155 Days to Go: $1 Remake

May 18, 2012 | 34 Comments

It’s accessory Thursday!!  PS, I’ve been so excited about this project!  This was a fab find from Goodwill in Charlotte – it was one of those pay-by-the-pound locations, so this was approx $1.

Day 155 - Before

It was in good condition, but it wasn’t anything I was super excited about as it was, so I decided to give it some early summer lovin’.  Summer lovin’ in this case means neon time!!

I grabbed some amazing animal stencils and began to pull the ones that could get away with being safari-ish.  Giraffe, zebra, a gator of sorts (the gator worked better than the dog…) – I’m covering the bag with animals!

Stencil Party!

I got my safari stencils ready…

Zebra!!

…and gave them a quick spritz of adhesive to keep them stuck to the purse.

Ocean Spray!

I trimmed the stencils and put them in their purse spots.

All stuck!

I’m going to use some spray paint to make my animals and I don’t want paint all over the purse, so I taped the stencils down and covered all the other, non-stenciled space with duct tape.

Love that Duck Brand pink tape!

To prep painting, I took a newspaper, lined it in the grass, added my bag, and began to spray paint my face off!!  Bright, neon-y yellow was the color du jour!

Painting party on my patio!

I painted one side and let it dry for a few hours before spraying the other side.  After letting the whole bag sit for a few more hours to completely dry (for best results, follow the paint instructions) I began the stencil and tape removal!

All painted!

This is the most fun part!  Getting to progressively see how each animal turned out. There’s a snake!

Almost wear time!

My final bag looked like this:

Day 155 - After

I’m totally obsessed!

Stoop clutching!

My neon pink nails matched perfectly.

Neon nails, neon animals!

I’m going to have to rock this with a pink dress soon – like the Gryphon Copycat from a few days ago, you’ll be seeing me using this bag often.  Since I can’t go to the animals, the animals are going to come to me!

  • Btejkl

I super loved the original. The addition of the animals just made it better. Do I recognize the skirt from an earlier redo?

    • newdressaday

You recognize the skirt from my constant wearing – it’s a wrap one I got in good condition when I was thrifting and have been wearing it while working from home :) Good eyes!!

      • Maureen

Love that skirt! Had a few like that myself. My daughter does her shopping in my closet and now owns said skirts :)

I find it interesting that you seem to get so many things for $1, here in the UK the charity shops are much more expensive, a bag with no tears would be at least $4 and dresses would be more. Perhaps that is a good thing if it means that we are throwing away less stuff and more people are happy to buy from a charity shop, but I don’t know if that is the reason. Anyhow it is still worth it to re-make some of the finds (and of course old stuff we already own), and thank you for your many ideas of how to do so!

When I read what you were going to do, I was like – Oh no.  This is going to be awful.

Man was I wrong.  I totally love it!  It turned out awesome.

Hi. I really love your blog, I subscribe to it in my RSS feeder. For the last week, it shows up twice in my reader. No other blogs I follow are having double postings. I just wanted to let you know in case there is something on your end you can do to make it send only once. Thanks.
Love how your purse turned out.

    • newdressaday

So bizarre – looking into that now!  Thanks for the heads up :)

    Such a cute idea!

  • Pmontyda

In about a year and a half — this is the first post I do not like. You ruined a great bag.

  • Sistermidget

This process could also work with a plain color cotton scrub top, couldn’t it? Hmmmm. And, I have a tip to make your next dental cleaning go better: the GUM company makes a little plastic tooth-pick style cleaning tool called Soft Pick, it is amazingly easy to use because of the little “tree” design and can be used in addition to floss or often just in place of floss. Try it, you’ll be much happier in the dental chair next time.

  • Erica @ recycled Fashion

    This is fab, love it

  • Chrystalgypsey

The finished product really looks like a designer bag!  I could totally see something like this on the runway!

  • Lovestosew

  • Lovestosew

    Great idea!  I love this.

  • MzHannah

I like the idea of this bag, just not the execution. It kinda sucks. I would try this on something else.

    nifty

  • Keely0718

I would prefer if there was just a zebra but it’s still a great idea.
