113 Days to Go: Copycat – J Crew

Jun 29, 2012 | 30 Comments

Today’s J Crew copycat post was another part of my day o’crafting that I had with Sonya Nimri!  After tackling some neon jewelry, we went the shoe route!

We came across these amazing oxfords in the J. Crew catalog created by Creatures of the Wind and immediately knew we wanted to try our hand at them!

J Crew Copycat!

We started with these lovely thrifted kicks!  They’re super cute as is, however there were some scuffs and just normal wear n’tear on the outside of them making them perfect to work with.

Day 113 - Before

The J Crew shoes are oxfords, but we’re taking the essence of those flats and transferring them over to these heels!  Time to get paintin’ and gluin’ and glitterin’!

We began by taping stripes on the shoes with masking tape.  This is mostly just to mark the spaces that will be painted and glued.  On the J. Crew pair, the different colored sections were separated by stitching, however we used the tape to make it work on our end!

Next, we started to paint!!  We wanted to incorporate similar colors into our shoes so we used some mint, orange and charcoal colored fabric paint that works on many surfaces!

Painted Heel!

The heel got painted, and the mint came next before adding the orange last.  We let the shoes dry…

Watching paint dry...

…and then started the gluing process!  We removed the tape and then added Fabric Fusion to the leftover tan areas of the shoes…the glitter is going to go in these spots!!

Time to glue!!

Once the glue was set, we started to apply the gold glitter!!  Wam, bam, thank you ma’am!!

Sooo cute! Now I want to go paint all my shoes!!

  • Sue kol

I like yours better than the original! Will the paint stay even if the shoes get wet?

    • Sonya Nimri

We used acrylic fabric paint and sprayed an acrylic sealer on afterwards. Should stay in a light drizzle.

  • Sarah_H

What a great eye for color placement! I love these.

  • Colleeniec

You could probably modge podge over all of it to ensure that the paint and glitter will stay. What kind of paint did you use?

    Love them!

  • JAlex

Wow, I was seriously doubting this at first but I am super surprised! I actually like these better than the J Crew ones! I am curious as to what kind of paint you used? Acrylic? Very cute!

  • Tollyfaye

    Love ‘em! Blingtastic!

  • Lauraly

    Cute!

  • Keenzi

Fun! Agree with others that I like it better on the heels than the oxfords.

These are so adorable! For those of us who are sewing challenged, this is totally doable. Thanks!

  • Rowdycat2222

    LOVE THEM!

  • Shandee

I’ve done this, and more, with old shoes… love it! I’ve covered them in fabric, piping, cut pieces out, glued on rhinestones, repainted them, and all around butchered them. And the result is always something fun and unique!

  • Erin_c_hawkins

This is a weird question but how do you sanitize used/thrifted shoes? I understand if they haven’t been worn before and are on sale, but I can’t hardly stomach putting my foot in someone else’s old shoes. I know that’s strange, but I see a lot of cute shoes out there that have been previously worn, yet I pass on them because not sure how to clean them. Any thoughts, lol? Love everything you do! Thx!

    • Mrs. Victory

I would guess you can use Clorox Wipes or Lysol wipes or a light solution of bleach water on a paper towel. Afterward you can spray some sort of foot spray in them if you are really worried.

You could also use a Dr. Scholl’s insert in the foot bed…they make them for heels, too.

  • Cathryn

OMG. I have to paint some shoes.

  • Tracie

Very cute.  Cathryn, spray them with lysol that kills 99% of germs.

  • Mrs. Victory

    Look at you! Very thrifty.

  • Mmoldrem

    I love. Totally doin’ it.

  • Lovestosew

    Love, love, love!

  • Allison Woods

    They look VERY homemade, unfortunately.

  • Sara

Spunky, funky fresh. I’m diggin it!

  • Connie

This is the BEST thing you have ever done – I love the shoes.   Keep up the GREAT work.
