Day 34. 331 days and $327 left to go.

I’m going to be completely honest – today’s outfit was one that came together rather last minute… Being it was New Year’s Eve and I was going to be on the party hopping circuit, I had just planned to just do some boots and jeans with a little made-over jacket. My thoughts were to keep it low-key and comfy until I got a text from my party hopping cohort LP saying, “I’m wearing a black dress.” Quick action needed to be taken (text came in about 20 minutes before I had to be ready) so I grabbed this puppy, turned the sewing machine on and got crackin’.

Day 34 - Before

Day 34 - Before

This dress that I just picked up a weekend ago immediately came to mind – the ruffled front was tuxedo-esque so I decided it would be the NYE outfit to ring in 2010 with. Working as quickly as possible, there were 3 things involved in this transformation. I brought the sleeves in a bit, tightened up the top (didn’t really want to be exposing myself all night in the deep V-ness of the dress) and cut it short in a 10 minute time span. Because I didn’t have a whole lotta time to work with, I left the edges raw and without hems and used a vintage brooch at the waist to make it just a bit tighter as I didn’t get it completely right the first time.

I feel like I pulled this one out of the hat, but was so happy with the outcome. Getting a little more snazzed up than I had originally planned was the best decision I could have made because dresses always make me feel good. Counting down to midnight while overlooking the city, the blue moon, and bits of fireworks in the distance was the perfect way to close one decade and bring in another.

Little side note…I distinctly remember hearing the Black Eyed Peas getting spun by the DJ as well – honestly I thought (wished or hoped rather) that they may get locked in the 2009 vault, but unfortunately I was wrong. Fergie and her boom, boom pow have made it to 2010.

Wishing you the happiest and healthiest this brand new year!!

Day 33. 332 days and $328 left to go.

I had an extremely important dinner on my agenda for this evening that clearly was going to require an excellent ensemble. Nothing less for a night out with the BFF, right?

Day 33 - Before

Day 33 - Before

This dress was an all in all mess when I came across it in a pile of vintage toss aways. The color was eh, the length was eh, the collar was eh, but the best part was the shimmery thread that made vertical lines throughout the piece. Shockingly, that was the best (and only) part of the dress that I liked. Clearly it was time to get crackin!

I decided to cut it shorter and make it more of a tunic. That solved the length issue, but there was still work to be done. I couldn’t really change the color, however I could change the way it fit and that I did! Because I was keeping the color intact, I grabbed my fave vintage 60s chestnut belt along with my brown Oxford’s to make the brownish color scheme work. Chcck it out…

Day 33 - After

Day 33 - After

After some delish food – burrata, a full-bodied Cab, some ridiculous mushroom gnocchi and some bread pudding, on top of a convo that was one for the history books, me and my LB grabbed s’more cocktails with some friends down the street. Said friend included this pal…

…who wasn’t much of a talker. He left that to me and LB – we talked so much at our belated bday dinner that we were the last people standing, or sitting rather, in the restaurant. I received the BGE (best gift ever) – a DVD full of Swans Crossing episodes, which for most wouldn’t ring any sort of bell, but to us (and the other 14 people across the country who were obsessed) was literally like pennies falling from heaven. It’s the simple things that make this girl smile. Thanks LB – I’m gonna be smiling for a long time!!! xoxo

Day 32. 333 days and $329 left to go.

Now when I found this puppy, it looked like it could have been an figure skating ensemble in a past life. Clearly way longer than any Olympic regulated costume I’ve ever seen and it was without a speck of flare – I mean, what’s a costume without feathers, sequins, brightly colored lighting bolts and flames? I envisioned Dorothy Hamill, a pair of skates, and a bowl hair cut and wanted to get as far away from that picture as possible.

Day 32 - Before

Day 32 - Before

What sold me on this piece wasn’t the unflattering center seam that ran all the way down the front of the dress from the top to the bottom, it was the amazing buttons and ruching on the back of the neck. That in itself was worth the $1 – I knew that I could always turn that into some fun accessory if the rest of the piece didn’t work, but nah…I had faith in myself that something dope would prevail.

Day 32 - Neck & Button Detail

I pondered a bit over which direction to take this, and in the end I decided to chop it all off! Because the center seam was so unflattering, any sort of dress (mini or knee-length) would have still looked just as heinous. I scratched the dress idea and went solely with the turtleneck. I loved the final product and added one of my fave ebay vintage gold tassel necklaces to accompany. I guess you could say that was my couples partner this evening.

Day 32 - After

Day 32 - After

I couldn’t wait to take the newly completely piece out for a double axel or triple lutz (ie. Blue Moon’s during the happiest of hours with SZ). The fans in the stands (ie. the men sitting at the bar watching Wisconsin beat the Hurricanes) gave me 10s (ie. “I like the way that looks”) so I left very happy with my gold medal status (ie. smiles and nods). The Olympics are right around the corner and clearly I’m getting excited.

Day 31. 334 days and $330 left to go.

Today’s pick was completely 60s inspired. After watching Nine and falling in love with Italy again, the only way to recreate my happy feeling was a retro top and some moscato.

Day 31 - Before

Day 31 - Before

Here was the delightful little mod-ish top I came across in one of my garage sale-hopping days. The pink and chartreuse flowery/paisley pattern needed to happen, so yes, I purchased it. One slight issue…there was a big hole on the left sleeve. Check it out…

Day 31 - Before (Holy Extreme Close-Up)

Day 31 - Before (Holy Extreme Close-Up)

To me this hole was completely beatable with four easy steps. One, cut a hole in the box. No, wait, wrong step. Here we go…One, turn the top inside out. Two, pin the frayed edges together. Three, stitch a quick makeshift seam to mend the hole. Four, turn inside out. Perfezione, ready-to-wear. The mended sleeve looked like a crease in the fabric post-completion, so I was quite eccitato! (Scuse for the broken Italian…)

Day 31 - After

At the end of the day, this was less Kate Hudson/Nine and more Goldie Hawn/Desert Flower but whatever…I was still rockin’ the 60s vibe, workin’ the poof, donnin’ the shades, feelin’ the love, all while hummin’ “Cinema Italiano.” Prego, prego.

Day 30. 335 days and $331 left to go.

Dec 27, 2009 | 4 Comments

Today I wanted to wear a color that was warm and smiley, so I chose this salmon colored puppy. It was slightly overcast and a little chillier out there, so I thought that this sweater would work perfectly to drink my am coffee, watch some bball and footy games as well as try to feel like I was in actual COLD temps instead of just “chilly” ones.

Day 30 - Before

Day 30 - Before

Now with just a simple look, this sweater is slightly blech – color is fun but the rest of it is totally passable. I did like the ruffled cuffs and collar, however it still wasn’t fun or glam or exciting to me…until I thought of a simple addition. OK, now you may recall my Day 3 ensemble (quick refresher here) as I had a bevy of these fab floral appliques that I used to make a headband. I only used two of them and still had a ton leftover. That ringing bell from the Saved By the Bell theme song went off in my head (as it sometime does…total guilty pleasure) and I thought snag the buckaroo sweater and add those shiny flowers to the front.

Day 30 - After

Day 30 - After

Adding that small detail made all the difference Рtwo more floral appliques down, 18 to go. Like I said last time, this won’t be the last time these floral puppies make an appearance.
