116 Days to Go: $1 Remake

Jun 26, 2012 | 25 Comments

So the photo that I had pulled from this dress that I’ve had hanging on my rack for months ended up not being correct.  Of course – I saw ruffles and a floral pattern and thought I had it when in fact I never shot the piece!  Party foul, Maris!

To give you a complete idea of what this piece looked like before, I found two PERFECT dresses that would most definitely work for a ‘If They Mated’ segment a la Conan O’Brien.  (Here’s a vintage clip…)

The dress basically looked like this except it was knee length and cotton.  There was sheer lace in a V shape, cascading ruffles with lace trim, and more ruffles at the bottom of the piece with lace trim.  Pretty much this in a nutshell…

Little mix of this...

…with a floral pattern like below.

Little mix of that...

Basically a shortened version of #1 with the pattern of #2.  Got it?  Feel prepared?  Let’s finish it up!

I began with some dye!  I liked the pattern on the dress but I was ready to liven up the rest of the piece – the lace, all the trim, the ribbon.  I started a hot water wash, grabbed RIT Dye in Purple along with some salt, and began my dye bath.

Salt N'Dye!

Before I added my dress to the full washing machine, I brought it to my sink and wet it completely.  This step helps with even dye distribution!

Mmm Purple!

After the dress was all pretty and purple, I trimmed the crinoline that was underneath the piece.  No tulle for me today!

Just a little too much pouff!

I had some leftovers that will work for any ballet costume or recital now!  (Time to get back into classes!)

Who needs a tutu!!

Now it was time to attack the lace.  I liked the hints of lace on the dress, but there was just too much going on.  I started removing bits here and there…

Lace Removal!

…first at the edges of the ruffles at the top of the dress, then at the ruffles at the bottom of the dress.

Lace up top!

I had lots of lace leftover!!

Just some of the trimmings!

Also the more I looked at the sheer lace V up top, the less I liked it.  It felt a little too costumey, so I trimmed this area out and used the V as my guide as I trimmed along.

After all the color changing and lace removal, I had a super pretty purple dress!

Day 116 - After

I think the lessening of the lace made it feel a little more everyday – a little more boho/less Dolly Parton/like something you could find at Urban Outfitters.

From the back!

I loved that the hint of the floral pattern still peeks through the purple too!

I'm taking you down Boston Creme Pie cupcake!!

It was such a comfortable dress to wear out and about…

Like the remake but think removing that last bit of lace from the bottom would still be a plus.  Love the purple color on you.  and the cupcake looks delish!

  • Breanna

I thought you were crazy, deciding to dye the dress purple when it already had a pattern but it looks great!

So pretty–I love the purple dye! My husband and I looked all over Morocco for dye that color, and finally found some to bring home to his mom. I’m secretly hoping she’ll use it to make some ombre curtains for us!

    • newdressaday

Ooh, ombre curtains in that shade will be gorgeous!

  • Yaelwald

funny, you look like tinkerbell! :)

aw, that dress looks like a cute cupcake also xD maybe a lavender cupcake with like, a caramel center and a lilac-colored buttercream frosting on top. Errr don’t mind my food analogies, I’m hungry. xD
Not sure if I’d pair it with those shoes though, they seem a bit harsh for it?

  • Allison M.

That is too cute!! I loved the Conan video also! :)

  • Chrystalgypsey

I love how the different materials of the dress take the dye differently; it’s a surprise to see how the dye-job turns out!

  • Judy B.

Very pretty–love the floral pattern + dye.

Man, that’s gorgeous. Also, I am coveting the lace.

I’m in a vaudeville show (the Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue) and we give away a garter every night in the show. Our seamstress makes the garters, but she can’t find the right kind of lace anywhere in town right now!! It’s a lace crisis. We only have enough garters to last another week. I might have to start trimming off the bottoms of my old slips or something…

    • newdressaday

Alert, alert, lace crisis!!!! Ooh, that’s an awesome call!! I’d cruise to thrift stores to score some slips/camis to use the lace. PS, your vaudeville show sounds amazing!

  • Janet DiVincenzo

You are just one of those people on whom everything looks great!

  • Allison Woods

    Hmmm.

  • Ashettles

I think it is beautiful and it looks so fun.

    That dress is delightful.

Definitely feeling a Tangled vibe… love it!!

  • Angel2j

Ummm…I usually LOVE your stuff, but this one ended up…just…no.
Sorry, hun.  I’m glad you like it.  Maybe it’s because it reminds me of a (super scratchy) dress I wore as a kid in the early 80′s.

  • Lovestosew

Yikes!  The colour is great but I am sorry, I do not like the dress.  You’ve done some amazing pieces that I love, love, love.  This one just isn’t one of them.

  • Noseringirl

My 2 year old said ” This looks like Tangled’s dress!” We love it!!

  • MzHannah

Don’t like it…. AT ALL! It looks very costumey still. It just doesn’t work in my opinion. I’ve seen you turn out some good redos and some really horrible ones. This goes in the bad pile. Not horrible but just bad. The purple was a plus though!

  • MzHannah

And the styling was very off with those shoes an the tan cardi. Very bad

  • DanielleM

That’s so fabulous! It does look like the dress from Tangled! I’m going to have to work this out for Halloween. Great work M!!

  • MelindaB

Was that a Gunnie Sax, not sure I spelt that right? I would hve love to have that dress in jr. high.  I like what you did with it very much. Good job! :)

  • Tasmanian Minimalist

    I love it, steampunk/boho/hippy/goth…

  • Hellen of Troy

Awww the before picture looks like my grandmother’s wedding dress :)
