Week 2: Sarah & Tracey

Apr 16, 2012 | 47 Comments

Today’s offering was a joint sent which I love!

Dear Marisa – Recently my friend Tracey was given several HUGE bags of clothes to do with as she wished, and graciously shared them with me.  Since very little of the clothing was in either of our sizes, most of it was ravaged :) for material, buttons, etc.  We enjoyed laughing at the horrendousness of many of the pieces, and in the midst of our laughter I said to her, “Actually I know this woman who takes pieces like these and…” and told her about your blog, which of course we immediately had to look up on her computer :)

The yellow house dress (at least that’s what it MIGHT be!), I have to admit, is coming to you because I can’t fathom even you being able to salvage it :) Of course, I hope I’m wrong!

Keep up the good work! Sarah L and Tracey!”

Week 2: Sarah (& Tracey) - Before

Week 2: Sarah (& Tracey) - Before

I love that this was a team effort!  Nothing is more fantastic than getting together with friends to sift through donated goods, laughing about the ridiculousness in some of the pieces, and then sending me the remnants.  You girls go!

I needed to take this in a bunch, so to make it more fitted I tried the piece on, cinched, and pinned the areas that needed to be sewn.  I started at each sleeve pinning my way down the dress.

Pin time!

Pin time!

With my pins in place I started to sew…

Bring her in!

Bring her in!

Once I made my way down the dress and finished sewing, I began to trim the excess cotton material outside the newly sewn seam.

Trim the edges!

Trim the edges!

With both sides trimmed, I went to the hem next.  I decided to create a mullet dress!!  Business in the front, party in the back.  Chelsea Handler was just shot in an Elizabeth & James version…

…and Ashley Tisdale stepped out in Kymerah…

…so I figured that it was my turn!  I snipped a slit in the bottom center of the dress about six inches – I wanted to make a modest cut and not go too crazy high.  After the center trim, I cut both sides (like rounded triangles) to form a half circle.  This is the newly formed “business” part of the dress.

Front Trim!

"It's business. It's business time." (xo Bret & Jemaine)

I unbuttoned the buttons at the top of the piece, added a brown camisole, vintage belt, and threw on my ankle boots – I was ready to rock my new mullet dress!!

Week 2: Sarah (& Tracey) - After

Week 2: Sarah & Tracey - After

I couldn’t resist mulleting myself as well…love that the MacGruber iPhone app is still available.  As you can see, my phone pictures are a bit too small.

My chic-ly dressed friend Gable even matched my ensemble.

Chic-est. Dog. Ever.

I mean is this dog ready for the runway?  (…or Coachella with the rest of the Los Angelenos?)

Rockin' the neck scarf!

Rockin' the neck scarf!

Oh and earlier in the day I was doing a little flea marketing with a girlfriend – we came across this wonder.  Seriously?  This was at the end of the rack, front and center, in a booth that only sold jorts (jean shorts).

This is not a joke.

This is not a joke.

I just had to share…anybody else ever come across a denim thong?  This just screams SNL sketch…Kristen Wiig, let’s get on the denim thong, thong, thong, thong, thong song STAT!

Sarah & Tracey, thank you for sending this yellow piece my way!  I must say, this was one of the softest pieces I’ve worn in a while.  House dresses know how to be comfortable and I reaped that benefit for sure!

  • Sue

    Nice job. so much better.

As for the denim thong… ouch.

  • http://ericakjordan.com/ Erica

    LOVE that asymmetrical hem!
the denim thong totally made me think of nevernudes a la Arrested Development!

    • newdressaday

       Ha, yes!!  Best. Ever.

  • Btejkl

I love it especially how the color of the dress goes so well with your hair:) Ummmmm, I have no words for the denim thong.

  • Paula

Not a big fan of the asymmetrical hem…and not just on this dress on any dress.  But cute none the less.  As for the thong…who would wear such a thing and would it be worn by itself or under clothes?

  • http://twitter.com/AmyBPerrault Amy B. Perrault

Two words that should never go together — jean thong.

  • http://www.facebook.com/megplumps Meghan Plummer

I’ve never liked mullet dresses even a little bit, but yours is adorable!

And I can totally picture Tobias Funke/David Cross in the denim thong…and it isn’t a pretty picture. :)

    • newdressaday

Um, completely.  Maybe for the AD movie reboot??  Let’s get on it Meghan!

  • DinaB

Don’t laugh, but I have that exact one!!!
It is very comfy and I jut love it.

(House dress not jeans thong) :~)

thats a cute refashion!!  im loving those high low dresses!  it looks awesome!

  • Cathryn

Very cute! I like the way you did the asymmetrical hem without it being too extreme. It looks great on you. Also, love the little dog rocking a scarf—what a sweetie. Thanks for sharing the pic of the denim thong, just goes to show that you never know what you are going to find at a thrift store. This weekend I scored a Remington manual typewriter with case and keys at a thrift store near me! I’ve been looking for years!!!

  • http://www.thatuncomfotableitch.com/ Heather C

    The yellow ensemble is fabulous!

I’m going to show the denim thong to my 15 year-old daughter. She is a lover of wee shorts, but that number would be a scandal!

    • newdressaday

Ha, you will have to!  My friend posted the shot on Facebook and it’s gotten a lot of chatter.  We must have been at the jorts booth for 10 minutes giggling :)

  • Tollyfaye

This is a great redo–you could never even guess that it used to be a housedress. I wish housedresses would come back tho, they seem so comfy!

  • Julie Smith

    Super cute.  I love it!

  • Sarah_H.

I could not imagine what you were going to do with that dress, but you did grea8! Now I am trying to imagine what anyone would do with that jeans thong…..maybe wear it over leggings? The mind boggles.

  • Keenzi

I’ve been wondering what to do with my old jeans that are too worn to give away, thanks for the idea, Marisa! Kidding!

Cute redo, love that it was an idea I don’t remember seeing on here before–so au courant!

  • Sue Westrell

    Denim thongs…?
…I refuse to pass judgement on that. :|

The dress is cute, and not a refashion I’ve seen before. Simple updates really do change how things look – just taking in and adding a unique hem took that piece of hideousness into something that is totally great.

    • newdressaday

Yay, thanks Sue!  Yeah, feel free to pass judgement…

  • Deb

Cute cute CUTE!…the yellow is so “in” right now.

  • http://twitter.com/Jenny_Shain Jenny Shain

You are a Freakin NINJA I tell you, A NINJA!!!!!!!!!

    • newdressaday

Um, you just made my day.  Literally :)

  • fishgirl182

love the mullet dress! and um, that thong kind of scares me. i think someone should get it for the arrested development film.

  • Beth Anne

There is no situation that would make a denim thong okay… Love the dress reboot though! :)

  • http://coisadalulu.blogspot.com Luciana Oliveira

Olá, sou do Brasil e adoro o seu blog. Te segui desde as suas primeiras postagens. Me inspira bastante! Bjs

  • Laura_r_78

do people ever ask for the things they sent you to come back there way? This is definately one of those things I would like back in my closet. I have to find some better thrift stores but preferably not ones that resell thong jeans! Your awesome and great job again!

  • Carol

Marisa you are too awesome!  The yellow print with the belt and boots is so cute. And this is the first asymmetrical hemmed dress that I’ve seen that hasn’t looked silly because it was taken to extremes. Speaking of extremes, I would not be surprised  to see that denim thong over top of fishnets or holely leggings   on some hoochie mamas in a Hollywood club.

    • newdressaday

Ha, I do not disagree Carol :)   If/when I come across someone wearing that denim thong for real in Hollyweird, I will take pics and post, blurring out the unmentionables.  You see a bit of it all out here in LA!

  • Crystal

This turned out absolutely ADORABLE!! LOVE IT!!!

  • Salome_delilah

I love your little dress it’s pretty, generally those short front dresses look awful. By the way, in Australia thongs are called G-strings. So you could call that a Jean-string.

    • newdressaday

Trademark that one Salome Delilah!!  Love it :)

  • Lauraly

Your re-do is so cute! And that jeans thong is so wrong…lol!

  • Elise

I think this might be my all-time favourite make-over.  I would never have dreamed up what you did with this one and it’s adorable!  Good work.  :)

  • Pratima

LOL at the thong. That just about made my day! And adorable dress!

  • Lovestosew

That thong is too funny.  I love the new dress, very cute.  I have to say though, I don’t like the one Ms. Handler is wearing.  It looks like the seamstress ran out of fabric.  Your’s looks better than the designer piece.

  • KathyA

I couldn’t imagine that you could do anything with that horrible “schmatta”……that’s NYease for rag, but you did it again. You never fail to surprise me. Some gals and I get together and read your blog, always trying to come up with ideas for the garments you feature. We are never able to top you or even come close. You rock!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=5013724 Pamela Smith

i think this is one of my all time favorites! it looks so comfy, and of course adorable on you!

  • Williams_blds

Ok.  I saw this dress and immediately thought, “How hideous!”.  Then you said mullet dress and I thought, “OMG.  Seriously?!  This will NOT be good.”  And then I made it to the pic of the “new” dress and thought, “I would wear that!”.  Awesome job!!  Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Williams_blds

  • Liza Lu

I don’t know why everybody was so skeptical.  You never fail to come up with something totally adorable and way different from the original incarnation of the dress.  I admit, I was a little nervous when I saw the word “mullet” but you made it the prettiest mullet in history!

p.s.  Are you secretly wearing that jean thong underneath?  Come on, you can tell us…

  • Cre8soap

    What a great transformation!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/jodywallace Jody Wallace

Another success–of course! I wonder if you’d ever be brave enough to do a week of “failures” to give hope to those of us who try to do what you do and fail most of the time? *heh*

  • http://chasingfabrics.blogspot.com/ Wiola

Wow, it turned out so great! It looks beautiful on you. Yellow suits you.
Yikes, the denim thong freaks me out. I mean, it doesn’t even look comfortable to begin with…

  • jas

=( i was hoping the site remake would mean i could flick from one post to the next without having to the home page and clicking on the next one…

but the dress is amazing as always =)

  • Simply Devine

I’m laughing out loud about the demin ‘thong’ shorts!  I bet  they were ‘designed’ to be worn at a place that had a ‘no bathing suits allowed’ sign in the window?!

Great make-over on the yellow house dress!  I have to admit, as a sewer of more than 35 years, that sometimes I cringe at your sewing techniques, but when you turn the garment right side out, I think, “Damn, that girl makes everything look so cute!”

Keep on encouraging more women to try sewing!  I welcome you all to the ‘club.’

  • Sewfun53-lovesNDAD

That house dress sure turned out cute!! And the denim thong is WAY too much!!!! You are so very clever!!!!! I agree with Simply Devine – sometimes I think “she did WHAT” but the end results are amazing…..Thanks for the inspiration and fun!!

  • Alejandra

Nice work with both the dress and finding the j-thong ;) Thanks for sharing.
