Week 32: Royals Week Leftovers!

I went back to one of my ‘Royals Week’ pieces for today’s creation!!

Royals Week Leftovers - Before

Royals Week Leftovers - Before

When I tweaked this fab dress back in April, I was left with that beauty queen sash of sorts…

Sash Leftovers!

Sash Leftovers!

I was originally thinking I’d perhaps do a bikini top or something fun and beachy, but then went a different direction when I saw JW’s Barcelona-ian head piece she brought back from a recent trip to Spain.

The Spanish inspiration!

The Spanish inspiration!

I loved and had to make my own version!!

First, I measured the piece around my head and cut the sash in two to fit around the noggin!

Trim in half!

Trim in half!

Once the piece was fitted to my head, I began to gather and stitch each end before stitching the two sides together.  I did this all by hand as there was tons of material that needed to be handled :)

Stitchin

Once the piece was all stitched and done, I put the new headbandy-turban on my head and vegged out on my melon couch that will soon be a new shade!

Loungin'

I totally feel like Edie Beale in this – I wasn’t sure if I was going to look ridiculous or not…

Pose, much?

Pose, much?

…but felt that if Mary Kate Olsen can rock it like it’s her job, I can try my hand at it.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed wearing this on my head!  I’m usually more of a hat gal, but I can get on this turban action while it’s still trendy!!

My new favorite spot of my apartment!

love it! i make turbans too but i like the embellishment on yours, so greta garbo :)

  • Jennifer Cepero

    very chic!

  • DinaB

Wow! You are rockin that to the max! Love the B&W pick, totally Garbo girl. It would be a perfect style for people like my daughter who unfortunately have very thin hair and have some thin spots starting to show. She doesn’t like hats and maybe this would work for her. Thanks for the fashion forward style idea.

    • Anonymous

Yes! I’m the queen of thin hair too!! She’ll be rocking the Garbo look in no time!

  • Savannah

Oh! You have to do a bikini next time! When you said that I was like, “Yay!” Please keep that in mind next time you get a similar material. We haven’t seen beach wear from you yet!

    • KimboTron5000

That must have been a tough call…because the turban came out very cute, but I can see where this would have made a great bikini too…

    • Anonymous

Done…there is still material left and I will totally create that!! Fun beach ensemble to come!!

  • Bethany

That is the cutest thing ever! Do you have pics of the back of it? I’d love to see, because I want to make one!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE  LOVE.

  • Jjayme26

Love it! You are adorable in it!

  • http://www.wom-mom.com WOM-MOM Ethne

Surprisingly, I don’t mind this either.  You usually look good in about everything.  I, on the other hand, look goofy if my hair doesn’t frame my face with a little hairstyle volume.

Fab, fab, fab! Love it that you can take that awful sash thing and make it new! Sometimes I get wrecked with Catholic guilt looking at all the fun things you resurrect as I recall the mounds of clothing I’ve tossed over the years…. Kudos for you, and super green of you, too!

    • Anonymous

Ha, the guilt, the guilt!! Next time…

  • Unodeuxtre

    love it girlfriend!

I cringed when you said “turban”, but this actually came out super cute!

  • Devan

Hey Marisa! I just wanted to say you’re a huge inspiration to me. I love, love, love, LURV to treasure hunt in thrift stores, garage sales, my boyfriend’s closet… aaanywhere with unwanted materials, and give those old pieces a fabulous new life! I’m addicted to your blog! Good luck with your book, I’m sure with your creativity it will be a great success! I’ll be looking for it in the craft section of B&N…  :)

  • daphne

“I think this is the best costume for today”.  Little Edie for sure! (but in a cute way, not a ‘take off the skirt, wear it as a cape’ way)

  • Kitteny2u

Certainly not everyone could pull off this look, but you definitely do!!! Good luck and have fun with the shoot!

  • mary

Ooh the turban is great, but I am also loving the green (velvet?) chair! Super cute :)

Thank you to my friend John who gave it to me before he moved to NY. It’s the centerpiece of my new living room!  More to come Mary…

First thing I thought was Edie Beale too!!!  I think it looks great – especially with the wavy hair!  Good piece from Royal’s Week too with the love of hats and head pieces those Royals have.

    • Anonymous

I love Grey Gardens…me and Edie Beale have our Long Island connection too. Would live in muumuus and robes all day too but wouldn’t fare well with the rats/empty cans/other garbage in their mansh on the beach :)

      • http://SilverLiningsToo.etsy.com Copper1cent

I google earthed their house one day – felt like a stalker – but what a location!!!!!!

  • Debjdarby

Really, REALLY cute! Wish I could rock that.

  • rojopaul

Okay, I was excited when you said bikini top and then not so thrilled when you decided to do the head piece.  But you made a believer out of me!  It turned out great and looks adorable to boot!  I am always amazed at what you creative people see when something is so hideous.  I just see “yuk!”  But you always make it work and I’m continually amazed.  Good job, yet again!

  • Evalyn

For the first time in a long time, I can say WOW!  Out of the box, out of the park, out of site.  Totally unexpected and delightfully delicious.

I think it might look a bit better if it was a little thinner so you could see more of your hair… but that’s a really smart idea and I love wearing head bands.
