It’s Thursday of Shoulder Pad Week!!

The Golden Gals knew how to rock the shoulder pads!

Day 4: Shoulder Pads from Day 134!!

What shiny pads you are!

What shiny pads you are!

I implemented some of your thoughts for today’s!!

After an iPhone case as yesterday’s project, I thought to myself, ‘self, now wouldn’t it be nice to have something a little smaller to tote around a lip gloss, maybe an ID or some money.’  I answered yes and decided today’s would be a more of a change purse/small zippy unit to keep smaller things in.  I went to Day 134.’s pads right away.

Pretty pads!

Pretty pads!

I loved that they had the same metallic fabric on them as the piece they were in and I also loved that they fit perfectly with the scattered zippers I had on hand.

Zippers!!

Zippers!!

I took the flat end of each pad and began to pin the edges to the zipper.

Pinned zipper!

Pinned zipper!

After the edges were pinned, I went to the sewing machine and stitched them down.

Zipper stitch!

Zipper stitch!

Now that the zipper was attached to each pad…

Halfway there!

Halfway there!

…I folded the pad creation into a little fabric taco and pinned and stitched the circular edges together, with the zipper, right side down.

Edge stitching time!

Once it was all stitched, I opened the zipper and turned the pouch inside out.

Inside out!!!

Inside out!!!

I was so excited to grab my goods…

My goods!

My goods!

…and put them into my little zippy pouch!

It fits!!

It fits!!

I loved my little pouch…

Lil' pouch!!

Lil' pouch!!

…but I think my friends loved it more!!

TT, CB & RM seriously love my pouch :)

Day 4 success!!  Until tomorrow…

Great idea!!! Little pouches are great to have around.

    • Nancy J. Martin

I don’t know what is on tap for Day 5, but have you thought of a bikini bathing suit top from shoulder pads? Perfect for the not so endowed!

  • Jennifer

very cute! LOVE that photo of your friends…haha.

  • not-so-evil-stepmother

My favorite thing this week, but that picture of your friends with it is the best!

Haha! Your friends sure are goofy! And that is one little cute pouch. :) You could also make something like I did – a padded case with little compartments for makeup and toothbrush, etc. that I use for out-of-town audit engagements. :) -Issa of Ukay, Fine Whatever!

I think it really is a reticule more than a pouch- sounds fancier, and less marsupial.

    • Diana

      ROFLOL!

  • thelma

so now you can make little pouches for all of your friends for their b-days and tuck a little gift inside!….perfect for holding a gift card to your fav coffee place or a great lipgloss, etc!

  • Melba

Adorbs! Love you and love shoulder pad week. Where else on earth can you follow the progress of a big jar o’ shoulder pads and how they became useful? This was my favorite so far, although I did love the iPhone holder. The headpiece had to grow on me (so to speak), but it sure tickled my funnybone. Great work.

Love it! I’m sensing a new line of accessories!!!

  • Savannah

You could put a looped ribbon at one end of the pouch and slip it on your wrist for clubbing!!! All of your accessories in a small reticule that isn’t heavy or overburdening! Love it. I may make one of these for myself. Although, I don’t remember the last time I went to a club. :)

Who knew shoulder pads would be so versatile? I’m sure the Golden Girls would approve.

  • Leila vibrola

Awesome…and Orbit gum is the best!

  • kinder teacher

I just get a little giggle when I hear how everyone hates shoulder pads…back in the day…(90′s)…I had friends that jokingly said they wanted “shoulder pad implants”…we double backed them…we bought camis with them…friends would make sure that they weren’t twisted or folded…they were the rage…man!!!!!!

  • Women on a Mission

Glad you showed a zipper installation – zippers are not scary – they’re super easy! ~L & E

    • Cathryn

Yes, thanks for showing how to do a zipper on a pouch! I make pouches to hold my memoir kits and until now they have all been in the style of an envelope with a button closure. (thefinaldrafthome.com) My least favorite part of the whole thing is trying to get the button in the right place for the elastic band. Now that I see how to do it, I think I’m going to try changing the design to use a zipper. Way cool! Thanks!

I recently saw a book that suggested using oven mitts as a mini purse. Same idea, less expense. I’m impressed! :)

Once again, I’m amazed. My daughter is learning how to sew and she follows you and believe me, I’ve got lots of old clothes for her (16 years old) to work on. I quilt but never got around to sewing. Armholes always seem to throw me. My daughter is starting her Gold Award Project this month starting a sewing group for Little Dresses for Africa so you really inspire her. Thanks.

Okay, I’m not sure what I did but I’ll repost since I wanted you to know how amazing I think you are and what an imagination you have. My daughter (16) is learning to sew and loves it. I quilt but never could get into sewing – armholes always through me. E (16yr) is starting work on her Gold Award for GS (like Eagle Scout). She’s starting a sewing group for “Little Dresses for Africa”. She follows your blog too. Keep up the good work, we really enjoy watching you.

This one turned out really cute. Just imagine…a matching coin purse to go with each revamped outfit…cool idea. I’m still waiting on the one for my glasses that I keep dropping (oh yeah and I also drop my iphone all the time). Maybe I should check the attic for some outfits from the 80s…hmmmm ;-D

  • Kambi

    This is so cute!

  • Rhonda

Have you been watching American Idol? J-Lo has been wearing these short skirts that flare out. I think it would be cool to sew a BUNCH of the shoulder pads together like random flower petals, and you could pull off wearing it! Can you see the vision?

    • Wantchevy1961

That is a very cool idea!!

What a great idea!!! Well done!

  • Wantchevy1961

Thats very cute! But you could also add a thin, long strap to it. Then you can wear it with the matching outfit that it came from. Just a thought. Custom purses with custom outfits.

  • Lynntofu

    Cool!

  • Ginger4me

Too cute…I thought you would put the zipper on the round part….much better to put it on thr straight part.

  • Jennifer

Such a creative use of shoulder pads!

This is a great idea! After using it, do you think it would be better if you added a loop or handle of some type?
