110 Days to Go: $1 Remake

Jul 2, 2012 | 33 Comments

Today’s dress was pretty much in stellar condish.  It fit well, was made of a thick brocade material, had awesome pockets in the center…three key ingredients for awesomeness!

Day 110 - Before

I wanted to give it a little more character and a little extra punch before I was going to wear it, so I turned to a brand new friend…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - Yudu Screen Printer - 110

Screen Printer Time!

Hello Yudu screen printer!!  This was the final piece that I crafted with Sonya Nimri during our crafternoon – she is a screen printing guru, has all the supplies, and was ready to give me a lesson.

Time to give this dress some Flavor Flav!!

We began with a screen that came from Sonya’s collection.  Flowers, flowers, and more flowers!

Floral Screen!

I was sorting through all the fun paints and came down to three potential winners.  Yellow, fuchsia, and turquoise!  I was playing around with which one I liked best…

Hmm, what color to choose?!

…and ended up choosing the fuchsia!!  We lined the dress up underneath the screen where we wanted the flowers to be, squirted about two lines of paint on top of the design…

Pink Wins!!

…used a squeegee type tool to force the paint through the screen a few times…

Rollin over screen!

…and ended up with an amazing painted stencil!

One flower down!

We continued this process a few times…

Repeat the process!

…until we got just the right amount of flowers onto the dress.

Dry time!

We let the piece dry overnight and ended up with an awesomely, reinvented garment!  This piece was found at the bottom of a pile for a dollar too, which always makes me smile!!

I had a bridal shower to attend and thought this would be just the right dress to match the gorgeous, summery-colored invites!

Pretty Invites!

PS, The above invite is just the sample from the website.  I obviously didn’t attend a shower in NY on Sept. 15, 2012…unless there’s some Back to the Future business going on that I’m not privy to yet.  Doc?

I think I did a lovely little matching job…

New Dress A Day - DIY - Vintage Dress - After Dress - 110

Day 110 - After

The day was all about RN, who happens to be one of the coolest people around, and was a lovely, backyard, brunchy, affair. I saw a place card with “Marissa” on it and thought there was just a typo in my name.  Nope, there was actually a “Marissa” who was sat right next to me.  I know what you’re all thinking…we totally got sat at the cool name table!!

Marissa & Marisa

We enjoyed savory goodness (eggs and some sort of ridiculous cheesy-potato melange) before we got to the gift opening with the B2B.

Oh and there was definitely no lack of the sweet treats either.  Hello cupcakes!!!

Tower O'cupcakes!

I took my randomly chosen cupcake that in no way was handpicked to match my dress and devoured it, fondant bow first.

Matching Cupcake!

It was a wonderful afternoon to be part of a group of new friends and already established friends sharing love and excitement for a special gal in all of our lives.

Ready for a kickline!!

I’m newly, yet highly addicted to screen printing too now!  I cannot wait to get my hands on my own machine to try out more colors, different fabrics, and other garments.  This is just the beginning friends :)

More weekend fun coming tomorrow…

nice and fresh for attending a shower!  love the cupcakes too.

  • Anna Puddles

love it, I liked the dress before but you really added some zing

    • newdressaday

      I love the zing!!

      • Sonya

Love it Marisa!  Great event too.  I guess that means you’re all out of projects you did with me;)  Got a boat load of clothes from the east so let’s craft again soon!

  • DinaB

This one turnd out really great! When I saw it layed out on the washer I wasn’t so sure, but when you modeled the finished product ….. WOW how cool it turned out. Fuchsia was the perfect choice too.
Congrats to the new Bride to be :~)

  • Sarah_H.

It worked out great! I have always wanted to try this too. Never did.

  • Kissem37

Really fun- I love the way the vibrant screen print looks next to the muted upholstery look of the original design. I’ve considered getting myself one of those bad boys to make prints to cover up all the stains my 3 kids (and messy hubby) get all over themselves :/

  • Btejkl

So pretty. I liked the before and loved the after.

  • Tracie

Just wondering if you also did the back of the dress?  That would be cute also.  Very pretty

    • newdressaday

I just did the front actually… I want to try some layering and using different colors next time!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hidesama Ren Akuma

    nnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooo that gorgeous brocade ;-;

  • Judy B.

Very cute. I don’t think it would have occurred to me to try the printing on top of the brocade, but it worked out. I also love the colors in the group shot–the bride-to-be’s dress, the one with the horizontal stripes, the red . . . .

    • newdressaday

Lots of fun patterns and colors for sure!!

  • Busywoman2

I liked it before and I was surprised that I liked it after, although I would have worn the before and not the after.. I’d have totally gone 60s retro with white boots and poofy hair..

  • holly

Wow, looking at the first image of the flower print I thought “this isn’t going to end well” but you proved me wrong.  This one is such a clever upgrade.

  • Lindasews

Perfect. You look like a 1965 college girl, complete with the bracelets and low heels.

  • G-ma

    No… Sorry. :(

  • G-ma

    No… Sorry. :(

  • Allison Woods

I’m sad that you destroyed the before, but since you did, I don’t think you took the screen printing far enough. Also, lose the pockets. Argh!!

  • Lauraly

I loved the original dress, just needed a little tweaking. And I loved the screen printing, but not together. Excellent try though! You have guts, Marissa!

  • Debjdarby

Cute! I wonder what it would look like if the screen print were in navy blue or just another pastel…not quite such a surprise.

  • Joeysgal

very daring. couldnt think which color you would choose, but it worked. yes to losing the pockets, and ditch the dull footwear. white would have been nice. but im not a trend setter, just didnt like that color.

  • Dandi

Ew. No…just no. That’s terrible. Why would you do that?!

  • Chrystalgypsey

Good job Marisa!  That looks like a high-end/couture dress!  Love how you printed over a pocket too :-)

  • Angela

I’ve wondered this before, but I don’t think I’ve asked…is there ever anything you do and don’t show us?  Not things for the book, but something you’ve tried and have gone, “wow, that’s a big no, did not work out the way I wanted and I am NOT going to wear it.  Back to the machine tomorrow!” or would you rewear everything you’ve done?  Sometimes I cook a new recipe and I’m glad I tried it, but I don’t save left overs and I know I’m not going to make it again…get what I’m asking?

  • Sara

You are so bold!! I love the creativity put into this dress. You rock it, girl! It looks fab. :)

  • Bjohnson8589

This is probably my favorite one you’ve ever done! I love it so much! Great job.

  • Jen

Looks like a great fun day with the girls! I love the bride-to-be’s dress. Any idea what store it’s from?

  • Kate M

    cute cupcakes and cute dress!

  • Trisha

lovin’ this style – i actually bought a little black dress that had this type of pattern in fuchsia and white, but instead of being an all over print, it just ran on the right-hand side of the dress.

  • Katie

This might be your best remake…. so so super cute and simple!! Love it and love your site!

  • Lovestosew

Love those pops of color.  Vey cool, did you do the back of the dress, too?

  • Kari

    I loveeee this!!
