Week 47: Piece 2 from Dye Tutorial

Mar 9, 2011 | 44 Comments

l figured that while I was at it doing a dye tutorial yesterday, I’d kill two birds with one stone!

Week 47: Penny - Before

Week 47: Penny - Before

It was reminiscent of the barong I remade and dyed on Day 85.

Day 85's Barong

Day 85's Barong

The material I came to learn was a banana fabric coming from banana fibers.  Had a similar consistency to organza.  So this piece I felt more inclined to change the shade of because there were beautiful floral details on the sleeves and on the back of the piece that couldn’t really be seen…

The detail!

The detail!

…so I opted to toss it in with the fuchsia bath!!  Why not, right?

Another dye job :)

Another dye job :)

I had a feeling it would turn out a bit differently, shade wise, because of the fabric…want to check it out?

It came out a lovely shade of pink!!  It was a rather perfect, Easter-y type top!

Pink!!

Pink!!

And speaking of Easter, I’m already planning what to give up during Lent and it includes the below…

Week 47: Penny - After

Week 47: Penny - After

I don’t do fast food that often, but when I give that up, soda (single tear for Dr. Pepper), and candy (will just eat popcorn at the movies now…no Peanut M&M’s tossed in) it packs a bigger punch.  I had to go out with a bang, so In-N-Out was on the dinner agenda.

For a quick second, look at the detail on the back of the piece now – the color really pops on the embroidery.  I love it!

The detail!!

The detail!!

What a difference from the simple white – you can actually see what was crafted on it now!  OK, back to the food…

Because I’m obsessed with In-N-Out’s ‘secret menu‘ I first ordered some Animal Style fries…

Animal Style!!

Animal Style!!

and then I went there…

I mean...

I mean...

Delicious, check. Tummy ache, check, but totally worth it :)

Oh my god that food looks SO GOOD. I need to find myself that restaurant. As for the new piece of clothing, I think it is very beautiful and cute, but I don’t think I would wear it… not my style. BUT it looks great on you!

    Woo HOO!!! First comment!!

  • Dawn

That is really pretty and the dye really does help bring out the detail of the flowers.

  • Tami

The dye job looks wonderful! I am also surprised you left the sleeves…they are pretty poufy. Still, it’s a fabulous outcome!

It would be a cute little vest, wouldn’t it?

  • Wom-Mom Ethne

Looks like you did this one in the washer too. When you do it on a pot in the stove, does it make the color brighter?

Love the way it turned out but I am surprized you left the sleeves on this one. LOL

I love the way the flowers pop. I missed all your Oscar posts. Hope you had a great time.
Is that fabric – made of bananas, hard to find?

I think the color turned out really nice! Im not so sure I would’ve kept on the sleeves…. but then again thats just me :)

The color looks nice, and it does bring out the detail of the beautiful embroidery. I agree with other commenters about the sleeves. Not for me, but to each her own. If you like ‘em, rock ‘em. Btw, you’re killing me with all this talk and pictures of In-N-Out. Now I have a wicked craving, and no way to satisfy it. :P It’s times like this that make me wish I was on the West coast again.

  • Twinkle

Marisa! I can’t believe I just spent a half hour reading the “secret menu” and salivating over the deliciousness! Makes me wanna go out tonight and ‘burgulate!’ I don’t live near an IN-N-OUT but now I definitely want a bacon cheeseburger with mushrooms and grilled onions. Mmmmm. Good luck on your fast for Lent…….Anywho, your shirt is beautiful.

hahah i did the same thing!

    • Margo

Oh my god… same here. I can’t believe there isn’t any In-N-Out restaurants where I live!!! ugh!! WHY?!?!?!

  • til

    holy big sleeves!
    love the dye job though.

  • Vanessa

Want In-N-Out NOW!!!!!!! Tooo bad I live in upstate New York and it doesn’t exist here. :(

  • Vintagerockchick

Love the dye job – but the food, I am afraid to say, looks absolutely hideous and nothing could induce me to eat it. Good job we’re all different. x

Salamat Marissa for showing the beauty of the Filipino culture..

Greetings from a Filipina in Norway!

    • meimei

Seconding that – maraming salamat, M!

A few comments from a fellow Filipina:

This blouse is what we’d call a Kimona (http://www.barongsrus.com/barong/kimona-c-24_56.html) which is basically a feminine version of the barong; we usually wear these on formal occasions, usually with a cami underneath. (Though I have also worn mine over a slip dress, as well – and even tried to wear one with pants, too, as you did.)

I would’ve told you that you were wearing this backwards, since the embroidered sides are often worn in the front… except that, personally speaking, this would’ve gone into Mother of The Bride territory if you’d gone with the leaves in front. (YMMV, fellow Filipinas.) So I don’t blame you for reversing this one.

As for the commenters who think that the poofy sleeves should go: I will speak on your behalf by saying that you made a good call on keeping them. We like our sleeves poofy when it comes to our formal wear; it gives us a reason to work on our posture. ;)

      Great job!

Thank you for sharing that! I love to learn new things about other cultures.

Love the top! I’m also impressed that you did the Animal Style fries and burger. I just can’t do it. Have you ever done the quad burger? Perhaps after your Lenten fast…

  • Jo

Exactly how do you stay so skinny?!!

    • Dilly Pickly

That was my thought! “Where does it all go??” Clearly, she has some kind of metabolism that turns calories into creativity!

  • Wrayoflight

That looks like a terrific tummy ache. Wow, lent. I haven’t given up anything for lent in a long time. Maybe I should do that this year. The top came out so beautiful. You have gotten me obsessed with dying stuff. I mostly have t-shirts but I will be checking out Goodwill soon for some blouses.

  • Lisa

I have a new high efficiency top loading washing machine that uses very little water (not sure how well I like it yet) and the water level is based solely on the weight of the load….therefore, I have no way to choose the water level. Do I dare try to dye in it? Any thoughts you have are much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Skennedy

Whew! The food gives me a tummy ache by default. Hope you are just going through a stage, lovely girl, cuz your diet will eventually bite you back in so very many ways! Oh, yes…xxx
However—The blouse is beautiful, just gorgeous!!!!!!!

  • Btejkl

The blouse turned out beautifully but, I’m not sure about the sleeves (although I understand the significance of the Filipina formal wear). The food looks iffy at best – maybe because we don’t have In-N-Out here…..

Great idea! I live in Manila and the Barong is our national costume. My mom have lots of those dresses and tops that she no longer wear, I might rework it one day and surprise her.
    Thanks!

You are KILLIN’ me here in New Mexico! Gotta head west to AZ if I want my In n Out fix. Beautiful result on the piece. I hope your Lenten season and fast is really meaningful for you.

Can I double like? One four the soo cute shirt and one for In n Out Burger! We don’t have them here in TN. :(

  • dosfashionistas

    Love the top!

I am trying something new for Lent. since I have limited success giving things up, my discipline is that I will eat two large servings of green vegetables a day, and 1 piece of fresh fruit. I figure that will cut out on room for the less healthy foods. Best wishes for your Lenten program.

  • MandeeSparkle

That food looks so stinking amazing.
I LOVE WHAT DYE DOES TO LACE!

I LOVE In-N-Out…I’m from New Zealand, so don’t get the chance to have it that often. But whenever I’m across your side of the pond in L.A., it’s one of my fav haunts ;-) My kingdom for their animal style fries & chocolate shake right now…

  • Nancy

Very cool dye job! My boyfriend is Fillipino and I’ve seen these tops and dresses in his mother’s closet. Her’s are starched or something because they are very stiff. I’m not sure if it is the banana material or if it is actually starched. She would never let me near them with dye, though. Great job featuring something that is not in the American culture!

Having been a chubs most of my adult life, I have carefully avoided foods that are just over the top – like banana splits and fries with a ridiculous amount of cheese, bacon, and is that thousand island dressing? on top. Depriving myself of such items hasn’t helped the waistline any. I also have trouble with giving up stuff during Lent, so I go the route of adding more good to my life; daily devotions or weekday mass. Feeling deprived and grumpy can’t be good for my spiritual journey, can it?

  • confessionsofadesperatemom

    I can’t live without Dr. Pepper…

      I mean…addicted!

That’s barong tagalog and kimona. It’s Philippine’s Ntional Costume. Glad you use it as one of your project…

aww no fair the closest In and out is 800 miles away!

  • Anthea

    OMG it’s a Filipino Kimona!

You’ve done a barang, a kimona and a “terno” with butterfly sleeves. The presence of Filipino formal wear in thrift stores must be due to the fact that there are tons of Pinoys living and working in the West Coast (there are Filipinos almost anywhere). It’s nice you find potential to turn our formal wear into something current and cute!

I have lots of relatives in the West Coast especially in the Bay Area and my first meal in the US last November when I visited was an In-N-Out Burger!!!

I watched lady Gaga’s Born This Way Monster Ball in Manila a few months ago and she rocked Butterfly sleeves (twice)! =)
