mind…

  • Anne Rimler

Wow!  Really nice job.  Well done!

  • Paola

Love it!  This is my favorite piece yet.  I’m so glad you didn’t turn it into a skirt because I love the neckline.  What you did was inspired!  It is so cute and modern.

  • Elisha

What a creative fix!  I love it!  I am so impressed with this.  It seems like it took a long time, but it was worth it!

  • Vanessawhiteny

Fantastic!!! You changed it completely and it came out fabulous! :)

  • zah

one of my favorites of yours, marisa! love the dyed elastic and the thought and time you put into this! can’t wait for your book. i’m moving soon to Florida where I don’t know a soul (besides my fiance, of course), and I think my first social outing will be to join a sewing class so I can start re-making some of my own tired New England clothes into Florida-weather ready staples!  Thanks for making my morning cup of coffee interesting.

    • newdressaday

You should absolutely join a sewing class in FL!!  Insta-friends for sure.  PS, I love New England but you’re going to be summering it up 365 now!!

  • Devyn Beth

What a perfect fix.. this is the first thing I’ve seen that has been too small for you, I’ve always wondered how to make something little fit!

    • Cathryn

Devyn Beth: Yes, this should be a great inspiration to all the women who have been asking about what to do with dresses that are too small.

      Marisa: Genius.

  • Meowzers02

    My all time favorite!

  • Amanda Davis

SO CUTE!   And your version is so much classier than that $407 street walker number, lol……

  • Karenclark508

It turned out FANTASTIC!  The dyed elastic matched beautifully, the halter fits perfect, the length is great where it is.  I would wear this in a heartbeat!  Wonderful job, Marisa!

    • newdressaday

       Thank you, thank you Karen!!

  • Terri

No! to those who thought it should be shorter.  I love this.  I do think it’s my favorite ever! Dyeing elastic — who’d a thunk it?

    • newdressaday

      Thank you Nikki!!

  • Tanya S.

Wow. Now I know what to do with the top of a dress I love that doesn’t *quite* fit. Yay!

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

Add me to the “wow” group! This seemed more complicated than some of your revisions, and so worth it!

  • Keenzi

Woah, this is way ore involved than many of your recent revisions, but cool to see the transformation!

  • Sarah_H.

Bravo! I am so glad you have decided to show us a more ambitious project. Very involved, yes, but such a great sundress!! I would love to see more like this!

  • Kathya

A great summer dress.  I can’t help but think that elastic across the back will be sooooo hot, sticky and generally uncomfortable. Otherwise you have hit another home run with a more complicated project.

    • http://arainparade.blogspot.com/ Monica

au contraire, I think the elastic will be cooler than sweat-soaked, stuck-to-you cotton. however, either way air will be able to flow between the elastic bands and just generally leaves more back open to stay cool.

  • http://www.thatuncomfortableitch.com/ Heather C

Love, love, love this one! I’m not a big dress wearer, but this would inspire anybody to wear a dress!

  • Noriko

This is gorgeous, one of my favorite pieces that you’ve done!

  • JLT

Genius- dying your elastic to match!  Not sure why that never dawned on me before, I always lamented the lack of color choices in by-the-yard elastic.  This refashion is hands down one of my favorites from you!

    • newdressaday

Yay, so glad JLT!!  Dyeing elastic is SO easy too…

  • Gamarho

  • Physgal

This one is very cute. WTG!

  • Lovestosew

The  ASOS and  Mason by Michelle Mason dresses look cheap and a bit call girlsish.  I was worried when I saw that they were your inspiration.  Your’s however, is very cute.  Any girl would would love to wear it.  It fits really well and has sex appeal while still leaving something to the imagination.  Well done!

  • Mrs. Victory

Very Carrie Bradshaw!!! Love it. Very innovative.

    Love, love, LOVE!

  • Shylomicorizon

I love this!!!  I got sick a while ago and have had to be on some pretty heavy medications (chemo for one) and with that came less physical activity… unfortunately one of the side affects was weight gain.  Now instead of feeling bad about myself for not being able to fit into my clothes, I have a new idea on how to make them fit me instead!  Thank you for taking the time on this one, I really think I can use the directions you gave and make it my own. =)  Best so far!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Serena-Bramble/797253253 Serena Bramble

I really love this one because so often you use pieces too big for you, and now you show it can go the other way. Love it!

  • Julia

That’s fantastic! I adore the back. I need to try something like this!

  • Chrystalgypsey

I would love to see more makeovers like this, where you take something that’s too small and make it fit better!  Love this makeover!

  • MzHannah

Not in love with this one. Maybe the navy elastic should have been a tad wider or the bodice connected to the elastic should have been cut and shaped more to meet the elastic a little smoother.Or you should have used straps in self fabric. Like the print and the back.

  • A_jay30

Just getting back from vacation and had to catch up on all your posts.  I think this one is my favorite by far.  Absolutely adorable with a chic twist :-)
