171 Days to Go: Copycat – Anthropologie

May 1, 2012 | 37 Comments

When I first saw this necklace, I was totally obsessed.  I pinned it on Pinterest and knew it would be something I was going to copy.  Today is that day!

New Dress A Day - Copycat - Anthropologie - Love Necklace

Copycat!

I began with two very important ingredients…embroidery floss and wire!

New Dress a Day - Necklace DIY - Love Necklace - Wire and Embroidery Thread - 172

Embroidery Thread & Wire

I went with a 16 gauge wire because I wanted something thick enough to match the Anthro necklace and something that wouldn’t bend on its own.

I took my jewelry pliers and started to bend it like Beckham!!

Wire Wrapping Time!!

After using some elbow grease, my LOVE was formed!

Wire Wrapped LOVE!

I grabbed the embroidery floss and began to wrap, making a knot at the very end of the L loop and weaving around.

Wrap that thread!

I think for the next necklace, wrapping the floss around the wire pre-bending may go faster, however this method didn’t take too long.  I added a dab of glue to the end of the thread to make it stiffer as I weaved it around the letters.

I wanted to make a tassel to match as well, so I took five matching lengths of thread (about three-four inches), weaved them through a jump ring…

Tassel Time!

…and made two knots to keep them in place.

I grabbed the rest of my jewelry making tools (another jump ring and some chain)…

Completion Tools!

…added jump rings to the loop in the L and the loop in the E…

Adding some jump rings...

…and used pliers to close the rings and finish up!  Voila!!

Finito!!

I mean, it looks pretty similar, right?

Anthropologie Love Necklace

Anthropologie Love Necklace - Was just on sale for $30!

The beauty of this kind of necklace is that you can make any word/name you’d like and pick the thread color of your choice!!  I just might make a few other ones next weekend…

Anthropologie Copycat - After

I think my mom may see a preview to what she’s getting for Mother’s Day?!

ECU!!

I was obsessed with the Anthropologie version and now I’m completely obsessed with my version.  Easy, cheap, and very sassy.

How cute. Terrific job as always. :)

  • MzHannah

So cute. I like this a lot and I’m definitely making this. Would it look cute a little bigger and leather chord wrapped??

  • Moxie

Dang girl! I can’t believe how close that looks to the original. Nice work :)

  • Paula

Great Copycat!  it looks exactly like the original.  I think I see this in a near future project for myself!

  • Scarlett McBrayer

    I love it!

  • Vanessa

I love this…and with your chain, like it a lot better than the original.  Plus it’s homemade…perfect! :)

  • ArtisticInAZ

Well done ~ I like the idea of other words, too.  Maybe a name?  Initials?

    • newdressaday

Totally!! Other words/colors/etc would be amazing.

  • Sarah_H

Very cute idea. I’ll bet that wrapping was harder than it looks.

  • Hd112596

    VERY cool!

  • rojopaul

When I first saw what you were doing, I didn’t think I would care for it.  Then I saw what you did and I LOVED it. I actually like your version better too!

BTW, I saw a girl at the Dodger game over the weekend who made a bracelet out of the tabs of soda cans, weaving them together with bright shoelaces (one pink, one green) and then tied them off.  It was adorable!  I thought, “ohh, it’s a mini-Marisa in the making!”

We made all kinds of jewelry in the 70s with pop tabs. They were like daisy chains, but with the pull tabs from soda pop. Of course then the pull tabs weres shaped differently, so you could bend one to tag team onto the other one.

    • newdressaday

Woo!! Love that – I’ve been tossing around ideas crafting some household goodies :)   That might make the list!!

  • elise

this is totally awesome, and your best copy-cat creation yet!

  • Keenzi

This is right up there at the top of your copycat successes, along with the googly-eye Louboutins!

    • Angela

I’m still in awe of those googly-eye shoes…didn’t think I’d actually want them as much as I do!

  • Babs Loyd

You are a wonder. I had names of my dogs (3) done by a wire artist for Christmas. Planned to add them to a stocking each, but did not do it in time. The wrapped wires inspired me, they will be much more colorful. Thanks, clever lady.

  • Jacqueline in Atlanta

You did a fabulous job! I might have spray painted the wire after completion. But that’s probably because I’m lazier than you. Love it, just love it. Your “love” looks just like theirs. You are amazingly talented. Keep up the good work and keep inspiring (not to mention entertaining) the rest of us!

    • newdressaday

Ooh, good call too – spray paint works for sure!

  • Jek

I usually feel as though most of Anthropologie’s jewelry has simple DIY potential. I’ve tried my hand before and had great results. All you have to do is check their accessories for inspiration!

  • Chenderson141

    Love this!!!

  • Sewfun53-shopper

Very awesome!!!!! SOOO glad your site can take comments now. LOVE this site and LOVE your gumption…..been sewing for 47 years and I get lots of inspiration from you!!!

  • Kathleen P.

I’m obsessed with jewelry and I think that I will definitely make one of these myself. Love it!!!

  • Jessica in Portland

I am absolutely stopping by the craft store on my way home to get some 16 gauge wire!  Adorable Miss M! I love copying something to make it my own or change the one thing about it that makes it mine… I heart how you made the tassel on the jump ring… having it hanging off the bent tab end of the word would bug me.

  • N2059P

other than the sort of chintzy looking chain you chose, i think you did a good job copying it.

  • elle w

a very cool use of embroidery thread

  • darsedee

    super fun!

  • Megan

    You are soooo talented

  • courtneyb65

You could have saved a lot of time by using plastic coated wire, and you could do other words in other colors of wire, which is what the original looks like it may be, but I think the embroidery floss covered wire is so much classier.

  • Laura

so cute I think I like yours better
